I was diagnosed w/type 2 4 yrs ago & thyroid this past yr. I've had 4 family member have gastric bypass to combat obesity & family inherited diabetis. I have 2 bad knees & find it difficult to extercise. Gained 12 lbs in 3 mths recently & cried all the way home from drs office. Unfortunately they give me no suggestions! Went to a class @ a local hospital & it was so terrible the ppl didnt even stay for the whole class. I'm bored with the same old foods, never was much on eating breakfast, but the cerel & fruit is getting soooo boring!

Howdy Jersey Girl, WELCOME to DiabeticConnect!

I was overweight for the majority of my life. I didn't have the bum knees but I was heading in that direction. I was on insulin and discovered quite by accident that my pancreas was producing enough insulin on its own that IF I ate very carefully I could manage to control my diabetes without resorting to Diabetes meds of any kind.

I managed to come up with a meal plan which I have written up here ~ http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/14...

One of the side benefits (which I hadn't occurred to me when I started this eating plan) was that I lost about 65 lbs, and my clothes were no longer tight on me. In fact I had to have a belt on, and drill extra holes in my belt so that I could get it tight enough to hold up my pants. (I've since gotten new belts and pants).

So for me, this high protein, low carbohydrate meal plan was the ticket to weight loss for me. I didn't focus on the weight, but on control of my Diabetes and the weight loss was just a much desired side-effect.

I pray you'll find this information useful to you in managing your diabetes and in losing weight.

For me, it's my thyroid, which is very high. We are watching that so closely. My Dr. says, that is why I am not loosing weight fast enough. He is trying to get that regulated. I am not a canidate for any surgeries to loose weight. Because of my thyroid. Also if you have slow metabolism, which is basically the same thing, can slow it down to. I am exercising every other day. Because of muscle weakness I can't do it every day. I am still moving. I have to watch what I eat. No extra's right now.. Good luck :)

Living with diabetes is a constant balancing act. What have you tried that hasn't worked? How many carbs do you consume each day? What was your last A1c? More info from you would be helpful in suggesting tips that have worked for us. In my case, it was accurately counting my carbs and reducing my carb intake to no more than 120 grams/day and trying to exercise more.
