New To Carb Counting

Hi all. I have been a diabetic for 18 years. Only recently I was introduced to carb counting. At the minute it is doing what is supposed to and keeping my sugars around the same level- however that level is always in the teens or twenties? :-/ I have struggled with high blood sugar all my life although I am really trying to control it now! My ratio is 1.2 units to 10g carbs… I'm not 100% sure but if my sugars are staying high should I try increasing the ratio? Thanks everyone! :) xx

Thanks for this info! Oh it can be frustrating at times! :( I feel like I can't do right for doing wrong at the min! :( I go by the book 100% when it comes to my carb counting… However I seem to be taking more injections that I do anything else in the day! But I will cut back on the fruit and try a bit more fibre!! Thank u! :)

Hey all sorry haven't been on touch. I am eating extremely healthy t the minute however my sugars r sky high. I am only after checking my bloods and they are 28mmols which is crazy!!! I am eating a lot of fruit at the mo- does fruit rise any of it sugars?? X

Yes fruit does raise one's Blood Glucose (BG) level, especially certain fruits. Banana, grapes and Pineapple are especially high in carbs for me. (haven't eaten banana for several years)

Plus it depends on the amount of fruit consumed. Even berry fruits which are lower on the carb counts can raise one's BG if consumed in greater quantities than a recommended serving, will raise my BG levels.

So perhaps you might wish to back off on the fruit a bit. Yes fruit is better (healthier) to eat than say a couple of slices of bread, but find out the recommended serving sizes from somewhere like one of these 2 websites: ~ and ~

From here it sounds like you meals need to be more balanced with more veggies and also proteins. And see if you can include some fiber in your meals as well, as that helps lower BG levels as well.

I'm totally confused. If as diabetics we have a problem processing surgar, then why wouldn't we count the carbs we eat? Are docs thinking that insulin will cover everything? But a dietician? You need a new dietician. Too many carbs puts our body in overload because it can't handle the sugar thats why we count. The meds help our body to process what carbs we do eat. Because we can't live without carbs. We just have to be careful. Please do more research on your own and find a new dietician. And we are always glad to help

Howdy Ecamden!

All foods are composed of 3 different macronutrients. Carbohydrates, Lipids (fats) and Protein. There are micronutrients which comprise foods and drinks, but for simplicity's sake we won't delve into that.

Yes, carb counting is, I would guess, the Diabetes Mellitus (DM) control of choice among us here in the USA. I myself use it to keep my DM in the normalized range.

You may learn more about Carb counting here ~

OH and BTW, since you are not from USA, our Blood Glucose (BG) reading numbers may be foreign to you as well. A conversion tool from our (mg/dl) measuremts, to yours may be found here ~ If you would convert your BG readings into it would help us understand your readings, or at least post your measurement (mmol/l) with your numbers. It will save some confusion among us.

Hi Amy if your saying the your carb counting with a ratio of 1.2 to 10g of carbs and your bloods are staying around the same then the ratio is correct the problem is your bloods are level but high.. This indicates to me that the your background insulin isn't correct and that you probally need more also if you are high before eating make sure you using the ratio given to you for correcting I've been carb counting for 3 years now and only just got it about right with levels below 12 most pf the time it was so hard but you'll get there in the end xx

I agree with Lou. I was diagnosed last year with type 2. I read the book and since cut most carbs out of my diet. In three months, I was down to 5.3. This includes exercise and eating regular portions and adding several smaller snacks between meals. I started counting carbs and portions. After a few weeks, I figured out the foods that were good at maintaining a low bg. Over the last six months, I've been 5.1 for my a1c. Good luck.

U all have scared me a little… I live on mashed potato, rice and pasta!! But then this is what I have been told that I must eat as a diabetic… My dietician keeps telling me I need carbs carb carbs… But it's not getting me anywhere! :( I'm restricting to 120 carbs now and I'm going to try to stay away from these foods! I woke up this morning and my sugars were 32mmol… Crazy!!! I ended up in bed all day feeling so rotten! :( the last time they were that I ended up in hospital!!

Your dietician is full of carbs and other unmentionable things! Just because the dietician may have a degree doesn't mean that he/she knows what is best for people with diabetes. I agree with Lentyl below, that, IMHO, your dietician's advice was detrimental, irresponsible and maybe even negligent. As I've mentioned before, the turning point for me was reading Dr Richard Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution", which alerted me to the role carbs play in blood sugar levels. Dr Bernstein advocated our cutting back on carbs long before it was accepted by the mainstream medical community. (And some "experts" still haven't accepted this approach.) A physician himself as well as being a type 1 diabetic, he analyzed and discovered what worked well for him. Amy, you are not alone in this and DC is a great forum for info, discussion and, yes, different points of view and approaches to our managing our diabetes and all that entails.

If you have not looked at the cook books on the site, I really suggest it. I have tried a few from the 21 day one, and they are easy, and it gives the nutrition information with it so you can keep an eye on what you are taking in. I have been told diet and exercise are my keys to control. Good luck.

I'm sorry to say that I consider the advice that you were given was not only detrimental to your health but also irresponsible. Potatoes, rice, pasta and any other "white" foods like cakes, cookies, etc. are going to work against your diabetes. These foods begin turning into glucose as soon as you put them into your mouth. The husband of my acupunturist is a chef. He was asked by the university to come up with recipes that would be inexpensive and suitable for students with diabetes. He did that but the dietitian pushed in and said that the recipes should had lots of things like pasta because pasta is cheap. The chef was so disgusted that he withdrew.

The whole idea, as I understand it, is to have a low carbohydrate intake so that you need not have to take large doses of medication, be it insulin or oral meds.

At one time I was on a couple of other sites and any number of people said that dietitians had told them to eat lots of carbs and every one of the people with diabetes had very high BG readings as a resuilt. They all said that they wouldn't go near a dietitian again. Frankly, I never went to a dietitian in the first place, but that's just me.

Yes I will not be going near a dietician again!! Because I will always be told to eat these things! :-/ do u know any sites that have low carb recipes that r not overly expensive- that is one of the main reasons I think y I don't eat low carbs unfortunately!! :( but I know something has to change… My health is so bad ATM!

There are any number of sites. Type in low carbohydrate recipes and you will porobably get hundreds of sites. Then have fun checking out thedifferent sites and their recipes. That's what I did. Happy hunting :D

Wow sounds exactly like me I am just starting to do same thing have been getting not ban results 12 - 5 but things like mash and rice I can't seem to get them right any clues to how you do that ? I am on the novo act rapid insulin (yellow band ) any tips or help you'll be literally saving my life

jayabee's right Carlo, the best kind of potato you can have is a small baked potato and brown rice if you must have rice and watch your portions! white pasta is a big no-no too, I've never tried wheat pasta but even that has major carbs. The less 'white foods' you eat the better off you are :). If you do eat any of it…portion control, portion control, portion control. Also you must eat it with a protein AND veggies—the largest part of your meal being the veggies-corn is a huge starch and has no nutrional value so I personally leave that out completely of my diet. This can be a lot to take in all at once and it sucks big time, good luck :).

big clue, Carlo, ditch the "mash" (mashed potatoes?) and the rice. They're high on the glycemic load scale! You'll always be having trouble keeping your Blood Glucose (BG) levels under control eating those.

I go by what the hospital says, about 70 or less in carbs per day. I can eat less, and still my number will be up. Sometimes I go 50 a day. But I am trying to loose weight to. So I watch it very closely. 30 to 40 carbs a day.

Repeating myself, when I started carb counting 30+ yrs ago, I stayed at 60 or less a day to lose weight. It worked but with this condition from what I have read, you need more than 60. It can also depend on the person. Now I stop at 100 or 110 carbs a day and it seems to be working. Still holding down the weight and BS reading in normal range. Except for last night, I really pigged out on the taco samiches. Must have gone over 200 carbs :( and this morning it showed on the BS test. Sooooooo back to work on keeping BS low.

Carb counting has helped me in the past. There's something a little comforting about knowing how many carbs, fiber, protein, etc I need to be striving for in a day. That said, sometimes I don't always get it right. I used to kick myself about that, but have learned that we will make mistakes. One of the keys is to not let too many mistakes ruin or dictate you actions.

That's how I used to think too. The fact of the matter is, there isn't a right or wrong answer. It's all relative, in that it only matters to how it effects your particular diet. I can't eat carrots without it raising my levels but can eat all the corn I want. Just found that out. Really? That is why I don't have a prob with being sort of fanatic about carb, etc, counting. The info is invaluable in the long run.

Hi - there are many things that carb counting helps. Do you test often? I found that dense foods like RyVita rather than that lovely soft wheat bread (sigh, because I love to make bread) is much better for my numbers. Have you had some support from a certified diabetes educator or dietitian? I've noticed that there are some here who can tolerate more carbs than others. I had to stop eating potatoes, beef and pork because they raised my BG levels too high. I'm convinced that carb counting has helped me a great deal. Lost 30 pounds with CHO counting. Nothing to sneeze at. I consume about 110 mg of CHO a day.

I test maybe 6 times per day! And I thought I was wing accurate with the carbs… My diabetic specialist hasn't mentioned that I should have a limit on the amount of carbs I eat… Did u figure that out urself or did ur doc do that? I don't think my doc is educated enough perhaps? I feel like I'm just a confused diabetic on the road to nowhere! :( I have been eating what I want and trying to do the carb counting correctly! Infact I prob have put on weight from I started it! :( I would eat potatoes every day - and white bread?

Amy, my nutritionist told me to curb my carbs at 30g for two meals of the day and 45 for the third. I stopped cold turkey on all white foods and she said that wasn't good—but my A1C was great! And I was never hungry. I ate tons of veggies..salads which included shredded cheeses, black olives, everything but the kitchen sink and for a regular meal it was a meat (protein) plus a small bag of steamer veggies from the frozen section :). My regular bs readings were always down to 130 which was my 14 AND 30 day avgs. Just sayin'

Actually as soon as I received a diagnosis I started reading everything that I could find about diabetes and diet. I decided that it was up to me to be proactive. The book most helpful was written by Dr. Stanley Mirsky - The Diabetes Survival Guide. Dr. Mirsky's brother was diagnosed with diabetes at age 19. He followed the Joslin diet, lived for 50 years with diabetes and died of unrelated problems. That said lots to me. Dr. Mirsky worked with Dr. Ellot Joslin who founded the Joslin Diabetes Institute in Boston. According to their research each major meal should have no more than 45 gm. of carbohydrates and each snack no more than 15. Three meals and three snacks comes to 180 gms. of carbohydrates/day. I followed this regimine and was quite successful. My beginning BG was over 33 and in four or five months it had gone down to 12 and I'd lost 30 pounds, which made me very happy. Potatoes and all white foods are really not good for people with diabetes. As soon as you put them into your mouth they begin to change to sugar and are quickly absorbed.

Dr. Mirsky's book covers everything in an easily readable format. He has lists of what constitutes a good diet for people with diabetes. Perhaps you can find the book. I think that it is still readily available and isn't pricey. Reading the book actually made me feel that there was "someone on my side" trying to help me. I no longer felt alone with this health issue.

I'm sure that you have been doing your best to try and get yourself organized. Good for you!!! I've found, and from what I read here, so have many others discovered that diabetes is a daily exploration. Bodies react differently all the time. Living with diabetes is a daily process. Eating whatever we want is no longer a viable optiion. We have to be proactive with our diet.

I am a devoted carb counter and have achieved better weight and BG control by limiting my carbs to no more than 120 grams per day. My last A1c was 6.9 which is OK but I'm working on getting it still lower. I am on an insulin pump and use Novolog. Did you know that you might need a different carb to insulin ratio for different times of day? I didn't until I started using a pump in August 2011. Because I am highly sensitive to insulin my ratios are as follows: Midnight to 10:30 am 30 grams of carb per unit; 10:30am to midnight 24 grams of carb per unit. Prior to using the pump I was on multiple daily injections of Novolog (sliding scale for dosage, usually 2 to 4 units for a typical meal)) and one shot of Lantus, 14 units in the morning. Have you calculated exactly how many carbs you are eating per day? That might be the culprit in your higher BG's and lowering your carb intake might help…it worked for me. Diabetes is such an individual disease. We all have to determine (with our doctor's help) what exactly works for us, tailoring it for our height, weight, activity level, age, metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Best of luck to you!

Hi! My diabetic specialist gave me the expert meter and the carbs and cals book- he told me I could eat whatever I want provided I count the carbs- therefore he said it doesn't matter how many injections of novo rapid I take. That was basically what I was told! I have never been guided on different ratios etc or that I should only be taking a certain amount of carbs a day? I think the doc perhaps doesn't use this practice very often? I'm just very confused and I know I am on the path to nowhere at the min- which gets me down as I have a 2 year old who I want to be healthy for! :(

I converted to a low-carb approach to my diabetes after reading Dr Richard Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution" in the early 2000's. I developed diabetes in 1976 and had never heard/been told of a low-carb approach prior to reading this book…(a friend gave me her copy and urged me to read it.) Dr Bernstein is a diabetic himself and actually returned to school to get his medical degree in order to gain credence in the medical community for his approach. IMHO, low carb is definitely the way to go, despite what many "experts" may claim to the contrary. As diabetics, we need to determine what works best for us, individually…an extra challenge for you raising your 2-year-old, which, in itself, is a full-time job. Dr,. Bernstein is very encouraging. Unfortunately, for me, I found that such a heavily restricted diet was more than I could cope with. He does mention that as well. The fact that he is 79, has lived with diabetes for 67 years and is still going strong speaks volumes for his approach. I'd highly recommend his approach. David Mendoza follows Dr. Bernstein and has been very successful.

I agree that Dr Bernstein's No-carb approach is a bit extreme and very difficult to adhere to. But, reading his book made me aware of the role carbs play in my controlling (or not) my diabetes and led me to severely cut back on my carb intake with good results. Awareness of my own daily carb intake and taking steps to cut back made all the difference for me.

A while back, I started eating an apple with all natural peanut butter for lunch each day. I use a scale to weigh the apple and my scale calculates the grams of carb in that apple. (..or in any other food that I care to weigh as long as I put in the proper food code provided in the booklet that came with the scale.) Dr Bernsteins book was an inspiration for me but I'm more lax in my approach to carbs than he advocates. The key for me was the awareness and the recognition that elimination of many of those carbs results in better BG's. While I eat apples and pears and berries, I avoid grapes, citrus, pineapple, bananas, mangoes…

I am not sure why the limits on carbs either, but if everyone (non diabetics too) would eat just the right about of daily carbs then the they would all be healthier.

Welcome to the carb counting club.It's overwhelming at first but eventually you get there.Eating out is the worst of it as portions are usually ten times the legal limit (so to speak).I find dinners way easy just protein,starch and a veg as long as you use the smaller plate rule portions kind of come out properly.I use dixies 8 1/2 inch paper plates or I have the large square salad plates.It just seems to always make the right amount of carbs(unless you use five pounds of gravy on everything ha,ha).Good luck and God bless.

When I know I'll be eating out and we're going to one of the chain restaurants, I download the nutrition values for their menu items. Most of the chains have this available online, although, they don't have the same info in the individual restaurant facilities.(?!?) I've been able to check Red Lobster, Applebees, Chili's, and Ruby Tuesday. I started doing this after having dinner at Applebees, ordered and ate their Grilled Shrimp and Spinach salad (which sounded like a safe, low-carb entree) and after getting home and checking their site, discovered that it had around 60 or 70 grams of carb…40 of it in the dressing!!!! Since I try to limit my carbs to no more than 120 grams per day, this was way too high…live and learn!

I am a carb counter for 30+ yrs. I would keep my carbs down to 60 a day to lose weight and it worked. When I was prediagnosed with this condition I noticed that the less carbs I had that my BS went up so I started to have more carbs. Went up to 100 to 125 a day and my BS reading stayed between 95 and 120 depending what type of carbs I had. It is a p i a but you have to work at it and soon it will get easier when you go out to eat. Also, the size of the plate does matter. I have noticed that when I use a bowl bigger than a salad dish I load it up. So good luck

I am type 1, but I guess things can be a little differnt for type 2's, so maybe that's why the information you are getting may seem conflicting.
Do you need to limit carbs for "carb counting" to work ? Not as far as I know. But just like non-diabetics if you don't use the carbs up[ (exercise or other activity) then they get converted in to not so good things.

Hi Ironore, I am wondering since I've only been at this for a little over a year now when I try to eat anything I want even with insulin adjustment it seems to mess with my fasting BG reading the next morning. Does this happen to you? I am a T1! Thanks!

From whzt I have read it does help. Carbs somehow produce sugars which goes into the blood stream but that does not mean to eliminate them. Their are different carbs. Some have sugars that go through your system with out any problems and there are others that, I think they call them complex carbs like bread pasta etc,, can be a problem. When I go to the mall, I go into the book store and read up on them and other things dealing with this condition. I am not an expert so I suggest you ask a dietition that deals with diabetes. I was always brought up that I wasn't allowed one sweet - I wasn't allowed anything that had obvious sugar in it- which was basically impossible!!! It's only the last few months I heard of carb counting- can u believe I never knew anything about it! My hba1c is sitting at 12mmol/l which is extremely high!! I also suffer from gastroperesis - anyone else suffer this? X

Hi Amy! I was reading your post and something that you said about gastroperesis stood out to me. I googled it to see exactly what it is and it sounds like something I'm experiencing myself. I'm going to bring it to my doctors attention. I also have a very hard time regulating my blood sugars…I tend to be on the high side also and struggle to keep my A1C down. I feel for you and I know the frustrations all to well. I would really like to here more about this gastroperesis and what your symptoms were when you were diagnosed.

Hi… Oh I really feel for u if u r having the same problems I have! :( I had a few symptoms which led to my doc getting all sorts of tests done. i had a gastric emptying study done an a load of ultrasounds as well as a camera test done. My symptoms were (and unfortunately a lot of the time still are) - as soon as I would eat anything along with feeling full I also felt a sick feeling all the time!! My stomach would be so bloated and I also felt like I needed to go to the toilet all the time! The worst symptom was feeling a sick feeling constantly! My tests came back and confirmed I had gastroperesis and I am now on a tablet called metroclopromide up to 3 times a day. It has gave me some relief but hasn't stopped the symptoms completely! I hope this helps? Apparently it can be very common in people who have had diabetes more than 10 years as it is nerve damage to the digestive system which can be caused my erratic sugars. Oh- another symptom I struggled with was my sugars would be high then go low straight away. This is because my digestive system isn't working properly and then when I eventually could go to the toilet my body was telling me I needed food therefore causing my sugars to drop- strange I know!! Please let me know if this is similar to how u r feeling! Xx

Hi there! I feel some of these same things. Mainly the bloating and the sick part are similar symtoms. I will have to talk to my doctor about it…thank you so much! I feel your frustrations with high blood sugars. I've had so many medication changes over the years and have even tried an insulin pump. I became a type 1 diabetic 7 years ago after being on a medication for endometriosis that destroyed my pancreatic function. So I haven't been diabetic as long as most people are by my age, therefor I feel like I'm still trying to get the hang of things. My high blood sugars have been an issue more over the past 3 years. Now I'm finding it hard to keep my weight down also and I feel fatigued most of the time, which doesn't help the motivation factor at all. I have realized that with diabetes that each day brings different blood sugar numbers, moods, and feelings. When I have a few days of normal blood sugar levels…I feel like "hey, I got this thing down". Then I go weeks with higher blood sugars and I start to feel like I'm never going to be able to efficiently manage my diabetes. I don't know if this is at all how you're feeling…and I don't mean to be a downer. I'm just a little on the frustrated side being that I'm running high again the last few weeks. Hi well I have only been a T1 for a little over a year now, I am 49 years old. It has been really hard lately, although I find like I have it down packed I am now in the pre menopause phase, so my blood sugar levels are sometimes all over the place along with my moods! I also get tired, especially if I am running high, am anemic, vitamin D deficient, and have hypothyroid. I also have stomach problems, not sure what's going on, but dealing with some issues, not as bad as yours! Best of luck and don't give up, it's a hard life, but always worth fighting for!

I like what James said … Cause it's what I thought … Before upping or lowering your dosages talk to your doctor etc … I'm a bit surprised u haven't heard much about counting carbs … I guess things r a bit different in Ireland … Oh biggest reason for counting carbs is that they turn into sugar … Diabetics can have sugar it's all about the amounts …
