I'm so sick!

Okay, I'm rarely sick and not a very good patient. I have that sore throat/coughing thing that is going around and all I want to eat is what my Mom used to fix me when I was young and sick. Mashed potatoes and 7-Up. Not the best dietary choices for a diabetic . I keep thinking that my numbers are bad anyway, maybe it's the best time to eat a big plate of mashed potatoes… what do you eat when you're sick?

For a sore throat, I have always used ice cream or sorbet. Sugar free ice cream doesn't taste quite as good, but it does help my throat and keeps my bg levels from spiking. For congestion, stuffy nose, sinuses blocked, etc. I always have chicken noodle soup with a bit of Tobasco sauce. It always helps to get me "unstuffed". Sometimes I add cheyenne pepper and garlic salt.

BTW, this is the first year I have ever gotten a flu vaccination. Since the vaccination, I have had the flu twice. Go figure!

thats why i dont get the flu vaccination..to much of a chance of getting the flu after getting the shot..i wont swear to it.but i think the last time i got one.was back in 6th grade.and that was around 48 years ago

I had never gotten one, nor have I been so sick this many times in such a short span of time. It really makes you wonder. Of course, being sick makes my blood glucose levels go up, which makes it even harder to recover.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm better now, but making a list for the next time. I had never made provisions for a sick day (or days!) because I so rarely get sick, so I was taken by surprise.
I had never gotten flu shots either until my son was born premature and the doctor wanted the whole family vaccinated that first winter. So, my son and I have continued to get the shots (he's 16 now) and he has never had the flu, and this is the first time I've had a virus since before he was born. I think there's just so many viruses this year, and the shot only innoculates one against one particular strain.

I have had relatively few cases of the flu in my life, so I never really felt the need to get the innoculation. I finally did it this year after reading article after article about how much worse this year was from previous ones. I'm pretty sure now that the reason I didn't get the flu often before was because I didn't have a child attending public school. 2nd graders are not exactly known for their hygine, and it seems like every week there is some new disease going around the school.

Hi, sorry to here you are not well. I am still getting over my bug and what I used for my sore throat was lemongrass and ginger tea with a LITTLE bit of honey and some lemon juice squeezed in. It is so yummy and it really soothe the throut and also actually helps with cough. Forget the mash, have real chicken soup and feed your soul. Good luck with it all and a speedy recovery to you.

I don't think it's quite the flu, because my stomach is fine. I think it's a respiratory virus of some sort. Thank you for the well wishes.

Thank you, that's what I've been doing. Sleeping and watching tv for 3 days. I can't believe how much I've slept!

I am SO sorry to hear that Calico!

My mom would give me 7-up and lightly buttered toast during my sick days.

I don't know about eating those mashed potatoes. Your Blood Glucose (BG) levels are up already, so why add to the problem and compound your difficulty.

The saying "starve a cold, feed a fever" comes to mind. Cough/sore throat is which of these, exactly?

I pray that you get over whatever it is soon

CaliKo 2013-03-02 15:48:33 -0600 Report

I have been sipping on some 7-up, but not too much. Thanks for the prayers, you're in mine too.
