Hello Sharon7112, with 39 years of diabetes behind you, you are someone i could learn a lot from. I'm not miserable about being diabetic its made me take better care of myself and i'm healthier than i was before, i just needed to talk to others with diabetes it can be difficult to not know anyone else who has it.

jayabee52 2012-07-21 11:09:53 -0500 Report

you're right as diabetes can be such a "hidden" disease. I got talking to many people in my church and found that many had it and I had no clue.

Also found friends that had diabetes and never knew by the way the lived or ate. It amazed me. Guess that is why my doctor is so happy with me because I didn't cover it up but took control. First time I had control over my life and it has made me make changes in other directions of my life. Definitely less depression now and more confidence.

Hidden is right, you would think it did not exsist here, there must be hundreds of diabetics here in Northampton but there doesn't seem to be any way of finding them or getting together, i am going to ask if i can put something on the doctors noticeboard see if i can start a "coffee club" or something.

Howdy Janet Ann! WELCOME to DiabeticConnect!

I was in your place nearly 4 yrs ago. I am still here. There's a lot of helpful, informative, loving people here. Ask any question which occurs to you (preferably in a discussion like this one) as the ONLY 'stupid' question here is a SINCERE question which is NOT asked.

Welcome to our community. You will find the people here very open and willing to answer your questions. We are all in this together.

Are you a type 1 or type 2? How long? You will find support when you need it and we are always willing to let you vent when you need that too.

Hi, i'm type 1 & have been for 12 years, i have been visiting this site for a few months and you all seem to be very friendly, My first question, does anyone find that wheat products send their blood sugars much higher than expected, i count carbs and cannot seem to balance wheat with my insulin, i am not eating wheat this week to see if my levels settle.

I am type 2 and white flour spikes mine from time to time. It also depends on what other carbs I eat with the flour. Usually if I want white flour, I won't eat any other carbs with it.

Irish1951 2012-07-18 15:27:24 -0500 Report

That is one of the first things I found that I needed to watch. I am a type 2 and I am off Meds now. I control with diet and exercise only. I carb count and white flour will definitely spike my sugar. I have switched to whole wheat or other types if grains. You do have to watch labels because "whole wheat" doesn't necessarily mean whole grain. The less processed a food the better it works for me and the less it gives me a spike.

janet ann 2012-07-18 15:39:11 -0500 Report

I dont eat much white flour and i will be making sure that when i do have wheat it will be whole grain only, like you i also avoid most processed foods (except a little chocolate now & then) i cant be good all the time.

roxiekb 2012-07-23 13:53:58 -0500 Report

I am a chocoholic or at least I was. My doctor told me I can have 1 piece of dark chocolate a day as it is an antioxidant and actually good for me. That made me happy. I usually have a piece when I get those strong urges and I am okay again. I definitely stay away from white flour and white rice. When you bake with wheat flour, I read where you should add more vanilla so it does not come out dry. Haven't tried that yet but when I when I made banana bread with wheat flour it was dryer, so waiting to try the added vanilla.
