Blood sugar levels

Anyone here having different readings for their blood sugar levels using 2 different meters? I just recently got the new BAYER Contour USB meter but decided to see if there were a difference of the blood level readings against my old ONE -Touch meter. I was surprised to see quite a different number range between the two.

Each meter will either be higher or lower from one another during each testing. Neither one is always higher or lower than the other meter.( I hope that made sense.)

I plan on talking with my diabetic doctor when I see him next but because he is not out in my area for 4 to 6 weeks at a time, I was hoping to find someone else who may have had this same situation using different brand name meters when checking blood sugar levels.

Because of the large amount of difference between the two, I have got to where I now check my blood sugars with both meters to see how much they differ during each testing.

I am sorry. I meant to get back to you. After reading about you problem. I went out the next day. Got a new meter, tried both meters for a week. I had the same problem - just when they seem to to be the same readings. The next day were not. Sorry, I was hopping to have better news for you.

I recently found out that the local hospital just north of our town has diabetic support group meetings every 3rd. Wednesday of the month. Plan on signing up to join it and ask people there if they have had the same problem. I'll let you and everyone know once I hear what they have to say. Hope you and everyone here has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

wow, makes me wonder. I use a One Touch ultra mini, which I got from my doc nearly 4 years ago the day I was diagnosed, and also bought another one later, so I'd have two. They are the only ones I have ever tried. Sometimes I have thought of getting another totally different kind and trying this. Let us know what the doctor says when you have talked to him in a few weeks. I am curious to see what everyone else says too, that has tried this.

I'll be sure and keep you and everyone updated on it. Right now, I am keeping a daily log after each test from them both so I can show my doctor when I see him in a few weeks just so he can give me an idea as to why they are so different. Rarely are they ever the same after checking and rarely are they even close to the same numbers after every test. That is why it has me worried so to speak.

Has anybody ever told you that you look like Santa Claus ?

Chairmaker 2012-11-04 16:42:06 -0600 Report

Frosty maybe…but never Santa. Ha! Ha! My wife and I are the town Santa & Mrs. Claus here in Clarksville, MO. and I do have live Lapland Reindeer for the "Wee-Ones" to actually see and pet when they come to see us during Christmas. If you get a chance, check out the town web site. You may even want to come out for a visit someday. www.ClarksvilleMO.US

Can you post some pictures of you and your wife, as Santa and Mrs Claus, when the time comes? I would love to see them. You must have a blast !!!

I'll try and get a few posted on here tonight sometime. However, NOT being computer savvy, I won't promise they do not end up on some site that "Wee-Ones" and such should not be looking at. Ha! Ha!

Thanks Jigsaw. I'll have to try and find those. However, NOT being computer savvy, I am lucky I can find my way back to this page at times.

I am pretty sure that neither of the meters are bad since neither is always lower or higher than the other regardless as to the time I do my testing. Each one varies from test to test. Thanks, I appreciate your response.

there's a discussion from a while ago I looked up on the search function on Diabetic Connect ~

you could search the same by entering a search term (I put in "meter accuracy") and searching for it. You not only get returns from discussions, but also from News sources posted to DC. My search returned 100 discrete returns from all over the site.

Thanks Guy, I really appreciate it. The difference in the 2 meters is really frustrating so to speak. Thanks again

This has been discussed in depth, quite a few times in the past. You can check in previous discussions.
There are a few possibilities taking place here. Meters have a +/- 20% error factor, and therefore are good for getting you a ballpark figure. Of course it is also possible that one of your meters are defective and out of spec. I have used the contour meter for at least two years with success. It averages very close to my lab results and is close enough to my a1c as to be acceptable.
