I joined the site Amy had posted a while back. www.healthyoutcomes.com Today I got my free A1c kit. I have never done one before and was wondering if any of you have done the home kits? What is the best time to do it? Fasting, after a meal? I was just not sure. The directions do mention a time to do it.
Thanks for your help

My results are in and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I feared the worst, and expected an 8-10.
Today, while I waited for it to show up I was surprised at how nervous I was. I was so dreading it.....I have a 7.6! wow!

I know that is still high, but I was so happy it was not thru the roof. I susppose my lab work in a couple of weeks will include one. We will see how accurate this one was.

Wow Gabby, that's really good for doing it all on your own. I was expecting you to be an 8-9 and I thought once on medicine you would come down lower. But of course you are amazing. Good job! I know in 3 months you are probably going to be right on target…Debe

I hope so. I just had to call my mom and tell her, I was so excited. I am still bouncing. I hope to keep it going and get that 5, yes indeed a 5 sounds good. I will settle for a 6, but not for too long.

Gabby that is great. You should be proud of your self because you got there on your own. Now with meds you can get lower even faster. Are you going to ask about all your supplements? You must watch about going to low with your sugars, if you are going to continue with them.

I talked to my pharmisist today and he told me that the only thing that he saw that could cause an issue was my Red Yeast Rice, but when he checked it, all was good. I'm glad. I have pared down the ones I take and found a good balance for me...and my pocket book. LOL

Keep you the good work !

Gabby, I got mine today too… You DO NOT have to be fasting to do an A1C. The doctor always has you fasting because they are probably doing cholesterol at the same time. I did mine at 12:30pm today and sent it in already today LOL Curiosity got me!!

GabbyPA 2008-12-09 09:47:17 -0600 Report

I did mine this morning and we will see. I didn't get one of the spots totally filled, I hope that will still work. Sheesh...I also picked the wrong side of my finger to prick, I was a contortionist getting my sample on. LOL!

Now that we all have our kits, we will get to see what happens next.

For an a1c it doesn't matter when you take it. Funny you should bring this up, I did exactly the same thing and got the same kit today. Those lancing devices are killers though!

Really? They do look a bit frightening. YIKES! I guess because they go deep to get a bigger sample of blood. I'm sure they will wake me up! LOL

They are the same kind my PCP uses, I think they come 1000 for $1 or something. It's probably why people fear testing.

When I go to the doctor it is always fasting so I would say fasting. Let us know how it works. Never used one myself.

That is what I figured. I was so excited when I got it, I wanted to do it right away, but I am going to wait until the morning.

You do know it is an average of what has gone on for the past 3 months. For all the days. Not just what you have tested at. So if one day you were 300 at 2pm but when you checked it was 113. It does not know that. It is an average of all blood sugars during the past 3 months. So if it is high do not freak if you know you are doing better. It takes a couple of A1c results to get the better reading. At least that is what my doctor said. OK???

GabbyPA 2008-12-08 17:33:19 -0600 Report

Yep, I know. This will be my first one since I have been diagnosed. I am expecting it to be high, as I am still coming down and without meds. Looking at the average chart that is in the directions, I am guessing I will be between an 8-10. I am hoping for better, but not expecting. At least this will give me a starting point. I could only imagine what it would have been when I was first diagnosed and having numbers in the high 200's. Man! I will let you guys know. I should have the reslults in 5-7 days they said. So we will see.
