Had my Doctor's appointment and doing great, all tests turned out wonderful except the cholosteral, it was up a bit which was my fault. I had been reading about these statins and some of the articles had said not to take them because of the many after effects and what it can do to the body. I told my Doctor that I had decided to take my self off of the statins (which was a mistake) and he said not to stop taking any medications before consulting with him. So I am back taking them as I did before, you know I really did not feel any different when I stopped taking them. I guess this is a lesson learned, do not stop taking medications unless you consult your Doctor, now that I think of it I should have use a little common sense right. Have any of you guys ever dtopped taking medication and had good results before consulting the Doctor?

My 1st wife needed statins because of her high cholesterol readings. And she was put on statins for a brief period. But got muscle aches from taking them and blood tests showed that it was negatively affecting her liver. So she was taken off of them by the Dr.

Yes, I don't take my statins because it causes my lower back and hips to hurt incredibly. I told him time and time again, but he keeps giving me the prescription. The way I found out that it was hurting me was that I had run out.
All that said, my levels still reduced in my last lab and it's been over a year since I have taken the statins.

It is not something that I really recommend, but since my doctor would not listen to me when I told him what was going on, I chose to stop.

Thank you Gabby for your reply, I am thinking about stopping again because I do think just walking will help me keep the cholesterol down as well as my diet. I cannot truly say that I felt any better not taking the statins perhaps I did not wait long enough. I do get check every three months for this now it is every four months/ Will keep you informed

I have stopped taking my Simvistatin about 3 yrs ago. I really never had a problem with cholesterol and when my Dr Rx'd me for a statin drug I asked why, since I had "perfect" cholesterol. Dr said it was "prophylactic". So that I didn't develop heart problems in the future. I should have said no then, but I went along with it and took simvistatin for several years for no good reason.

I still have excellent cholesterol. I guess I am one of those forutunate people in that way. My 1st wife, however, had a family history of high cholesterol and heart problems, and she eventually needed a 5 way bypass.

I wonder about who my sons take after in that regard. I hope it is me.

Hi Gabby-my doctor wanted me to take statins because my cholesterol was high. I emphatically told her I was concerned about liver damage and I did not feel comfortable taking them. She assured me I would be tested every 6 months to make sure it was still safe. I still refused because I've got a friend who developed cirroisis of the liver while taking statins. Anyway, to make a long story short, I took up exercising 3x a week and watching my fat intake. I am happy to say my cholesterol is way down, and my triglycerides are also within range without statins. My doctor was impressed and asked me how I did it.

I agree Janney, exercise does help I was walking every single day, now that it is warming up I will continue and perhaps stop the statins after these results. Thank you for your reply
