How you overcame your greatest diabetic challenge

Along our journey with diabetes, we all have met with a challenge that seemed impossible to master. Could you share your greatest challenge and how you overcame it to achieve better management of the disease?

Corn. Not being able to eat corn or most corn products has been hard. I LOVE corn almost anyway it comes. It spikes me no matter how small a portion I eat and if you look at ingredients, it's in EVERYTHING. I cut most of it out 100%. Rarely do popcorn anymore and I try hard to find ways to cull it from my pantry foods.

I've had a high and ate pickles recommended by a DC friend I had a low where I couldn't move but finally managed to get to the kitchen and drank a half ginger ale and managed to come back enough to eat. Both scared me but I'm learning.

I really didn't have to much of an issue with it I have always eaten healthy all my life the thing is I have metabolic syndrome and I have had since I was 17 I have always been a healthy weight and the Endos throughout my life ( I moved a lot ) had not been able to figure out why …I might have finally gotten lucky with my new one :) I might have adrenal gland failure :) ( happy about finally having a diagnosis ) so now I am on prednisone regiment and no carbs and for the first time in my life I feel "good" yeah

My biggest challenge as a diabetic ??? To live my life as a diabetic … For years I said ____ it I'm just gonna eat what I want when I want , to hell with the meds too … Yes I just lived like I had no illness … Finally after years of being diabetic and suffering complications from diabetes I'm taking this affliction seriously … Never to late to do so … That was my biggest challenge to take DIABETES seriously !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to give up Dr Pepper and I was very upset about that, but i drank diet pop for awhile and loved it but not to be healthier I don't even drink diet pop.

I accepted the fact that I am a diabetic and can no longer eat my favorite snack foods. After my 24hr period of denial, I dove right in with both feet. After the third month management of my diabetes was routine. Today being diabetes is not the main focus of my life. I have more important and fun things to do then to concern myself with being diabetic. Keeps me happy and happiness is important in day to day life.

I was diagnosed type 1 when younger, so no choice but to make changes due to my insulin usage. Thankfully, my family was and is here to support me because doing it alone would be terrible.

Shifting my paradigm from low fat to low carb took a couple months.

Seeing myself as a person with a chronic illness has also been a challenge. I spent so long thinking of myself as healthy, even if I was not.

regular pepsi…before diabetes i drank soda almost everyday…i broke the habit by finding other things to drink…i started drinking sugar free koolaid to get the "sweet" fix…later switched to tea…i still struggle with the urge to drink a Baja Blast at Taco Bell but i know if i do i will feel bad so i get my stuff to go…the greatest challenge lately has been eating healthy while rehabbing from a stroke. "cup a noodle soup" is easier to microwave than trying to open salad mix, chop veggies or open cans…but i try to do a little more everyday :)
