I agree with manapua. Please - go to your physician and be properly tested. It is wise for people with diabetes to restrict fruit because of the carbs. When you visit your physician s/he can make arrangements for you to have appointments with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator who will help you with diet. Diabetes is not a go-it-alone condition.

Chuckle. :D There are many things that people with diabetes have to leave behind. On the other hand we pick up a much healthier diet. We also eliminate all white foods: grain and grain products (this also includes whole grains because they are just as detrimental) , pasta, rice, cake, cookies, etc. You can do it just as the rest of us are doing. Best wishes. Lentyl

Hi Artqueen … You say you took a test on a website that told you were type 1 interesting … If I were you though I'd go see a doctor and get tested for diabetes …

Hello Manapua.. I haven't been online much in the past 3 months due to a few reasons. However, When I am, I do say hello to everyone, and post "how I am feeling", send out hugs, florwers etc.. Sometimes I get responses back sometimes I don't. Also, if you are gone for bit of time, and say you posted me 2 weeks ago, that is long gone by and I would never see it. That is why a private message sent to the "in box" is a good way to send messages to people unless it is in a response to a discussion like this one. then it is linked to you. I have had ppl ask me, did you see my post and I have to say no sorry it must have slipped by me… or yes, it was in my in box.. you can also use my email addy, that is posted as well. Unfortunately I do not use facebook. I hope all is well with you and your health. I am doing great. Now that the holidays are over, and I am pretty much healed from my surgeries, I will have more energy to be online more often. I am able to go walking and go to the pool. First time in many many years I am without pain. I am very happy !! Have a very pleasant evening. Hugz CJ

Hi manapua, it's great to be in touch with you. I am glad you are here. This is an incredible place to meet people and build new friendships. Some people pop in when they need support or information. It's always good to reconnect with familiar faces. Let's stay in touch! Gary

Hi everyone! I was just diagnosed 2weeks ago and I still have so many unanswered questions. Im taking 1500mg, 3 times a day on metformin and I feel like crap.. Does the med make you a little dizzy? Eyes that trying to adjust? I can not eat. Im pushing 600-700 calories a day, drinking nothing but water, taking thyroid meds too! Please help with me some advice! I will probably ask more questions later. Thanks everyone!!!!

jayabee52 2013-03-21 14:37:12 -0500 Report

Howdy Card.

What is the met doing to you? Are you taking the met before during or after your meals? When I was on Met, I had no side effects whatever.

You mention calories per day. For People with Diabetes (PWDs) really the more vital information is how many carbohydrates (carbs) per meal (or per day) are you having. The number of carbs is recommended for you depends on your gender and your activity level. That is something you should consult with your Dr or RD to determine your target carb intake per day. Then you can divide that number by the number of meals you intend to eat. What I hear is that 6 small meals is helpful for losing weight and for Blood Glucose (BG) regulation.

I pray you get your questions answered well.

Hi Manapua, I have been busy lately and have not been here much. I liked the DC page on Facebook. I do not accept a lot of people as friends on Facebook because of who I have as friends on that site. I also will unfriend anyone who thinks I need to know what they are doing all day long.

I think some people use this site for a specific reason such as getting information. Once they get it, they move on. Others may be busy and really don't have time.

Fatigue with diabetes is a common situation and can be due to a lot of factors. Sometimes it is from chronic high blood sugars, sometimes even a vitamin deficiency. I had very low vitamin D levels, which when treated helped my energy level tremendously. Exercise also had a great effect on my energy!! Stay well my friend

Hi, I'm on here and Facebook regularly. I should cut down… LMBO. DC is the only place I'm able to vent or share information about my health issues.. I don't have to shy away from being embarrassed, because someone has been through it or is going through it. On FB I only repost. I have one DC friend in FB. I don't mind friending people on either social networking site.

Hi Gwen I repost from DC on my facebook page. I love the cute and funny postings, the serious ones and the recipes. Some of my friends have gotten tested because of reposting DC's information.

I understand. I do same anything healthy and positive. I repost about every disease, not just diabetes. We all need awareness.

Your problems can be someone else's problem, that's the reason why people share. Knowing that you're not alone. And ways to help each other. Take care.

Lately work life had been taking all my energy. We have had several residents go on hospice, then pass away. Some other residents conditions had progressed from assisted living to skilled nursing care and needed more care as this happened prior to their moving to a nursing home. So my off work time was spent in physical, mental, and emotional self care time. For 3 weeks I even skipped the Tuesday night carb fest at The Cake Lady's (aka Mom's).
Perhaps other's haven't been here as much because other parts of their lives have been busy with good or bad events.

As usual, another interesting point. I am prepared to endure another wave of rants for expressing an opinion, but this isn't a very active site. Period. There are a relative handful who participate and perhaps many lurkers. If you look at the sites "members", it is woefully low. There are better diabetes sites.
Having said that, there will be a modest swarm of "this is the best site and I know" replies, from the same number of people who responded when I expressed my opinion last time.

I just look at it philosophically. I'm not the sole arbiter of what should and shouldn't be included so many topics affect many people in different ways. People's health changes (hopefully positively as well as negatively) and information is helpful to review. Others share experiences because it is therapeutic for them, while others have advanced information and are extremely generous with it.

All in all, I visit the site…but it's honestly far from my preferred source. We're already "friends" and I hope things are going well for you.

All the best.

Question - If you are not fond of this site then why are you still here??? I was on some others which, frankly, were boring so I left them.

That is really an interesting perspective. I'm sorry that you don't find the site very helpful.

We're happy to report that we are continuing to grow and that our members are increasing in the depth of their participation. Further, I think what I enjoy most here is the kindness of those who visit here. People are genuinely concerned for each other and willing to share insights and support to help everyone on their way. That's tough to replace.

Please continue to be patient as we grow. Good things are happening and good things are on the horizon.

John I find the site very helpful !!!!!!!!!!!!! No complaints about site … I'm just wondering where my friends are … I requested some , some requested me … It's like like they use the site for a couple of days then they vanish ??? Must I send a personal message to all my friends on this site and ask if they are still alive ??? That's what I mean … There are those that post on a regular basis but most others I guess are tired or something , I just don't hear from people … That's all I'm trying to say … Lets all continue to share our knowledge , our opinions , our lives , the ups and downs of diabetes … Lets continue to support each other … I just want to hear from all if you … I think I got 98 friends yet sadly I can't really get to know them because it seems they hardly use the site …

Nick1962 2013-03-19 18:35:51 -0500 Report

One of the things I noticed after a while here is if you take a look at your list of friends, and look how many friends they have, there’s almost a direct corollary to their participation (with some exceptions). Usually 80 and above is some sign that they are here and participating, below that and it is usually a “drive by” just here to try the site out or got what they wanted and moved on (again, with exceptions). There’s only about ¼ on my list that I have routine contact with, another ¼ I SHOULD have contact with (sorry to those), and the rest simply were only temporary to begin with. Just seems to be the nature of it I guess. I went through some posts just 3 years old and with the exception of 2 didn’t recognize anyone.
There is kind of a “rolling” membership also. Things I learned when I came on I started offering to newbies myself, and anything I had to offer, the newbies learned and spread as well. In essence, people get replaced. The weekly topics rarely change, just who answers them, and I’m glad for that because it means people are learning and sharing. Still a nice place.

jayabee52 2013-03-17 23:49:13 -0500 Report

Howdy Chris!

There have been at least 3 discussions asking where folks here are from. Those are : (12 pages) (2 pages) (1 page)

Of course that covers those who have been here for a while but not recent newbies to the site.

I don't think you are ranting (at least from this end of the wire)

Lentyl 2013-03-21 17:33:31 -0500 Report

I suppose that there are times when most everyone is busy and can't get here as much or as often as they would like. Sometimes I read and don't contribute not because I'm not interested but because I have nothing to contribute to a particular topic at a given time. Sometimes people are not feeling well and maybe don't have a lot of spare energy. I know that happens to me occasionally. One person posted about being disappointed that no one every clicked the like button. I must have read that posting about 2 months ago. Unfortunately none of us can be happy all of the time. As you know diabetes can take the starch out of you in no time. Then we have a waiting period.

Hello!! Sorry, I only use facebook for my kids and niece and nephews. I'm not real big on it. I have been busy with many new projects going on with youngest daughter and then with my husband as well. I have popped on here for a quick look see, but not really to post:( I'm currently reading like crazy to catch up when I have some time to myself.

Hope all is well with you and that you had a wonderful St Paddy's say.
