I have type 1 diabetes and I love to eat. Is there any foods that have little or no carbs in them?

Emerald Brand Cocoa Roasted and Cinnamon Roasted Almonds are a good snack…sweetened with Splenda, they are both sweet and crunchy. About 24 almonds have 6 grams of carb. I like to buy them when the local supermarket has a BOGO ( Buy one, get one free) sale.

You might try some of the pre-mixed protein drinks that are out there. Some of them have zero carbs and plenty of protein. If they don't have any at your local supermarket, try visiting a local GNC or natural food store. There are quite a variety of flavors these days (it used to be that the only flavors were chocolate, vanilla and strawberry). You should be able to find one that suits your taste.

I eat jerky, nuts, cut up veggies, for snacks. I eat high protein meals, for example yesterday for dinner I had stew with lean pork stew meat, lots of carrots and veggies. Carrots have a little carbs, but do not raise my BG. When I want something salty I like veggie straws, I find them at Walmart you can have 36 straws for 11 g carbs!

I snack on nuts (almonds, cashews, etc.), hard-boiled eggs, tuna, plain yogurt, and cheese if I'm trying to keep things low carb!

Lettuce is low carb but not totally carb free. One 6 inch diameter head (would you eat a whole head???) of Iceburg lettuce has 16 grams of carb. I follow a low carb diet and do eat lots of salads. As a fast food alternative, Subway will make most of their subs into a salad for you, eliminating the bread carbs.

I love to eat dill pickles for snacks. Almost no carbs and low calorie. I also like to eat a lot of raw veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, etc.

I love the pickle idea and they seem to keep me full faster and longer and I love to eat carrots but what gets me is that I also love to put ranch dressing on them

Regular ranch dressing has fewer carbs than the low fat or no fat versions…something to be aware of.

The one dowenside to pickles in general, is that they are salty. Too many and you'll raise your sodium level into a High Blood presure range. The raw veggies are great!

Howdy Beth
There are foods which have no carbs to speak of. Think about meats. And for foods which have low carbs, look at green leafy vegetables.

James, meats is a good suggestion to keep your carbs low. However, a bad choice to snack on. Sort of impractical for a snack I should say and must watch the cholestrol content as well. If it's not one thing it's another…LOL

Howdy VL great to hear from you again!

Unless one comes from a family which produces its own cholesterol (my 1st wife was one of those) dietary cholesterol is rarely a problem. As I understand it dietary cholesterol mostly travels out the GI tract unabsorbed. Where most people get their cholesterol is from eating too many carbs, which are turned to various kinds of fat (lipids) like cholesterol and triglycerides. I really don't concern myself with dietary cholesterol and my chol tests are traditionally nearly perfect. I did have a problem with trigs, but now I have my carbs under control, my trigs are now in a good range as well.

I learn something everyday. thanks for the input…however, I am one of those people who has to watch my cholesterol and triglycerides. I snack on cheese, nuts, boiled egg ( only 3 times a week at most) and yogurt, peanutbutter on a cracker, things like that. I eat one snack in the morning one in afternoon and of course one before bed. My carbs are kept so low my A1C was only 5.5 last month. But, my cholesterol was up. I swear you can't win for loosing. Good to talk to you again, I've missed you all so much. HOPEFULLY, my sick days are over and I'm back to stay. By the way, I had broke up with that gut I was seeing and then the following month he died. I feel horrible…Hugs to you, Peggy
