I have a ? i dont take care of my diabetes and i think its cause of my horrible attitude and my mum gave up trying to stick on me about it which is good and bad if i were to see a shrink could they help me or do you think if i changed my attitude i would take care of it and any tips on how to change your attitude

control and attitude are both special links to taking care of urself!! like many teens with t1 it sometimes it takes something extreme to happen so u eventualy cop on and start to take care of yourself! i was 16 when i was dx and i wanted to deny my diabetes so much i ate what i wanted, tested once every two weeks and laughed at doctors when they tried to explain the dangers i would get into if i continued down this path!! and being admitted into icu for a week with dka finially woke me up!! please dont let it get too far before u realise life doesnt have to be a constant struggle with this condition. Seeking professional help in altering your attitude may help your control a great deal. Speaking about ur fears, what annoys and frustrates, upsets and hurts you about this condition may help you. Im guessing your only young and trust me i know its hard but try and see life beyond diabetes!! Best of luck!!

If you can't do it for yourself then do it for those you love and who love you. Or maybe you just need someone to slap you upside your head and say "Time to get your big boy/girl drawers on and deal with it!"

I was a non-compliant diabetic…until I ended up in the ER 3 months ago. There isn't a carb out there that's worth going through the terror of knowing you might die…and hoping that your body recovers a bit. THAT was my motivator. I was able to bake tons of cookies this week (12 dozen last night!) and not so much as taste the batter.

I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. I am also grateful that I have an "ahead of me" to do that work. I haven't had blood work done yet (I'm thinking tomorrow of going for it (hate the 12 hour fast!) yet I know that I will be seeing an improvement.

You do have to care more about your own inner self than the signals your brain gives your stomach.

junk food aint my problem aswell my problem is haveing a tiny dam bite of chicken or a tiny bite of pizza or a tiny bit of a strumbolie i like to eat a lot and wth do you mean non compliant diabetic

I have only one question I keep in my heart when ever I feel bad or "whoa is me" attitude. Why does your disease love your body more than you do?

There are several common reasons why people don't take care of their diabetes, but most can be managed with some attitude adjustments.

I find it easiest to change my attitude when I know what my present attitude is going to cost me. When I see what I can lose (my health, happiness, life), I am motivated to change so I don't lose it. Also, when I see something I want (healthy and happiness), and know my attitude will keep me from getting it, I will do what I have to do to make those changes.

Only you know what motivates you … what you want enough to open your mind to change. Change is hard. Change is painful. Change is a challening. Do you like to win? Then make the changes you need to make to win the battle with diabetes. Make a game out of it, overcome the anger, fear, or denial that is keeping you from managing your diabetes so you can have a happy, successful life and have fun, go to college, travel, find someone to love, and be happy!

If you can't do this by yourself, yes, a psychologist can help you, probably more than a psychiatrist could because you will probably be working on lifestyle changes rather than serious psychiatric disorders.

i have depression and axiety and thoughts of suicide aswell do you still think i should see a psychologist would that work or since i have depression and axiety and thoughts of suicide i should see a psychiatrist or a theripist i have no clue which one to see cause im stupid and i dont think a shrink at all will work which worrys me cause from what ppl tell me online and what i read a shrink only works if you have a great attitude and i dont think ill ever get motivation no matter what cause im always sad and mad and from my understanding when your sad and mad its nearly impossible to get motivated

Hi, again, Anonymous. I've been offline with computer problems and sorry I missed your response.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialized in mental illness. A psychologist is a trained therapist who can also treat mental illness, but usually looks at it more from a lifestyle perspective — you know, what's happening in your life right now and how it affects the choices you make. In most states in the US, they can also prescribe medications, if needed, or work with a doctor who will.

Either one could help you with depression, anxiety, and suicidality as both professions are trained to do so. I think many people find a psychologist easier to talk to because they are less medically oriented. You sound like you may feel that way too.

As for sad and mad feelings, yes, that can get in your way of having a good life that you enjoy and feel happy about. A professional would help you sort out what you are mad/sad about (and its not always what you think it is). Together you would talk about what you can change about those issues, and together you would make a plan so that you can made the changes that would help you be happier with your life and your choices.

No, you don't need a great attitude, in fact most people who come in don't have one. They are hurting and sad and depressed just like you. It doesn't usually make for a great attitude. What you need is to be willing to explore what your life is about, what can change, and how you will do it. ONLY YOU can actually make it happen.

There are A LOT of GOOD reasons to manage your diabetes. I don't know if you're male or female and if you have kids or hope to have kids (most of us want to or actually have sons or daughters) I know that when I was perhaps at the lowest point in my life I was kept from taking the "easy way out" because of its effect upon them.

My kidneys are almost at the point where I will need to go on hemo dialysis.
I have diabetes related neuropathy My arms tingle from my elbows to fingertips and burn from my knees to toes. Every step I take my feet BURN like fire! Very draining!

I also have stomach problems and my sex organs don't work well either. You could go to my profile and see all of my "medical challenges". MOST of them are due to me NOT taking care of myself when first diagnosed.

Regarding your attitude, see if you can befriend Dr Gary ~ http://www.diabeticconnect.com/users/265624-d... He is a PhD who counsels chronically ill patients from all diagnoses. He might well be able to point you in a better direction on how to change your attitude.

On and off I would and I wouldn't take care of myself … Finally after hearing some of the negatives that had begun to occur due to diabetes I finally got myself to do the things I needed to do … Do u want to go blind ??? Do u want your legs amputated ??? Would u like to lose the function of your kidneys ??? All of these things r highly possible if u do not take care if diabetes … If u do not want these things to occur then love yourself and one day at a time try to make the right choices … I know it's hard , I still have to fight the urges to eat the wrong foods and lots of good when I eat … I wanna live be as healthy as I can … I got a 12 year old son and a 5 year old son … I want to see them grow up and see them have families etc … I want to live !!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope u want to live to !!!!!!!!!! Take care of yourself one day at a time …
