Morning Breakfast
So this morning I had two boiled eggs, a banana and some milk. The milk was mini size as oppose to the regular size bottle. Good yes? Lol

None of us here are experts per se when it comes to diabetes. But knowledge is power an one has to do their own research in addition to hearing what the actual experts have to say. But thanks to everyone for their input. I really do appreciate it.
Absolutely, you are right, most of us are not experts. And sometimes even the experts have some gaps in knowledge.
I would have left off the banana. That's just me though. My bloodsugar reacts badly to really sweet fruit.
I like almond milk, I don't have it around all the time, but what you had sounds good so long as the milk was skim or 1%, even in class they told us they did not really want us to even have 1%, but sometimes I still do, that is what hubby wants for himself and what my kids wants, and it is too expensive to have 2 kinds all the time, so sometimes I have no choice, but that breakfast sounds like you are doing good. You are eating protein with the banana. Bananas are one of the more sugary fruits, but a small one with enough protein isn't a problem for most. I like that kind of b'fast myself, sometimes I wll cut up a small banana and put on a cereal that has fiber and protein in it.
Actually the class leader was not aware of the fat slowing down the digestion of the lactose (milk SUGAR) in the milk. So from the viewpoint of sugar absorption 4% is superior to skim or 1% I am sure they were telling you to avoid milk fat to avoid saturated fats. So one has to weigh the one idea against the other. My bias is to avoid the BG gain from the non fat milk.
Now what was your sugar count 2 hours after eating? Let testing be your gage for you. Diabetes is not a one shoe fits all. You can tweak things to your own personal needs and results. What works for one may not be right for you and vice versa. The important thing is that you care and are trying. Make best friends with your meter though!
the breakfast that keeps my numbers in check is my own personal "egg muffins" . . in a large bowl i mix a few tablespoons of bisquik, 2 eggs, diced tomatoes, a little bit of shredded cheddar cheese, some left over shredded chicken breast (or any shredded meat you prefer or non at all), slim milk to moisten it, minced onion and salt and pepper . . mix it up in bowl and add mixture to muffin pans sprayed with cooking spray and cook on 350 til fluffy . . let cool and enjoy (recipe can be tweaked to individual and preference)
Sounds wonderful, Dia Betty!
Thx! I may have to try that.
I am TYPE 1 and my neice (who lives with me) had a dairy allergy so I am ALWAYS tweaking recipes or creating new recipes . . this one is fun to tweak cause its simple and my neice LOVES it with vanilla flavored almond milk (which is not only healthy but taste pretty good as well) . . let me know how it turns out for you
I love almond milk. I prefer it over regular milk.
Ilearned how to find my average blood sugar on my breeze meter I have more to learn I would like to know if my average will match what my next A1C will show, if it is acurate it will be very usefull to me as I do not have a home A1C tester
L
well L, your meter will only average the readings you have taken. If you test only 3 x a day you will be averaging 3 data points. Like averaging snapshots.
An A1c is like a movie. It is an averaqge of your Blood Glucose (BG) for 90 days for 24 hrs a day. It is also more weighted more toward the last 2 weeks of your BG levels. so any averages would be way off, especially if your BGs are different during the day.
Well said.
But its always good to track your own health as well. My parents taught me that.
that makes sense Jay I test 4zx a day plus 2hrs post meals,
I guess Iam just going to invest in the home A!C unit Iam sure it would be worth i L
Yes it is worth it. Target has it for $30. Its good to use so you can keep track of your A1c levels at home instead of waiting until you go to the doctor.
really thats not bad I thought they would be more expensive thanks
I also have WaveSense the app on my Iphone where I track my blood sugars. It is a great app to use.
try a half of a banana I count 1/2 as a fruit choice b/c they are high carb or pair it with a protein (like you did) my favorite breakfast is 1/2 banana, Old fashioned oatmeal and some walnuts a better alternative to banana nut bread! :-)

I'll add a +1 to PetiePal's response - better. In the end your meter will tell you so keep investigating.
Well it was 2% milk. I thought bananas was suppose to be good for you. Ugh!! Thought I was doing good. I made an appointment to go see doctor next Friday. I'm going to get some bloodwork done to see of anything else is going on. The Januvia should be working. I've tried taking it before I eat an even after I eat and my sugars are still high.
Bananas are good for you but that's part of the balancing act. A medium banana has about 27g. carbs, 14g. sugars, but only 1g. of protein. For someone like me who was trying to lose weight, that in itself would almost be a whole meal. Learning to read labels and look up foods will help. Don't worry, you'll get it.
WOW! I did NOT realize how many carbs and sugars in a banana! Thanks for the info!!
Yeah shocked me too but you also get 0 cholesterol, sodium and fat. While an Egg McMuffin gives you just about ther same carbs, it has about 15 times more protein and less sugar (but you get the fat, cholesterol and sodium with it too).
I'd oprt for the egg mcmuffin because of the higher protein, but for some watching fat, cholesterol and sodium, the banana might be better. It's all about finding out what your body needs.
I usually have a Dunkin Donuts Bacon Egg and Cheese on an english muffin almost daily. Cholesterol they say isn't affected as much by eggs as we were once taught, and the carb load is just right. Even with a large coffee my levels stay great to lunch.
It depends on my days workload. Weekdays in front of the computer its usually just fruit, but weekends or field work days when I'm on the road and more active I do the breakfast sandwich because the protein load helps spread the carb load.
Sounds weird but that's actually been the fun part of this - figuring out what foods to what.
Yea even after 4 years of being diabetic. I see I have alot to learn.
It never stops. It wasn't until a year ago that i learned my meter can be up to 20% off!
really? What in the world? So are you saying that the readings can be inaccurate? Have any of you tried the A1c home test? You can get it from places like CVS. I had one, it was really helpful. I am actually planning on buying another one today.
I use the following calculation: average of last 90 days BG readings plus 77.3 divided by 35.6 equals A1c. I’m usually within .2 of my doctor.
All of them can be off, which is why it's best to not switch between too many. 2 at most.
Now let me clue you in on something that shocked me…Skim Milk can actually be worse for a diabetic! It spikes your sugar more than say 1-2% because the fat in that milk can actually help it be absorbed slower. That was a good breakfast but be careful a whole banana has a lot of carbs in it. Better to go with 1/2. Add some nuts in there!
wow Ithought the non fat meal was suppose to be better I would actually prefer 2% myself
Whole milk (4% milkfat) delays the carbs even longer!
thanksj I am switching I had forgotten that info on fats delaying the spikes
Thanks PetiePal! I thought I was doing great with skim milk! Good to know!
I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it works better than cow's beverage by far. If you are counting calories it has 40 calories. Milk is about 3 times that. Also I found that 1 tbsp. (by measure) of whipping cream in coffee is great - no carbs to speak of an a bit of fat too. Learned this from Dr. Richard Bernstein's book.
Yeah people think fat = the enemy but honestly 1-2% will be slower absorbed and keep you feeling fuller. They actually taught me at diabetic class if you're super low instead of OJ you could slam a glass of Skim.
