Had several lows today … @ least what I would call lows … @ work I went down to 78 , that was 2 hours after lunch … I had a serving of applesauce to get me up a little it had 15 carbs … Later @ home I checked and was down to 68 … Had orange juice to bring it up , 15 minutes later I was @ 134 , orange juice really worked fast … Feeling sick right now … I'm @ 73 … Not hungry @ all might have some apple sauce again and get ready to call it a night really starting to feel sick … I can't tell if I'm coming down with something or if its the low blood sugars making me yucky …

Jigsaw , I'm just taking insulin now … ( Novolog ) … Oh and most if these lows were coming @ times when I was going to eat , so after correcting , I would more carbs but protein too … My trainer had asked what I eat @ work and I told her she told me u having those carbs as a snack on your break in the morning is alright but she advised me to have protein with it …

I just started taking Humalog today, which is also a fast acting insulin. I've been monitoring my glucose levels very closely to make sure that I avoid lows. I'll let you know how it works out.

the protein is to support your BG so you don't get on the BG "Roller Coaster" With carbs only there is a sharp rise, with a corresponding sharp drop off. Once a low is corrected, then take the protein to give you a long lasting energy source.

James took the words right out of my mouth, he's so smart and right. Youre correcting your lows, but once you get a BG reading you're comfortable with have a protein snack to keep you on track, otherwise you will drop again! I have some days where I just drop especially if I get too busy carry walnuts and that helps along with just slices of apples! Good luck!

Have you tested your reaction to that combination as far as your body's Blood glucose reaction to those together?

Follow the instructions here ~ http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/14... and then you can get difinitive answer to how "healthy" that combo would be for you. My guess is that it would not be safe (in general) for PWDs because it is a pairing of a medium high glycemic index food with a higher GI food. My guess it would be close to the BG levels from a carmel apple

Lows can definitely make you feel terrible ! I have only had 2 or three instances of lows in 18 years, but I was prepared to counter them with some fast acting carbs. Since lows can be dangerous, it's best to be prepared with some fast acting carbs, just in case.
Just curious, what medication if any are you taking ?

jayabee52 2012-12-22 06:36:09 -0600 Report

that is great as often ppl who have lows complain they feel really crappy for about a day after.

One thing I note you are doing is NOT eating protein once your BG gets back into the normal range. The fast acting carbs have a sharp rise and a sharp drop off. You could use a support under the sharp rise so you don't get on the BG roller coaster.
