How many grams of carb do most of you consume per meal/snack and is your diabetes treated with insulin?

I started on the recommended 80 carbs per meal which was way to much for me, now I eat around 60 grams of carbs spread throughout the day and my BS doesn't spike that much. I mainly eat non starchy veg and as much protein with each meal as possible. Check your BS few hrs after each time you eat something new, this ll help you nail down what's spiking you. Always eat protein with carb intakes. Hope this helps, I was diagnosed a month with type 1 and know exactly how tough it can be adjusting.

I do not count them by meal but do take a daily count which is 90 to 120. This averages out to about 40 a meal. I use to do 60 a day but that was to lose weight. Everybody is different so keep a log book and you will know what is right for you. Oh, Welcome to DC

Hi Dania,

Jayabee is right. That's really a general number to start you out with. I was given the same recommendation when diagnosed. However, after keeping track of my carbs and testing, testing, testing for awhile, I realized that I didn't need that many carbs. I usually do just fine with anywhere from 25-35 carbs per meal and a 20 carb snack. You may need more (or less) though. It all depends on your body. Just test alot and keep a food diary and that will help you figure out what's best for you. Good luck!

Howdy Dania

Carb needs are very personal and various factors are taken into account when a RD gives you a target number of carbs per day or meal. AS a GENERAL rule it is 45 to 60 carb grams per meal if you are looking at a 3 meal per day plan.

For ladies the general rule is 30 to 45 carb gms for 3 meals.

If one wants to divide your food intake into 5 or 6 meals per day add the 3 meals together and divide by the number of meals you desire. You also need to take into account the carb grams of any snacks one consumes as well.
