Okay so I can't seem to find an answer to this so I figured I'd ask on here! Who are better experts then other diabetics right? haha! Well I want to know do Diabetics have weaker immune systems then non diabetics? My boyfriend has pneumonia and he is so scared that I will automatically get it because I'm diabetic. Anyone know for sure? Oh I am a type 1 diabetic just so you guys know! :P

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. I've had t1 for about 27 years. Yes, even if you have good control and someone has something contagious. Be cautious.

Haha! I guess whether you have diabetes or not it's always good to be cautious! I always try to be! :)

If your diabetes is under good control, it's unlikely your immune system will be compromised. Here's a good case study on me!

Before I was diagnosed in the 2007-2009 range, I would get maybe 4-5 sinus infections a year. A few colds, scratchy throats, etc. Diagnosed in Summer of 2009. My blood sugars are in great control, I'm on great medicines and my A1C is in the great range. I haven't been sick in nearly 3 years, and around plenty who were.

That actually seems to make good sence! I was diagnosed a little over a year ago and I remember having to miss school at least 1 day a week because I was constantly sick before I was diagnosed. Sure I still get sick once in a while but usually about once or twice a year!

I have been told that our immune systems are weaker being type 1 diabetics. Not sure about type 2

I read the article with my boyfriend and we also read another one in which when it comes to Pneumonia non diabetics have the same percentage as diabetics.
