A good friend in northern Indiana is a type 2 diabetic, and he's also living with congestive heart failure. He recently switched up his medications, going from Byetta to Victoza along with taking Lantus and his other meds. He drew a cartoon for us over at DiabetesMine, and also wrote about this med-routine change.

If you're so inclined, please go with Mike well and let him know if you've gone through anything like this! He also writes over at My Diabetic Heart! Thanks.

I started out taking Byetta.. Stayed on it for 3 months. Was sick 24/7. The nausea was horrible. My BG didn't really improve that much. Stopped Byetta, started Victoza on lowest dose. I was nauseated again. It took me weeks to get adjusted to that. I have been on Victoza for almost 3 months now on the highest dose 1 shot a day. No weight loss. I don't understand this because everyone looses 30-40 pds on Byetta and/or Victoza. Actually I have gained about 8 pds. I hate it!!! My BG is better, more stable.. But still up and down periodically.

Byetta - after the nausea and the pnuemonia effects , I tried for 6 months and it was awful. Numbers went up. I tried Actos and gained 30 pounds in a month. I just started Victoza. I tried the 1.2 dosage. I lived in the bathroom for 2 days. And I mean lived. Numbers were fantastic. I slept like a baby. I am Add and I have trouble sleeping. I was ready to quit it and said ok let me figure this out. I started with .06 and have slowly weekly doing one little click at a time. The rotten eggs burping is rough. But has gotten better. My numbers are great. But I have to be careful. I take Lantus and Gillmepride. The lantus was 60 units and now I am down to 50 depending upon the day and the numbers. I use to take humalog inbetween meals to keep the numbers down. I dont need to unless I eat really stupid.

I used to take both … The Byetta made me nauseated all the time when my doc switched my to the Victoza I was like woohoo I found the best medication ever … Boy was I wrong :( … I ended up in the hospital for a week with pancreatitis and real bad pain that I don't wish on anyone !! I was on IV's and feeding tubes …so I don't personally recommend anyone taking it … I hope your friend does well on it !!! I wish him good luck !!!!

I was just researching Byetta and looking for folks that have been taking that to see what their experiences have been with it.

My experience with Byetta was not good. It started out that I had just a bit of an upset stomach. I found some ginger gum and that seemed to take care of it. The longer I was on it though, the worse the symptoms grew. It got to the point that I couldn't stay out of the bathroom. I had constant diahrrea and nausea. After 4 months of this I had had enough and took myself off of it. High doses of metformin did the same things to me.
