It doesn't surprise me in the least. The same kind of things happened with Crisco. The reason it got so popular was that they did an advertising campaign! Convinced housewives that it was healthier than butter or lard.
They're at it right now with their campaigns touting "Sugar is Sugar" well YEA and we eat more of it now than we ever have as a nation. Especially High Fructose Corn Syrup. Once I started looking for that ingredient on labels as was amazed at how many things it shows up in. http://articles.businessinsider.com/2012-02-1...
yes, the sugar and tobacco companies in the past wanted to pull the wool over consumers'eyes by snake oil science. That was then this is now. What I would rather like to see is the "Smoking Gun" for "Big arga" corporations like Monsanto and Con Agra relating to the Genetically Modifies Organisms they are pushing on consmers today.
I just watched the video and yes, I have always thought that big business continually fought to make sugar the best thing since sliced bread. Afterall the consumer wasn't as important as the bottom line on the ledger. I can remember those ads or some very similar.
