we all know the importance of good diet and exercise. How we handle stress is another important factor I don't think is talked about enough.
Stress by it self KILLS, with out any help from diabetes..I believe it is the most under diagnosed cause of death out there..Young people are committing suicide in record numbers people drop dead from heart attacks all the time and never is the underlining factor listed on the autopsy report..The person died from stress.
How we relieve our self from stress is important..For me it's easy,I just jump on my bike and hit the road..I get tunnel vision..Me and the bike become one with the road and I don't have a care in the world..The times when that's not an option then it's youtube,Fleetwood mac..I crank it up and party with stevie nicks..It's a great way to drown out annoying people.
That's what I do..Now lets hear what you do when you feel it's time for some stress relief

When you have a high stress level job you need to take up walking 3 miles a day. No one to stress you and bother you. Why are you retiring? After about 2 months you will be stressed more. I plan to never retire, all my friends that are retiring are not happy. I plan to work till I drop. We will all pray for your good health till you retire.

Understand your stress. I have had several of my Alheimer's residents tell me, "Well, you sure seem to think you know alot about me." When I can supply some of their many memory gaps.
Sometimes the best you can do is decide if they aren't hurting themself or someone else does it really matter if some activity of daily living doesn't go according to plan.
I have fellow staff who stress over things like a resident who would wear underwear on her head at night. She only did it because she didn't want her hairdo messed up. A few days later her daughter brought in her head cover. In the meantime, her hair still looked great during the day and she was happy at bedtime and during the night with her solution.

That's a tough one every one deals with stress differently.. If I was you and looking at retirement in 6 months..I would set myself up with some kind of reward,,maybe something I always wanted or a place to go..Then work on a mind set that Say's I can Handel this and in 6 months I am going to do…you fill in the blanks and focus on that

Yes, stress is a killer. Dr. Stefan Ripich says in his book, "30 Day Diabetes Cure" that "Stress a stimulant, it causes sugar to be released into your bloodstream & triggers hormones that upset glucose levels. High stress equals higher blood sugar."

I have always become easily stressed and am now doing my best to control it by praying, listening to my music collection on my home made CDs, going on "power/fast" walks, going on drives in my antique/classic cars and doing odd jobs around my 6 rent houses & my home. Sometimes I actually get work done while relieving stress & that's a GOOD thing! Often I carry my boom box along with me while I'm doing mindless jobs.

I won't go into what causes most of my stress, that's not the point. Point is, I'm trying to kill that killer and it's not easy. I tried alcohol for a long time (years) & enjoyed the VERY TEMPORARY escape, but that only started & fueled other problems that added more stress. Last week I stopped drinking vodka, cold turkey and have to admit, the temptation is still there & I'm sure that will continue, especially when a crisis, an "impossible" time constraint or an argument in the home happens, but I'm managing to keep on keeping on without the vodka crutch AND life is really better (and cheaper!). I finally learned that alcohol brings depression, which causes even more stress. Yes, victory, ONE week in a row! :o) Years ago I stopped smoking, also cold turkey, so I CAN DO THIS.

I hope this helps someone. It's helping me by just thinking about it and typing this. OK, now back to Dr. Ripich's book…Tony5657 in TX

Thanks. I needed to read this today. I, too, am trying to handle my stress without cigarettes or beer. I am on day 4 and holding on strong. It really hasn't been that bad, so far, and hope it continues this way. I CAN DO IT TOO!!

That's great tony you are making your stress relief work for you by doing something positive when you are stressed..I am real big on trying to turn a negative in to a positive.
I gave up my major vices some years back, drugs and alcohol abuse..so I can very much relate to what you are going through.
I an working on my last remaining one, smoking..I stress out wanting a cigarette at times real bad..So I said how can I make this work for me? Now when I'm stressing over wanting one,,I drop down and do 50 push ups..5 sets of 10..It relieves my stress and and I'm getting back in shape..
You are so right,,YOU CAN DO THIS..Much luck and good fortune on your journey thru life and keep on fighting the good fight

Old Biker,
When you mentioned your doing 50 push ups to help your stress when you are tempted to smoke, in college I did that exact same thing when I was tempted to have sex with a girl. As a result I developed a VERY LARGE chest!!! It did work though, … for awhile. Have fun dude!!

I put on those walking shoes and have at the trail! I also can *lose* my stress doing this and it really improves my mood when I am done.

For the past month I have been working with the police commander in my district and the community relations sgt. as well as the state's attorney's office and my city council rep and a few other people attempting to reduce a crime wave in a housing development. They have had 6 shootings since the end of March. When the commander, sgt and I get stressed we vent with each other. Keeps our stress level down and we keep forging ahead. We had one major brainstorming meeting and I am working on putting together another which will tell us what plans and programs we will be putting in place over the next few weeks. Other than this problem my stress level is very low.

old biker, I treat annoying people like a bad tv show or radio program. I turn them off. I am very good at ignoring people.

Blank look and change subject is my method of dealing with annoyig co-workers. Get great results most of the time. Just wish I had the remote to mute them the times it doesn't work out. That's when the selective hearing tunes in and I hear some very funny things at times.

I like to read or watch a good chick flick. Sometimes I will buy something new, doesn't have to be anything out of this world, shopping can be destressing! Walking outdoors is great! I was a Harley girl a million years ago, a rush for me is when there is a run and there are at least 200 bikes roaring as the ground rumbles! This is what life is about!

People do no know how great it is to have the wind in your hair(what ever we have left) and the bugs in you teeth but for the last 25 years I releived my stress by hitting the road with my 94 FLHR. Even if it is just for a short ride. Annoying people or situations, I just walk away from. Keep the shiney side up and enjoy the road.

I lose my self in a book or call my sister and chat with her on the phone
for hours on end. Which we do on a regular basis anyway, we act as
sounding boards for each other.

Getting focused intently on something else. Varies from trying to learn Danish (ok really listening to Danish hip hop, rap or pop)…trying to catch an in focus flight of a bumble bee on a digital camera…figuring out how to make an almond flour cake that the extended family will like better than The Cake Lady's Cake ( oh yeah, someday soon I will dethrone her)…oops I think I just made my stress level go up.

Believe it or not, WASHING DISHES is my greatest stress reliever! Hot sudsy lemon, orange, or grapefruit-scented water allows me to do my best problem-solving. I think it has to do with the aromatherapy of the citrus—its very energizing! But in fact just being near water gives me piece of mind because: I was born in the sign of water (a line from my very favorite song—guess)!

I need to be by myself when stressed and my favorite pursuits are mainly solitary ones so I can revitalize while reading, writing, drawing, listening to music, gardening, shopping online, and endlessly researching anything that catches my fancy.

Oh and hitching a ride on the back of a Harley is always a good time !!!!!

Try to get out side, like I responded to another disucssion, go any where there are flowers, sun and a book or my family:) Just LOVE it and feel totally relaxed. I also love to turn up the volume on the stereo and just think of the memories that go with each song.

I will always remember what I was doing the first time I heard ABC by the Jackson 5 on the radio. Mom was combing my hair. She loved Michael Jackson. I would put his History VHS in the player and let her watch it till she got tired.

I loved The Temptations and play their music all the time. I love the memories and the fun I had when there songs were mainly what you heard on the radio.

My wonderful son-in-law informed my daughter that without stress I would fall apart. Apparently stress is the only thing keeping me together!! I truly go from one stress to another, with very little relief. But laughter helps.
Apparently I raised a smart a$$, and she married one!! :)

locarbarbie 2012-06-05 11:16:09 -0500 Report

Grannie, with you it is "stress", my daughter claims I am "overly sensitive", when what she really means is that I refuse to just let her walk all over me when she is feeling snarky! I love my daughter (and adore my grandchildren) but she can really push my hot button! My grandchildren offset the stress that my daughter creates, especially my youngest, the 3 year old. I am gwamma to him, and he says the funniest things. My grandog, who loves me without reservation (she is a big chocolate lab) is also a big stress reliever!

Sophie and barbie, stop letting others stress you out. When people know they can get a reaction out of you by simply pushing the right button, they have control.

I emailed the Tenants Association President requesting a time for a meeting. She did not respond to a previous email and two messages asking for a date. She emailed me back a letter chewing me out. I emailed back anger is a response but you still haven't given me a date. Have not heard from her since. Don't buy into their madness and they will stop pushing buttons. Try it and see if it works. Snarky people hate when you respond okay dear or sure dear. Stumps them most of the time.

locarbarbie 2012-06-08 12:06:14 -0500 Report

Joyce, I will keep that phrase in mind, especially since how I normally respond does not seem to be very effective! Thanks for your input!

I feel for you. I know what you are saying! I have the same problems with our son, and daughter in law. I am not allowed to say things to them. "They can handel it!", they tell me. I ignor them. I see no since in making my life any more complicated. I let them deal with it. But they better not ask me my opinion either. I will tell them. Just love them, even though it's hard. Don't let them get to you. Hugs to you :) Keep doing things that make you laugh!

I try to get outside and get some fresh air.. walking is always good.. I have recently started getting to the gym too! Closing your eyes and focus on relaxation. Thinking positive and invisioning a favorite place or time in your life.. these are all things we can do. If all youre doing is focusing on your breathing that will relax you for sure!

Hope this helps! Sorry if its a bit rambly…
