Does anyone know exactly what it is and how they happen? Is there a way to tell if you have been in one?

If you do some research (look at Mayo Clinic site), you'll see that diabetic comas (state of unconsciousness) can be the result of high or low blood sugar. The symptoms you would first see are those associated with either -

If your blood sugar level is too high, you may experience:

Increased thirst
Frequent urination
Dry mouth
Shortness of breath

If your blood sugar level is too low, you may feel:

Shaky or nervous

Altho they can be fatal, they are usually not and can be controlled by controlling your diabetes properly.

After the symptoms of LOW BLOOD sugar, what if you go unconcious? Into a coma; how long before it is fatal?

I went into a diabetic coma in May and still do not have a lot of information. My doctor's just told me that my sugar had gone too high and that as a response my body had gone into a healing sleep to try and lower the blood glucose. I was asleep for two days and was alone when it happened so I do not know what happened while I was asleep. I do know that when I woke up my blood sugar was over 400 so it makes sense that if it was higher than that my body had to do something to correct it. The only advice that I got was to check my sugars more often and to be aware of syptoms, agitation and sleepiness. Not much help I'm afraid. Being from a small community I wish that I had other options as far as Doctor's as I feel that I did not receive as much help and advice as I needed. Thankfully I came out of the coma on my own but what if I had not? I also would like more information on this but nobody really seems to know a lot.
