Has anyone had a colonoscopy? I need to schedule one and I want to know everything to expect. I know the prep the night before is awful but what about the test itself. Awake or not. Good or bad I want to know. I thank you in advance for replies.

Tell them that you are allergic to the stuff that they usually give someone to drink before it. Ask them for the new pills called Omni-Prep. If you get these instead of the drink stuff, it will be 100 times better. I promise. Mkae them give you the pills or rather a prescription for them. The cost is well worth it.

I had one about 5 years ago. I was awake during the procedure but it didn't hurt & I don't remember too much. I do remember the dr. wanted me awake so he could ask me questions & wanted me to breathe a certain way at different times. I have to stay overnight in the hospital though. The only reason is because I have sleep apnea & narcolepsy & the sedatives they gave me made me go asleep & not wake up until the next day. That is just me though & they were prepared for that. If you happen to have a sleep disorer be sure to remind your dr. They sometimes want you to bring your CPAP machine with you.

So those of you that were semi awake, there was no pain or ill feeling during it. I have a bad reaction to anathesia so I was concerned. What if they find a problem or polyps, then what. does anyone know? I have been having some stomach problems lately that is why doctor suggested it, plus I am 51.

If there is a polyp, they just snip it out and do a biopsy. Generally they're not a problem. You don't feel a thing during the procedure or afterward. At least that was my experience, and I did have one removed.

I have had several procedures done on me. I was dianosed with colitis at age 3. Now I have ulcerative colitis with 29 bleeding ulcers and a section of my colon thet they may have to remove on 12/08/08 when I go for onther colonosopy. I am partially awake during most of the procedures, however it doesn't hurt no complications thus far.

I had one 4 years ago. It was not at all as bad as I thought it would be. I fell asleep and then it was over. Cara

I had a colonoscopy a couple a years ago and had no problem. The prep wasn't bad at all. I was out during the procedure and there were no after effects or problems afterwards. Nothing to be afraid of.

There was nothing to it when I had one a couple of years ago. Even the prep the night before was not as bad as I had anticipated. It has been much improved over the years. They give you something to put you in a "don't give a hoot" stage while doing the procedure, then roll you back and allow you time to come to and be able to feel well enough to leave. They tell you to expect a little cramping, but I never experienced any. I woke up rapidly and felt just fine. Really a very simple procedure these days. The worst part is not being able to eat until afterward. Go ahead and make the appointment. It needs to be done, and you need not be afraid of doing it at all.

I had one 5 years ago and you're right about the prep but actually it's not that bad. I was awake during the procedure but don't remember anything. They gave me a drug that they refer to as the twilight drug, not sure of the name so you are awake and can talk to the doctor but you don't remember any of it. I hope they do that for everyone.
