Should we believe the media about Actos and bladder cancer?

I was on Actos for close to five years along with metformin and had good results with it, as far as keeping my BGL down. On the down side I had swollen ankles and feet and sudden drops in my BGL that left me running for a candy bar. I spoke to my doctor after reading all the negative reports that were coming out and he agreed it was time I changed meds.
I am currently on One daily shot of insulin (Lantus) and metformin and could not be happier. The swelling in my feet is gone, no sudden drops in my BGL, my energy level increased which led to a more positive out look about my life with diabetes

When I started seeing an Endocrinologist in early March of this year, the first thing he did was take me off Actos and Janumet. Both of which have been pulled in Europe. Also, I started to lose weight; side effects of the 2 were inability to lose weight and increased appetite, so far I’ve lost about 40 lbs. which is the lowest I’ve been in over 4 years….. In my opinion it needs to pull here to… BTW he put me on Victoza
Have wonderful and safe weekend… :)

I posted numerous links from very reliable sources a while back. There were some shoddy tests done in France, but there were some very reliable tests done here in the US. The amount of test persons that got bladder cancer looked pretty scary to me. The FDA ordered warnings to be printed in the directions within the packaging to this effect also.

Actos has connections to a few things such as heart failure as well as bladder cancer. It often lowers levels but adds weight though the retention of water in the body. My mom took it for a short while and the swelling in her legs and feet was so bad her skin was cracking. She stopped Actos and went to insulin. No more swelling, great numbers and lost weight.

I would say do some research and let your own mind be made up on it. A good place to start is or

Yikes!!! Is it still on the market???

jigsaw 2012-07-28 15:30:11 -0500 Report

And many doctors are still prescribing it!

dietcherry 2012-07-28 21:18:35 -0500 Report

Gosh Ive been seeing those law firm commercials for months—I figured the stuff had already been recalled!

jigsaw 2012-07-29 05:07:29 -0500 Report

I've been seeing them too. I also stopped taking Actos quite some time ago and against my doctors suggestion. My endo and his PA feel that the risk of bladder cancer is so small, that for some people the risk is worth it as opposed to having high bg. According to my endo, the tests that were done with Actos had a very small percentage of patients with bladder cancer. He along with many other doctors , feels the risk of cancer is to small to avoid giving prescriptions. He still prescribes Actos.

My doctor and myself had a come to Jesus meeting and I told him I was quitting Actos that I couldnt live with the extra pounds that I would rather be dead. I have always been around 110 and I bloomed up to 155. I felt like a horse. I was not eating and no weight was coming off. Very depressing. I'm very active and only gained to that number when I was pj. Always been a runner and active. I am controling the blood sugar with only mediform Er 500mg 3 times a day. I'm eating and feel so much better. Not depressed about weight.

dietcherry 2012-07-30 09:59:08 -0500 Report

Thats significant weight gain! Im surprised—I thought oral D meds helped the weight come off but I admit I only know what Ive learned here from T2s. I havent heard of mediform—is that similar to metformin? Im glad you feel better!!

mystikfairy61 2012-08-13 16:59:14 -0500 Report

I was on Metformin ER as well but I had such terrible side effects my meds had to be changed. I am now on Glipizide and couldn't be happier. Numbers have come way down, but I haven't had much weight loss, only about 2 1/2 pounds. I don't think glipizide helps with weight loss like Metformin does. I would nevr go on Actos after the things I have heard and read.

dietcherry 2012-08-13 17:41:54 -0500 Report

I know what you mean; I was on Metformin for 4 months cuz my Endo thought I may have developed insulin resistance to synthetic insulin (I am a T1).

My A1c went up while on Met so I am NOT resistant and its a good thing cuz I could barely eat! My appetite still hasnt returned fully and Ive been off it since the end of May :(

I discussed Actos with my Endo at my most recent appt. and he said he never prescribed it for anyone cuz he wasnt fond of the accompanying literature——says alot huh?!!!

The bladder cancer risk kind of tipped the apple cart. Actos is related to Avandia, and I read to many negative things about both medications . I refused Avandia before it was pulled off the market. Most doctors I spoke to (past tense) defended Avandia also.
On the other hand, I will say that Actos did a great job of helping me manage my bg. I was only on a minimal dose for a few months before I stopped taking it.

BP, OWNS the FDA… 95% of FDA "rulings" come down on the side of BP… they have a lobby, they have the Drs hands in their pockets… "We the People" can't buy protection from BP, not even with our own tax dollars. Perhaps we all need to form a legal wing that hires the oldest nastiest attorneys we can find to go after BP in all cases where they're put one over on us! And I do NOT mean British Petroleum!

LOL!! I often have to ask about text language. I don't text and sometimes I get really lost.

jayabee52 2012-07-26 07:55:55 -0500 Report

yes it still is in the USA, I understand France has taken it off the market there.

jayabee52 2012-07-26 09:36:24 -0500 Report

I could hazard a guess but that would be a W.A.G. on my part: "Big Pharma" has influence on the FDA???

dietcherry 2012-07-26 09:47:11 -0500 Report

Maybe the company itself will pull it—Pharma hates to lose money on lawsuits (and admit wrong-doing) even though its quickly replaced by sales of other pills.

Hi! I dont know about all the media hype but Ive read alot and I was on it last fall. I swelled up like a balloon! Couldnt hardly bend my fingers they were so swollen! But I gotta tell you if it wouldnt of been for that I would of kept taking it bc it made my blood sugar numbers almost perfect.

I took Actos for many months. It didn't do a whole lot for my BS, however, I did gain a lot of weight in a short period of time. I am now having major problems with my right Kidney and may end up loosing it. I have had 3 kidney surgeries in the past 16 months. never had any problems with my kidneys until I started taking Actos. Is this a related subject… I do not know. I learned that there were 18 of us who all went to the same Dr. for our diabetes who all were put on Actos. Everyone had gained anywhere from 32 lbs to 65 lbs in a short amount of time. I do know several of the people have had probems with their kidneys and bladder ever since.

I do not know if the Actos Scare is overblown or not. Read this update to the warning from the FDA here ~ —- and then come to your own conclusions.

My dox took me off of Actos because of the scare. Which sux, cause that was the only drug that worked me. Oh well. Maybe it's all for the best. There's always another drug to try.
