I'm trying to find new ways to help motivate me to get my type 2 under control. I've taken my health for granted and need to do better. I'm in hopes this will be the year I take charge of my health.

Thank you, Joyce. I appreciate the time you took to write to me. I want all that life has to offer and I plan on taking care of myself. I have a lot to learn. I'm a slow learner, but I will take it one step at a time. Thank you!!!

Well, neuropathy, loss of limps, blindness, kidney failure, death come to mind……
I think that would be enough, it was for my and my watching granddaughters grow-up…

I feel I'm in the same boat as temperance…I'm horrible at this, and while my a1c has come down since diagnosis, it's not THAT low yet, and my numbers are still always high (200/300's). When it gets too far under 200 I actually start to feel like hell. I look at your list of reasons, and while I know that they are definitely valid possibilities (and likelihoods if I straighten my sh1t out), it just seems so far fetched that such could happen. I know it's not far fetched…I guess it hasn't really settled yet. Please, temperance, do share any motivation…I need it.

Take this oppurtunity to look at all the things you have yet to accomplish and want to - realistic or not. If you would have asked me when I was first diagnosed 5+ years ago if I thought I'd snorkel a crater off Maui, I'd have laughed so hard I would have probably wet myself (or had a heart attack from the stress). Temperance, the New Year brings many changes for a lot of people. Turning over a new leaf, isn't always easy. The fact of the matter is you know that you have to get your T2 under control. All the motivation in the world isn't going to help you unless you are willing to make the changes you need to make to gain control.

Start with tasks you can do that are self motivating. Take a 20 minute walk, pay attention to what you are eating and use a food journal to help you monitor what you are eating. Track your test results in a log book. Write down all the questions you have for your doctor and take them to your doctor. Once you begin to get yourself back on track it will become routine.

I am a self motivator and self supporter. I have a support system but rarely use it. I know I can do this with hard work, determination and perseverance. This is my diaereses, not my sisters, my friends or my family's. I am responsible for it and I won't make anyone else responsible. I refuse to depend on anyone to tell me to take my meds, or test or to eat properly. I don't want them to become my crutch. I don't want to disrupt their lives to help me take care of mine. I have diabetes, diabetes does not have me.

Life is short and if you want to live a fruitful life, you have to get up, get out and get active and start taking care of yourself. Diabetes can cause blindness, cause you to lose limbs and disrupt your health in ways that you don't want to happen. Control your diabetes, don't let it control you. Choose to live your life, have fun and do or be all that you want. I know you can do this, you simply have to want to do it. Don't wait for motivation from others, you never know when it will come, if it will come and who it may come from. Waiting for motivation is delaying taking care of yourself. Good luck and take care.

Very well spoken Joyce and congratulations Temperance for having the courage to take better care of your health. You can do it. I have also chosen this year to focus on better health for myself
