Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and approximately 20 million Americans have diabetes with an estimated 20.9 percent of the senior population age 60 and older being affected.
Millions of people have diabetes and do not know it. Left undiagnosed, diabetes can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, leg and foot amputations, and death related to pneumonia and flu.
Scientific evidence now shows that early detection and treatment of diabetes with diet, physical activity, and new medicines can prevent or delay much of the illness and complications associated with diabetes.
