Has anyone heard of powdered insulin? I found this article in a Health Digest magazine and was curious to know why I hadn't heard about it before. You can read about the article in News and Articles.

Exubera was an inhaled insulin that I think was a powder. It was on sale in mid 2006 and pulled early this year. It had several problems with it, dosing was not easy, you needed this pretty big bong like contraption to take it and there was always a massive unknown with it regarding tumors in the lungs. i think there may be one company still trying to develop it further but most shelved their research on it.

There are other insulin devices being trialed or developed right now, pills, patches and oral sprays. Some are in use in other countries but we'll see how well they do and what will happen in the future. I think they will all hove some sort of dosing problem both in terms of getting the correct number of units as well as the variance in speed it will be absorbed, but it may not be a huge issue.
