So tell the truth, are you always a little uneasy when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday?

If the only vacancy in the apartment building is on the 13th floor, do you choose to look somewhere else?

When inviting guests to dinner, would you rather call the whole thing off than invite exactly 13 guests?

Well, if the number 13 brings a certain uneasiness in your gut, then our newest community is for you. Triskaidekaphobia Connect ( brings together people who suffer from fear of the number 13. You can support each other, discuss ways to cope, and of course, try to figure out why bakers slip a sneaky 13th item into your bag when clearly you ordered a dozen!

So don't be afraid and don't hesitate. Make sure you're one of the first twelve to join. Because we're pretty sure no one is going to be willing to be the 13th member. :-)

I dont have a problem with the 13th, thats a great day because my son was born on the 13th.

IronOre 2012-07-16 14:21:20 -0500 Report

That's a good point . . . because approximately 1 out of every 30 people have their birthday on the 13th of the month, so it can't be "bad luck" for them.

Nope, it is just another day. I'm sure if we looked we could find reason's to be uneasy about any day of the week/date along with most anything else. It is just mind over matter, I don't mind, so it doesn't matter:) I don't believe in the whole break a mirror, walking under a ladder, black cat crossing my path etc… I actually get a kick out of watching people who do believe in all the nonsense as it is quite intertaining!! I have friends who do believe and can't belive the measures they go through to get past all this.

I don't mind being the 13th member, but I don't need to be there.

Haha, Yes there is a support group, unfortunately the name of your phobia is so long that it broke the site. Sorry about that :-)

Many hotels do not have a 13thfloor. They call it the 14th floor and leave a space in the elevator buttons blank as if to indicate there is a 13th floor but you are passing it to go to the14th. I first noticed this on Lake Shore drive in Chicago. Interesting

Thanks for the info. But your really on the 13th floor! My friend a maintenene worker said they do this to trick people into believing they skipped the 13th floor, but they haven't. It's a mind trick to ease their fears. If you look outside and count the floors you'll see that there is a 13th floor and maybe not a 14th. Just because they don't number it 13, but 14 doesn't mean it is not there. If you have two floors, saying it is floor 1 and 3 doesn't mean two isn't there it's just numbered wrong:)

Did I freak people out about the 13th floor now? Come on, most are inteligent enough to already know this info.

Yes I thought it was amusing that our building does not have a 13th floor. The funny part is in some other countries the ground floor is not counted as 1. So what we will call a 3 storey house will be called ground plus 2. So in that kind of system what we call fourteen will be the thirteen. Anyways, I think the fear is of the perception that something is 13 rather than actually it being 13, if that makes sense.

pixsidust 2012-07-14 13:50:32 -0500 Report

Thats what I was saying, they call it the 14th floor and of course you are on the 13th floor. Nobody is going to own a building and not use all parts of it.

dietcherry 2012-07-14 16:23:48 -0500 Report

Agreed pix. The 13 is eliminated so those who fear it wont have to see it because triskaidekaphobia is a fear of the NUMBER 13, not 13 things in and of themselves :)

I am not superstitious so Friday the 13th doesn't matter to me. When they made the movies they should have stopped after the first one. They were really bad sequels.

The theory behind a bakers dozen is that bread is sold by weight. Bakers could be fined for short weighting customers so to prevent this, they add an extra roll or loaf of bread to the dozen. Next time you go to the supermarket go to the bakery dept and look at a loaf of fresh baked French or Italian bread. It has a weight sticker on it. The loaf is priced by weight.

Huh, we'll have to check to see if it really is blocking only people with 13 letters in their name. Happy Friday the 13th!

Here's an interesting fact..They skip the 13th floor in high rise apartment buildings atleast in NYC ..Get into an elevator there is no number 13 goes from 12 then 14

MAYS 2012-07-13 09:18:39 -0500 Report

Most places have the letter "M" for the thirteenth floor or no designation at all, just skipping the number altogether.
For all of the intelligence attributed to mankind, we still insist on holding onto superstional nonsense!

How many people actually have seen that an entire floor is vacant, or that when taking the stairs you somehow walk past an entire flight of stairs and get to the 14th floor? How would you do that? I'll admit that some buildings will use the 13th floor for storage, etc, but most just mark it 14th and people believe it.

Nick1962 2012-07-13 08:38:19 -0500 Report

Thats true of about 90% of the buildings in the world. I think only India uses a 13th floor designation. There's also some building in China that omit anything with a 4 because the word "four" in chinese sounds too much like "death"
