Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)...A Never Again Experience!
What a day!
I had to have a tooth extracted today and the dentist used Nitrous Oxide, also known as "Laughing Gas"…it was no laughing matter for me, not at all!
I am not going into details concerning the procedure, but i must say this, I did not like the feeling, what I did not like was the feeling of not being in control of my semse of being, also my blood glucose level rose pretty high (200+) possibly due to stress.
Has anyone else ever experienced this?
All I can say is this, some things you do only once (if ever) in life, and this has been my one moment, next time (if there is ever one) I will just go back to being injected with a local anesthetic.
So much for trying to get away from needles and injections!

sorry you had that experience. fortunately in all of my adult life, I have not needed it for anything, all I have needed done is old cavities refilled, but when I was a child, I went to a children's dentist who used that , they put it over my nose and said smell the peppermint or whatever, and it always made me feel light headed, which I really hate. I feel that way now when my blood sugars go up or down too fast, even within normal range, and it is a feeling that always makes me nervous, I can't stand not feeling in control. I am worried about the next time I have to have any dental work and what they will do and how I will feel, since I haven't had to have any done since diagnosis. Maybe next time, there is something else they can do besides that? tell them your BS went too high , I am sure there must be something that is better for us diabetics.
I understand your feelingsof nervousness exactly.
I just didn't like the feeling of not being in control of myself, so next time i will just take the needle instead, i will definitelly inform them that my blood glucose level rose rather quickly at my next dentak appointment.
Just seeing this, hope your pain will go away soon. I had one pulled a few weeks ago and it took a week to feel OK but I had the bad tooth for almost a year before getting it pulled. I was a big chicken!
Please find another dentist. There r to many out there today who focus on making sure your visit is painless and relaxing. Mine uses N. O. for relaxing patients for the novicane injections, not for pain as you found out does little to mask pain. Doesnt seem right peps going through that with todays advancement in denistry. My childhood dentist didnt give novicane before drilling out my cavities and would shove toliet paper down my throat if i cried. When he did give me needle for tooth extraction the needle went all the way through into my nose. When i became an adult i refused to go to any dentist i was so tramatized and scared. That is till i was forced. The place i choose babied me& gauranteed me other then the mild pinch feeling of injections i would feel nothing. They have a lady who does nothing but injections and she explained to me if ever more then a pinching feeling means the injector not doing it correctly and i should stop them and ask for someone else. I was amazed how painless the injections she did were, even in the top front where my childhood dentist went into my nose. my dentist says if i ever feel any pain even mild all i have to do is raise my hand and she'll stop. Feeling any pain means your not fully numb yet and gives alittle more novicane and waits at least another 15-20 minutes before beginning again. Were all different and some people like myself need more time for the novicane to fully take affect. If your dentist doesnt carter to your needs for a relaxing painless experience there r plenty out there who well. Its extremely important to my dentist that none of her patients r scared to come in for their visits. Look in the phone book and you should see ads advertising pain free dentistry.Sry so long but it bothers me so much dentists r still putting their patients through this so they can make a few more bucks.
your childhood dentist sounds like my chidhood dentist. (he didn't do the TP to me though)
wonder if they were treated that way by their dentists. worst part is being a young chuld thought that was normal
The N.O. was supposed to be for relaxing me, but it didn't, actually neither the novicaine nor the N.O. did what they were supposed to do, maybe it was me but the experience is one that i will not experience again, i would rather have the needle in my mouth any day!
Glad to hear that you are ok, mine wasn't bad, it was pulled to make it easier for a set of partials to be fitted once they were made, they thought that the tooth might move a little in the future causing the partial to not fit as well as it should due to the results of my bone loss surgery.
I wish that it were a bad tooth, then i would have been happy to see it go and the pain suffered having it removed would have been worth it!
Did you feel the pain ??????????????
if not it worked
Some times in life you got to let go
I have gone thru it three times and I like it ,Im very hard to numb so it is the next bwst way to go .Being put out is #1 for me
Best wishes
Harlen
Actually Harlen, I did feel the pain, the student doctors did not administer the proper dosage based on my height and weight (6'2" - 224lbs) according to their professor.
Next time i will just take the injection and be happy, I agreee about letting go in life and i did let go, one very LOUD yell when the dentist finally pulled my tooth out…lol.
Best wishes my friend,
Mays
Oh, that is bad...the whole point is to not feel the pain of it. Then it certainly was not worth the "trip"
Certainly mot!
The pain was immense but i had no choice but to sit it out, pain and all!
There is only one type of gas that seems to make people laugh and or run for cover ! I'll skip the details, but it's not Nitrous Oxide ! My wife loves it, but me, I'll stick with a local anesthetic also. Needles are an acceptable alternative for me.
Funny!
No need to go into any details…lol!
I'am so glad that you are doing much better Mays course I don't like shots in my mouth either but we do what we have to do.
Alan
I agree Alan, we do what we must (never again with NOx) although i don't like the shots, i'll take them from this point on!
Seems like I have had everytooth in my mouth worked on and I love that gas. It makes you feel so good. That is the only thing I look forward to going to the dentist for:)
That's funny, maybe i just had a panick attack, but i didn't like the feeling at all!
I’ve had way too much dental work done and hate getting shots in my mouth. Anywhere else, no problem. I’ve opted for NOX a few times and really kind of liked the feeling as long as someone was available to steer me around. Trouble was it kind of removes those “tactful” filters and I’ve said some pretty stupid stuff while under the influence. Luckily me and the tech were familiar with each other and she understood.
Hope you’re healing well, I feel for you.
LOL, I would have loved to have been there to hear all you said :), i don't know you but would have given you the hardest time of your life after!!! rofl
Luckily, I can't remember most of it, and the techs never told me much except "it happens to everyone". Still has me thinking just what i said.
Thanks Nick, "tactful filters" huh, lol…i can only imagine!
It truly was an experience!
You, not being tactful? LOL....yes it is a strange feeling to be without control. It has been too long since I had my wisdom teeth pulled, and I don't remember much but a daze. Recently though, I have taken hydrocodne for pain and one of those puts me in a "happy" place, so I only take it before going to bed. I get that "beyond relaxed" feeling about an hour after taking it and am glad that only my dreams have to deal with the state I am in.
I am surprised it raised your numbers, though the stress of having any surgery done can get our numbers in a tizzy. I hope that you are doing better now.
Just one gets you happy Gabby? You’d sure be a cheap date. With my recent spine issues I was on one every 4 hours, but yeah, it does put one in a fog alright. The additional anti-inflamatories did push me over the edge into stupidville, so I only took those at bedtime. Some of those dreams weren’t too bad, but some did cause a little apprehension about shutting my eyes at night.
Yeah, I am a drug and drink wimp. It doesn't take much to take care of me, for which I am grateful. Thus I do hard meds and white Russians at home. (boy does that sound bad)LOL. I have vivid dreams on hydrocodone and I remember them very often. They can be a form of family entertainment as my step daughter has a couple of dream interpretation books.
I may have to consult your stepdaughter. In one dream I sold off my ex in india and was disappointed I didn't get more. I think I watched too many episodes of Storage Wars that night.
YEP!! As long as you got a camel or some goats, you were okay. But only blonds bring that price, brunettes, not so much. I only know because I had a college roommate who was offered several goats for her hand while she was traveling the Middle East.
There you go, she was a brunette. Got 10,000 rupees (about $200)
Man, I would have gone for the goats.
I was traveling New Delhi to Bombay, needed the cash for the train. Still don't understand how I ended up in india with my ex.
Hehe
LOL.
Not good at all Mays… Hope your OK now…
Why thank you!
I am doingvery very well imdeed, i just wont do that ever again!
No you poor thing… Hugs
Hugs.
Can't say that I have experienced NOx gas, Mays Mine was always by injection. Glad you survived your little trip into fantasy land!
Survive I did James, I will take an injection any day over NOx.
Some trips are not worth taking unless you are in complete control of them, including those trips into " fantasy" land…lol.
Just out of curiousity…have you ever used N.O. before? If not, did they even tell you what side effects you might have? I have never used it before, guess I wasn't freaked out enough by needles, after all it is only a pinch-a strong pinch to be sure but still only a pinch :). I once had to be injected with something to get my heart valves back in sync and it was the worst feeling ever but the doctor told me I HAD to relax or I could make things worse :(. I'm not good with technical terms but the valve that pumps the blood out of my heart was pumping the blood out faster than the valve that pumps the blood into my heart. It happens only occasionally and usually straightens itself out except on this one occasion-trip to the ER. That was many years ago but back to the N.O., I often wondered what it would be like but I guess because I could stand the needles it was never an option. Pain is never fun but almost always temporary :). Glad you're over the worst.
I haven't Mays, but it hope your eelin better.. Hugs
Ann, Thank you for your concern, i was feeling better the moment they tuened off the gas..lol.
Hugs.
