One of the first things I look for when joining a site like this is who is really behind it and what are their true motives. Looks like this site is sponsored by a major Pharmaceutical company, not to say this is necessarily a bad thing it just give me a reason to question any info I get here and look much deeper into the companies involved to try to see if they are more concerned with helping us get better or helping their bottom line. We will see

Hello Everybody I want to thank you all for such wonderful replies. I haven't been back here since i first joined, just happened to see an email form the site and thought I would check in to see how everyone is doing. I plan to make this one of the main sites I visit while I'm online looks like a great many nice people who share a common problem.

Hi and welcome, I have only been on this site a short time and I have found a caring bunch of people that share their daily struggles and triumphs. Not once have I been bombarded with unnecessary stuff, just the ads that are on the pages. Hope you like it here and decide to stay.

If a pharmaceutical company showed up here pushing something, they'd get stepped on by a sea of boots. Every diabetes community I visit is accompanied by distasteful advertising. I rarely even look at it.

Great questions. It is always good to know who is behind sites like this.

We are a small private company. We do accept advertising from companies that offer solutions to the patients who visit our sites. But these advertisers do not control the conversations here or have input on what we write or say.

We work very hard to be all about the patient and sharing knowledge and wisdom that can only be gained by living with a disease or chronic condition.

I hope you have a great day. Let me know if you have more questions.

I should also note that our company is filled with people who have personal experience with chronic diseases. For example, my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 8. He's doing great. He's 20 years old now and uses an insulin pump.

I am one of the community managers here and I also live with type 1 diabetes. This community is simply here for all of us who live with diabetes to connect with each other and learn from each other's experiences.

Hi and welcome to DC. Many of the members are helpful. I really don't care about who is behind the site. There are a lot of ads but it is up to you to view them and decide if you want to purchase something.

What is important to me are the people here who have been living with diabetes longer than I have and they have been very helpful. You will get an answer to your questions.

Hi and welcome. Don't be affraid to speak up and ask any question here. As for who sponsores the site, who cares. If they have something you like by way of any ads then check it out, other wise do as I and many other's here do and just ignore them. It usually isn't something I use or that my insurance covers anyway. But, you might benefit from the ads and that would be a plus.

They don't contact you so you don't have to worry about anything being slanted in their favor. Just people dealing with diabetes and it's issues or taking care of a diabetic and trying to help by our own experience or finding info that may be of some help:)

GabbyPA 2012-07-22 12:34:56 -0500 Report

If you hang out in the discussions, you get information from people with diabetes and how they are dealing on a daily basis with it. Nothing expert, nothing absolute, but with a lot of support and understanding.

If you go to our ask the experts area, you will get people that are experts and offer their expertize based on their line of work, so you might get more directional information there.

The videos are what they are. Some are professional, some are from everyday folks like our members here.

If you are hanging out in the recipe section you will most definitely not get a dietitians view of recipes. These are posted by our members.

So we are a site of regular folks for the most part who are very happy that people like John Crowley (whose son is a type 1) had the heart and ideas to offer us a place to share our experiences.

Alliance Health monitors it and develops new things for us to use here, but they don't "slant" anything to fit any particular feel. What you get here is 99% from the members who are just here to get help and support. To expect a site to function without advertizing is kind of short sighted and to say that the advertisers bend our information offered here is kind of unfair.

We do have advertisements to pay for the site, its upkeep and the administrators who work here. If we did not have ads then it would not be free. None of us have been approached for money and just soliciting us is prohibited. We have good people here. We learn a lot, make friends and give support on both Diabetic issues and non-diabetic issues. If learning, growing, having support is for you, then this is a good home.

Not sure what I am missing on this but your post pushed me to dig a little on who supports this site. Alliance Health is not a pharmaceutical company, and while it's page identifies private startup capital not sure where your issue arises with regards to any specific company. Ads are on most sites as a revenue source to help cover costs, but it seems as though content on Diabetes Connect is wholly driven by individuals. What's more pharmaceutical companies have strict regulations on direct patient contact, which is why you see the boilerplate disclaimers on every ad. My experience here is people sharing their experiences, questions, successes, and support.

howdy Iamcured, WELCOME to DiabeticConnect.

I am replying to you as one who has been on this site a long time (nearly 4 yrs) and my experience here has been wonderful, and keeps me coming back, nearly every day. I have learned a lot here and there is little "interference" from the administrators here. I learned how to ditch my diabetes medications while here (I was on insulin) and I even tell how I did it. Nobody told me to take it down or not talk about it. If a Big Pharma company were manipulating us here, I would expect that it would be different.

From what I understand this site is funded by advertising and obviously since we are persons with Diabetes (PWDs) the advertising will be medically related, and you'll see some from Big Pharma companies too. If you want to discuss Alliance Health's business plan you might wish to contact them using the link "Feedback" below. There is also a link "About Alliance Health" below, and you could "friend" and email one or more of the administrators.

I remain here because I love the interaction between the friendly people here and the information which I get mostly from the other members here. Folks who know what it is like to have this malady, folks who've walked a mile or many miles in shoes like mine.

Please don't write us off because of mistrust and suspicion. Get to know us for a while and enjoy life with us.

Blessings to you and yours

James Baker

I have found that in this life, the way look at things is what we'll find. I agree with CJ55, I'm fairly new here as well and I'm type 2. My concern is nothing more than keeping my blood sugar managed and share whatever will help with others and management. This dis-ease can & do affect the body, mind & spirit so it's good to hear encouragement, make someone smile and/or share ideas. I hope you find good friends, good ideas and above all helpful information you can use and share. Good luck with your endeavors!

I am new here as of 3 weeks ago. I do not know who sponsores this site. However, I do know that I have met many very nice people on here thus far. All whom have been helpful, kind, courteous, given advice, great conversations/discussions etc. I have learned many things in a short time period from everyone, much more than my drs. have told me. Welcome to DC. I do hope you enjoy your time here. :-)

Yes, you should seek your own level of comfort. I take no medications so it's not a concern for me. I won't be prompted to start taking things that I don't need…assuming that is even a motive, which I haven't seen here.

Next Discussion: Bad blood sugar reading. »
