They're here – new and improved “friend” and “follow” features! Based on your feedback, we've improved the ways you can connect with other members, make friends and see what everyone is up to. And we made it even easier to control how much personal information you share.

Check out this informational page to learn more about the changes, see how they work and try them out:

Did this improvement somehow effect notifications? Seems that ever since this was changed, I only get notifications when they're folks in my friends list, and sometimes not at all. Lately, the only way for me to see who's responded was through tracking.

This sounds like the problem that Gambling has been having also. Maybe it is a bigger system glitch, though it doesn't affect all.

I don't know Nick! I get all my notifications that I have checked off in my profile.

Perhaps check on your "Privacy and settings" tab under "notifications" and see if something had been inadvertently changed there.

Did that James. Even changed them and changed them back again.
In fact didn't get an e-mail notification you responded here. If I hadn't tracked this, I'd not have known.

I got notifications until my box was to full and one bounced. I've requested it be reset, but it hasn't been yet. This happened once before to me and I reset my notification selections hoping that would correct it. It didn't, so I had to ask Alliance to do so…and have had to ask again this time. Still waiting.

Carol you will need to contact your email provider is our notifications are making it into your email box. We have no control over that from our side. Other than that are you having any problems with your notifications? We are trying to pin down the notification issue.

Hey Nick I have been following this conversation. We are trying to pin down the exact problem with notifications. Could you send me an inbox message with some specific issues or instances that you are having the problem?

Nick1962
Nick1962 2012-06-13 18:14:08 -0500 Report

It seems to be resolved. For a while (about a week) I was getting no e-mail notifications for any activity. Maybe 1 out of 25 would get through. Seems to be fixed now. Thanks!

I used the "Feed Back" function on the DC page. Didn't get any response from them (since I'm not getting responses from anyone) and emailed Kate yesterday. Haven't checked yet today, but Somoca's comment yesterday to Kate left me wondering if Kate was out for the day. If so, I'll try Jeanette later today after I've checked my inbox to be sure it's not working yet.

Gambling says he has notified them several times with no results either, so you guys may be having a bigger problem than I am. Notification is the same regardless.

See Jeanette's response to Gambling further down this discussion page, Nick. It sounds like it fits for you also.

I've noticed that when I respond to a friend request it makes me and the other party automatically friends. Am I missing something? Do I have to ignore that person to decline?

jayabee52
jayabee52 2012-06-07 20:20:26 -0500 Report

As I understand it the other person has to accept your friendship before you are mutual friends. I think if you want to decline you could ignore them or go to their profile page and down on the left side of the page there is a link to block that person from further contacting you.

Now here is a simple suggestion… where we can give the hugs and etc to our friends? I'd like to be able to do more than one at a time. Like a hug with the thanks flowers for example. Just an idea!

Have you contacted someone in an email about it? Sometimes they don't get to discussion posts often enough to deal with things that need immediate attention.

I am sure they are working on finding the problem. Sometimes it's very hard to figure out things if they don't have specifics to work with. I know they work hard to make things work right. This must be a stickler for them.

I am sorry that you have been so frustrated. I believe the tech team has found the problem. However, it may be a week or more before it can get fixed. It turned out to be a rather complicated issue that is tied to other things so it will take time to reslove the issue. Thank you for your patience in the matter though.

how did your screen on your computer or phone taste? LoL!

EDIT: If you mean you click on those who are following you, I can see them when I click them, and then if someone is following you you can also click that button and a drop down box appears asking if you want to invite them to be a friend. I really like that part of the feature.

The blue ones are those who you have not contacted before or followed previously. I believe those which are gray are those who have followed you previously, and that is how you now bring them onto your friends list. (At least that is what I surmise at this time.)

EDIT: Recently noted that the gray color has now morphed to a lighter blue color. Otherwise everything seems the same.

In light of changes. Why has the year been taken off our posts?

jayabee52
jayabee52 2012-06-04 13:53:07 -0500 Report

Has it been? I remember seeing the yr posted on posts over 1 yr old, but thought it had never been on posts within the current year. It is kinda like when the computer says the post was posted "today" or "yesterday" but getting beyond yesterday it reverts to the date of the posting (ie: "May 31")

pixsidust
pixsidust 2012-06-10 23:43:02 -0500 Report

Look at this and what do you think. It has to be last year or later but no year. It was a featured discussion and July has not been here yet

Now that you mention it, you're right. I think I remember that coming in 2010 (but could be wrong). Maybe we should ask on the feedback link? It would be useful for the posts over a yr old to have the yr included.

Jeanette Terry

We are working on fixing that feature. I also agree that it would be nice to be able to see the exact date that something was posted.

This is great!

Something else that I thought might be relevant here… I was getting ready to actually start a desperate discussion post, too!

In the name of finding new friends to connect with, we are updating our D-Blog Roll over at DiabetesMine. But we already have dozens on there, from Type 1s to Type 2s and parents and general patient bloggers. Let us know if you know of others who should be included, or if you happen to find a connection through that list! We'd welcome the chance to connect more fellow PWDs in our community!

It's here: http://www.diabetesmine.com/blogroll

You can also choose to not allow anyone to follow your activity. Simply go to your profile page and choose the "Privacy & Settings" tab. Then click on the "Privacy" blue link near the top of the page. As you look down your Privacy settings, you'll see a new option. The "Friends and Followers" options allow you to control who can see your list of Friends, Following, and Followers. Right under that, you'll see the option to control "Who can follow me." If you want, you can change that setting to "No one" and that will block anyone from being able to follow your activity.

Hope that helps.

jayabee52
jayabee52 2012-05-30 17:02:25 -0500 Report

Go to the person's profile who you want to block. On the left side of the profile beneath the badges there is a little link report/block (screen name). The location of that function has not changed in this update of the site.

Why do you ask, are you having difficulty with someone on the site?

pixsidust
pixsidust 2012-05-30 20:45:52 -0500 Report

Yes, The same person who attacked Temi a while back. I flagged them after they tried to pick a fight. I came to them privately but after all the names I was called in private, not wanting a board war, I think blocking is important. I also have people who are following me who are spammers. I do not want to tell everyone they can't follow but anyone who I think is spam… yes

I really like it this way. I also really appreciate the page that explains how each "level" of connection works. I went through and reassigned my privacy setting and notifications to make sure I am getting what I want out of it. Thanks guys!
