My Christmas holiday is going to be spent with a dear friend of mine who is having her gastric by-pass reversed. She is not afraid of much, but she is afraid of this and asked if I would be there with her. Her original surgery was done about 6 years ago and has now developed an ulcer. Her options are limited and she fears the worst.

Have any of you had yours reversed? Is there anything I can do, or should not do to aid in her recovery? I plan to cook and clean for her family, take care of her home for a while. My husband is going to spend time with her son, who loves video games…hubbie will be in heaven. LOL

Just hoping that someone out here knows what she is going thru and can help me help her.

Final update. My friend ended up not getting surgery after all. Her original doctor took a look this week and found the ulcer had healed and the problem was obstruction. He stretched the entry point and now she can eat again. Does that just beat all. The real kicker is that she and her husband had asked her DR in SC to take another look and he said it wouldn't matter. So he didn't even look...she suffered for two months needlessly because her doctor didn't want to look. OH....what a jerk.
Anyway, she is on her way home, all doing better and no surgery required. Whew!
Thanks again to all of you who kept her in your prayers.

Gabby, I am so glad your friend is doing fine and able to eat again. I do believe in prayers. That is ashamed her MD couldn't take 10 mins out of his time to check her. Just glad to see her back on the road to recovery…Debe

Wow thank god she called her original doctor. I'm happy that something so horrible was solved so simply. I hope she calls that doctor if she has any more issues and that she finds a new doctor in NC.!!!

Sigh of relief!!

So happy to hear your friend finally received the care she needed. It still amazed me to see the lack of compassion and professionalism with the doctor and her insurance company. I have learned the hard way you really have to push the medical staff and insurance to get what is needed. My sister just had surgery for breast cancer and the surgeon never told her to about the possibility of developing lymphedema. Thank goodness a wonderful cancer radiologist steppin in and helped set up the care for her now serious care of lymphedema. She now has to wear 2 compression sleeves on her right hand/arm for the rest of her life.

How fortunate your friend has you in her life! Loving, caring friends make all the difference in this world. My best friend of 25 years died suddenly last year and I miss her so very much.

Thank goodness something is finally getting done! My friend ended up contacting her origianl surgeon here in Florida and he is going to do the surgery and get it covered by insurance and do it less invasivly and keep the by-pass in tact. My friend flew down to Florida today and her surgery will be this week. Thanks to all of you for our concern and prayers. Her Doctor in NC is a total jerk, and I hope that some press gets out on his lack on urgency in this issue. It has been a torment, but now there is hope.

I am in tears...here is the email from my friend who was supposed to have her surgery in December of 2008.

"Well my biggest fear of late has been realized- I have been declined on my appeal review. So Hubby is getting info for us to pay directly and it will most likely set us up for bankruptcy. What a choice death or bankruptcy? Feeling down today will email again when I have more concrete info. Thanks for all your love-"

This is just unbelievable! I am so upset. I plan to contact TV and News Paper. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to go about it and get results.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I spoke with her husband and we are going to wait until after Thrusday to do anything. She has one more meeting to see if they can atleast cover the galbladder part and "while inside" do the reversal and just have to pay the difference. What a joke. They were looking at 70K for the surgery and the doctor/hospital required 50K up front. Good grief! There is no compassion.

in all the land the only real compassion you will find are the "ones" that follow HIS example! they don't just talk it! they walk it!

Thank you all. She really appreciates that. She was told that the only way an emergency surgery would happen was if she was in threat of death in 4 days. OMG, they actually have a formula for that, unbelivable. I hope we have some better news today.

I was hoping she would have gotten an answer yesterday. How long can they make her wait?! It is so upsetting. I have sent her off a note to see if she gets an aswer today. Now I am thinking I need to be there before the surgery. She has got to be so depressed about all of this.

She is still on hold. I have not gotten any news today. She said that the insurance company might let her know today...it is so frustrating. I told her if they refuse her again, we are taking it to the TV, news papers, and her state legislature. It is horrible. She has lost all of her strength, and her weight continues to drop and she is below her ideal weight as of 2 weeks ago...it is really worring me a lot. Thank you for asking and keep her in your prayers.

Gabby, What do her MD think? Can't they say anything to the insurance company about how serious she is. You know they could probably hold the insurance company liable if something serious happens to her in the meantime. That worries me. Youns shoulkd take it to TV and the papers…Debe

Her doctor is the one making the request. I am furious at how long it is taking. I told her that we need to contact the "problem solvers" at her TV station, the news paper and so on. She was afraid to make waves since they had denied her once already. I told her the other day that if she is denied again though, we will be contacting some very important people. This is ludricris. She told me that she had no energy to even do an every day thing like getting dressed. I am so worried and I just don't know what to do. Her husband is beside himself with frustration and they have a young son...I can only imagine the worry that is going thru his mind. I just can't believe they play with people's lives this way. It's not like she is asking for a butt implant. Good Grief!

Unbelievable; I just read this; and she actually has insurance. What kind of insurance company would put a persons life at risk, She is going to end up in the hospital in an emergency and then they will be paying twice as much. You know this? If it is an emergency, the doctors' and hospitals are committed to help, no matter what. Please send her my best wishes, and I hope that this pain and burning will subside, I care deeply. I am so sorry, Gabby. Claudia

have you found out anymore about your friend?

Gabby
GabbyPA 2008-12-23 21:08:59 -0600 Report

You are not going to believe this. Her doctor took 17 days to resubmit the letter to get the surgery approved. THEN the insurance company said they have 15 days to review the request. All the time, my friend is litterally wasting away because she cannot eat, and when she does, it won't stay down. She is so upset and I am livid. I told her that we need to get this public, and though she wants to, she doesn't want to make waves and loose her chance for an approval. But you can bet that we will be rasing some noise after her surgery is done.
I cannot believe this is happening to someone WITH insurance. It is a necessity that she has the surgery now, and I am so afraid that she could end up in such a bad condition that the unthinkable happens.

I know that insurance are so sad. But to put someones lfe in danger, Thats where I don't understand…I pay almost $442 am month for my secondary insurance. That don't cover my medicine, dental etc. I can't get other insurance because I am high risk due to being on dialysis, and then getting my transplant. But if I get a job they would have to add me to the companys insurance. What part of I can't stand on my own and just learning to walk do I have a chance. I was put off work because my BP was so low…So I am Paying almost $6000 a year for practically nothing?…Debe

Wow I'm so sad & sorry to hear about your friend.I will definitely be praying for her.I totally understand about the insurance issue. They take and take our money WHEN we're not sick but if we get sick they practiaclly make us beg to get treatment paid for. What I don't understand is why they don't seem to think about how getting that surgery would probably be less expensive for them in the long run, instead of keeping her sick and needing to see her doctor constanly or even having to be admited to the emergency room.My doctor wants me to get that surgey and urges me constanly to get it.I am just afraid something like this might happen to me & thats's why I keep putting her off.On the plus side I have gone on a lowfat , no sugar diet and lost over 75lbs on my own!well please keep us informed on your friend , my prayers are with her.

Wow, I just found out from my friend that her insurance company does not want to pay for her surgery to fix the complication. Two days before she goes in, gee thanks! They covered the initial surgery, but now they won't cover the repair.

So...if any of you are considering one of these kinds of surgeries to help with your diabetes, ask about that. Hers was successful for over 6 years, so you never know. Ask about it up front. Get it in writing...sheesh.

We are in a wait mode right now. I don't want to go up and then feel awful when she does have the surgery by not being able to go back to help her out. We are working thru things now. She has a meeting with her Doctor on Monday, and we will know more. Fortunatly, train tickets are not as difficult to change as an airplane ticket. We can cancel as late as the departure date with no penelties. So I suppose next week we will find out more.

She developed an ulcer at the wound site and her option is to make the small stomach smaller and maybe have this surgery again, or have it reversed. I told her that I would have it reversed, and I think that is what she wanted to do.

highlandcitygirl

i think it is a good idea to have it reversed! the other way does not offer good options if it develops another ulcer. that is scary!

Gabby, Everyone wants a friends like you. How long are you planning on spending with her? How many children does she have? Just thought I might help with some suggestions. You already took the first step by being there for her. I am stiill going through a long road to recovery. Right now I could tell you alot of my friends were there for me too. As the recovery get tougher on me the friends list got shorter. Now I siit here and think they must not have really been my friends. I would of never left my friends with poor excuses and reason why they were no able to come over. So my word of advise if you start this with her, got through it with her until she recoverys. It could be done even over the phone. Just 1 person makes a big difference in someones life. I thank God everyday day for my"few" GOOD FRIENDS…dEBE

Hey Debe,

She is in South Carolina and we are in Florida. We are going to be spending 2 weeks up there, Christmas with kids again, how cool. She just has one son, who is 11 now and into all little boy things.

Ironic, her name is Deb too...hmmm. We were room mates when we lived in South Florida and we just have that kindred spirit. She lost her mom a couple of years ago, and her dad this year, so I know she is just needing a "mom". That is kind of what I have always been to my rommies grwoing up.

Our family here was not going to be doing anything for Christmas so this was a perfect opportunity for us to sneak away, guilt free and help her and her family out. We keep in touch and I know that seeing her, no matter what her condition, will be great. She was a great teacher to me, very wise in many ways. It is the least I could do for her.

Yes, friendships that can last thru harship are "root" friendships. One day I will share with you my tree ananogy of frienships, it is quite liberating when it comes to those that don't hang around for too long. Helps relive the bitterness and hurt that comes when they seem to let us down.

So any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
