To make healthy behaviors a part of your life everyday is no easy job in this fast paced, fast food world. Changing your behaviors and making them stick is hard work. We have days when we are successful and days that don't go as we plan. It is important we learn to remove roadblocks. Don't let other people in your life expect too much of you or set you up for defeat. All you can do is the best you can each day.
As we try to change our behaviors to a healthy lifestyle remember, take it one step at a time. Some goals may take months or even years to achieve.
Be ready, willing and able to change. Perhaps you can see the behaviors that you need to change, how important is this to you?
Choose what to change- Pick one change-that has to do with eating and another with physical activity. If you can successfully change one habit, you're more likely to tackle the other with more enthusiam.
Set some goals- write them down and keep them handy, on the refrigerator or your purse or wallet. If you don't reach your goals then why not make them easier the next time you try them to really accomplish them. Set another goal that you can reach and see how proud you are of your hard work!

Thank you MewElla, I think I needed this, lately life has taken a few sharp turns for me, which definitely has impacted BG readings. Since I like to be in control, I am dreading my next doctor visit, because I know my A1c won't be as good as it was last time. This helps to say, hey there were reasons, along with illness, I am not perfect and that's okay! Today is a new day!

Great post MewElla. To change is only tough if you choose to make it tough. Changing anything in your life requires an open mind, the willingness to make the change and thinking outside the box. Changes in life should be viewed as a growing up phase and you can grow all through life. Changing requires looking at and doing things differently. Only you can make decisions on how to make the change. Others can help you but only you can make that decision because your decision is going to have an effect on you.

You can not stop anyone from expecting too much from you. People will put high expectations on others and then expect them to live up to those expectations. If you fall into the trap of living up to the expectations of others, you set yourself up to fail.

The other problem with change is fear of the unknown. People won't change because they fear how the change will effect them. Change also requires adding responsibility to making the change. If a person is diagnosed with diabetes, they become shocked, go into denial or won't take the responsibility of changing to eat healthier or to add exercise to help with weight loss. There are also those who refuse to help themselves and find blame as to why their health isn't improving.

I agree that goals should always be set in a manner they can be accomplished. If you set your goal so high you can't reach it, don't be disappointed because you didn't make it. You can't start jogging today and run a marathon in 2 weeks. When you are successful be your own cheering section. Others may not care or may only say great and move on to something else. Don't always expect a pat on the back.

Finally, people have to take responsibility for their disease and stop expecting everyone in the family and all of their friends to help them and be supportive. Not everyone can be a part of your support system. You have to be strong enough to travel the road alone at times because a support system can't be with you 24/7. Become self motivating and self supporting for the times when members of your support system are busy doing other things. Being positive about changing and making things work well for you will be the biggest benefit in life.
