I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 10 years ago and have been able to control it by diet until 9 months ago. My doctor put me on 500 mg Metformin for 3 months and then increased it to 500 mg 2 times a day. Life has been very stressful the past year and I thought that might be contributing to my sugar problems. When I increased the dosage I find myself experiencing all of the side effects associated with Metformin, and I didn't see any improvement in sugar levels. I discontinued taking the 2nd pill, but I'm still experiencing all of the side affects. I've a call into my doctor to discuss the matter. I'm interested in seeing if others have had the same problem with Metformin. My biggest concern right now is muscle weakness, muscle spasms and excessive shortness of breath. I'm suffering flu like symptoms, abnormal bowels and irritable stomach. It's also mimicing symptoms I had 3 years ago when I was infected with Lyme Disease.

I have been taking Metformin for over a year now 500 mg, 3 times a day and have not had any problems with it and it along with diet changes and exercise have brought my numbers under control.
Sorry I can't be of any help. ;-)

I have been on Metformin for 3 years. I had an upset stomach the first two weeks then my body adjusted to it. However, if you are stressed out this can have an effect on your blood sugar levels and keep you from getting them under control. You won't see improvements unless you reduce your level of stress. Metformin works great for me because I got rid of stress and stressful people and with diet and exercise, my numbers are great.

Yes I've heard other ppl say the same thing. I was at the Dr today and she wanted to put me on the same Med but l told her no way. I haven't heard anything good about it and all ready have problems with my stomach and don't need to have more problems. She then put me on the sliding scale for insulin.
