How do you bring your diabetic A-game to 4th of July BBQ'S?
Cakes shaped like a flag, red white and blue sugary beverages, and potato salad. Patriotic? Not so much…
This has been the argument with extended family for over a decade at my house. I think holidays can be fun AND healthy.
Here's a link to some fun ideas: http://sheilaobb.wordpress.com/2011/08/23/bui...
It doesn't have the nutritional information, but the cucumber cups are a favorite. I also like the alternative of these Caprese Kabobs: http://www.diabeticconnect.com/recipes/4790-t...

I just left the buns off my hamburger and hot dog and had a very small amount of baked beans.
BS reading 2 hours later = 94. ;-)
I have no idea why on one of the hottest days of the year people want to cook over a fire and hang out outside! I am staying cool inside eating steak fajitas and home made shaved ice. I guess for those who do go skip the bread, eat the meat, bring a salad and enjoy the watermelon thats 12 carbs per cup!!
Sounds yummy!
I bring a lot of insulin lol lol lol
Holidays are my free days so I eat what I want in moderation. I don't drink sugary beverages so I have my Crystal Light in a bottle of water. Just as festive. If I want a tiny bit of a flag cake I will have it sans frosting.
The cucumber cups are a great idea…I think I will fill mine with chicken salad!
This will be the first for me. Honestly, I hadn't really given much thought to it. I will probably just do what I've been doing. Which is sticking to the foods that I know won't spike me like crazy and going easy on the ones that will.
I love how my potato salad tastes (and probably will never change the recipe) but I know not to have too much of it. Will try to go without sauce on my chicken and ribs, or maybe just a light coating. I always have salad and fruit on hand, so nothing new there. Maybe I'll make a fruit salad. Haven't done that in a while. I go without the dessert though. Cake is not my friend and I have a hard time with eating just a little bit of any dessert. That one I'm still trying to master.
I make a "faux"-tato salad using cauliflower, but I make it exactly the same as I used to make my potato salad (except I use stevia instead of a bit of sugar). I can barely tell the difference…it's delicious!
