Hi Guys,

Apologies if it seems a bit rude that I'm only a new to the group and I'm asking for help but I think its for a good cause. I'm at uni I have been concentrating on trying to give something back so I'm looking at the psychological effects of Diabetes.

My current project is looking at patient views about Diabetes care when things go wrong. If anybody doesn't mind could fill please it out as long as you are type 1 and over 18, its at

It may seem like a random uni project but I have actually spoken to some Diabetes Association spokes people from UK and America so hopefully my work will go somewhere in the future.

I'd also like to say, at 23 I have been a Diabetic for 17years and up until a couple of weeks ago was never a member of any forum, but for my project I have joined a couple and in asking others for help, I have learned so much myself. I have no diabetic friends and didn't realise how alone I felt as a diabetic, these communities bridge that gap and I have learnt a lot…so generally, thank you!!!

HI!! it wasnt too long i was doing my dissertation on the social and emotioal components on t1 diabetes and the gaps within society!!! I loved doing it because everyone seems to have different experiences and perspectives however the majority of people came to the same conclusion!! best of luck with your work!! If you want any more info id be happy to share what i found through my research! im from Ireland myself so im not too far form the uk and our health services would be pretty similar!!

Hi Roshy! Its great to hear that there are fellow Diabetics looking into this stuff. It is fascinating to find out all the different perspectives and know what we all agree and disagree about. I would love to know more about your research, are you still looking in to that sort of stuff? I'm having a mad push to get my final 15 study participants at the minute but I'm amazed at how tough it is to access the T1 population!

I actualy finished my research in May. I found it very hard to find suitable participants iswell!! i originally wanted to do a qualitative interview with a specialised diabetic counsellor but after getting in touch will nearly all of them in the country none felt they had enough experience with t1s to contribute to the study. I thought this in itself was interesting, prehaps its because a privatly funded service and not provided by the health system. I went on to interview a diabetes nurse and sher provided an amazing amount of information in relation to community and health support services and social and emotional components. To get a more personal perspective i finially interviewed a t1 and compared her experiences to my own !!! id love to go on and do a masters but for now i need to get out and work!! Last november the diabetes federation were conducting a study on young type ones and their personal experiences and also health care staff so its brilliant to see that the studies are being carried out!! but like yourself i think more people need to come forward and be willing to speak!! its the only way the current health system will change for the better!!! if your carrying out interviews id be more then happy to email answers or skype!! i understand and feel your pain in getting people to share their time for your study!! best of luck with it and let me know all your findings!!!

Your work sounds incredibly interesting, I had so many ideas for research but its hard when you have to choose a topic which can be supported by a member of staff. I'm intrigued to look in to the area and recently looked at trying to get experience with psychologists who work in clinical practice with diabetes patients but there are not many who do! This I find shocking because many other serious conditions offer some emotional support services within each local clinic if not at least regionally, but diabetes have few and far between. Hopefully the current research with young t1s will provethat support is needed and they will increase this service. My current research is just an online questionnaire and so if you could fill that out it would be wonderful. I did interviews as part of a pilot but don't need them anymore but thank you. I will let you know how I get on :)

best of luck Caitlin!!! the area is getting more and more poular, esp when it comes to social support for people with t1 i agree with you that it is shocking that no psychological suport is given within the heath service along with dietitions, nurse specialists and the rest. This opinion was a strong one proven over and over again thoughout my research!!! i have already taken the on line questionaire and wish you the best of luck with you college course!! ; . )

Type 2 here so I don't qualify for your survey,
but wanted to wish you the best of luck with your studies. ;-)

Thank you so much, I fell better having you say that, and feel like you did indeed verify it's validity/safty. I need more then "a go" reply, for it to be taken seriously.

I wanted to take this survey since I'm type 1.

Oh sorry of course no problem. Where is the feedback tab?

Just scroll to the bottom of this page and you will see it in the gray area :)

If that doesn't get you a response, let me know and I will pass this on to John or Jeanette.

not necessarily a bad sign, Caitiln, for two reasons:

#1) the folks here are generally cautious about participating in things like this unless and until the Admins have checked it out and have posted on the discussion that it is OK, but that may take a bit of time. (a lot of stuff has happened over the weekend that they may need to process first)

#2) you were asking for T1s to fill it out, and there are probably many more T2s here (like me).

I almost responded to you much the same as Dietcherry did but noted that you were asking for input from T1s, so I chose not to say anything.

I pray you'll get the OK soon and get a lot of responses then!

Thank you. Looks like its all sorted no so thats great. I know a lot of people may think its cheeky but I hope its a positive thing, and hopefully in the future I can do stuff which covers research for T1 and T2, I would have liked to but I'm limited at the minute.

Thanks for the support =)
