went to the mississippi river for three days, camping an boating, swimming, alote of fishing, cought 180 channel an flate head cat fish, the biggest was tweanty pounds was a blast, was great spending time with the family to,there was thirty of us on this beach all in tents, setting around the fire an talking about family when they where kids an me an my cousens sisters an the crazy things we did on the farm growing up,well now about how my diet is going, well I talked to my doctor about the diet an how I was going to stop taking my insulin.he said Its worth a shot an just keep my BS wrote down .well I think Im going to have to take my lantus up agine just a smaller dose,my Bs was 169 this morning an was 95 when I went to bed,I had a couple of lows over the weekend,it got down to 60's an 70's ,but other then that I feel great,It was hard sticking to a diet with all the food my family fixed but I dune the best that I could,I cooked my own meals, like black bean soup in a dotch oven cooked over a open fire,I love camping in tents, cooking outdoors like they did 100 years ago,but all I can say is im getting old or the ground is getting harder,

Hi Jimmuel, this sounds great, I love family get togethers. They're a blast! I also love fishing especially stream fishing with a spinner. My favorite catch is German brown, good eating and fresh from the stream! Fighters for sure! Good luck on your diet, doc is still working with my insulin and all the craziness that goes with it!

jimmuel 2012-05-31 12:56:44 -0500 Report

I've always wanted to go stream fishing or fly fishing an catch some trout, never tried trout so have to some day,an keep faith an you will get your insulin regulated an it will get alote better,I fish with spinner baits around here for bass an giant blue gale an slab crappie, our streams are to dirty from all the farm run off theres no fish, but we get crawfish for bait out of them,an bull frogs for frog legs, snapping turtles for turtle stew,an all the craziness well go away, stick to your diet an count your carbs,an a must exercise even for 15mins ,well make a differance,I dont mean to preach but it worked for me,I was on 2 to 3 shots a day now im insulin free for now anyway, the diets the hardest, but its a must to conquer this illness, but you will always be diabetic, but in control of it,an that feeling is worth a million dollars to me,im doing thing now that i havnt in three years, now just want to go back to work an earn a living agine,

Hi Jimmuel, wow all of this bait and different fish, you're way ahead of me! I am an amatuer, in comparison to you! I am a Type I and exercise, along with a very strict diet, very low carb! My antibodies are very high and could never be off of insulin! It's who I am now, I do my best to keep it in control, but there are still times when I look at the meter and I say, what, why?

The ground these days is so much harder, of course. I love being outdoors but have to have an air mattress thats thick like a regular mattress and an air pump to blow it up with. I have an insta dome tent that pops up in three minutes and it 12 x 12 with a six foot ceiling. It goes down as fast too. I admire your cooking efforts! You were a real trooper! I envy you that cat fish. I know you mentioned not liking fish but that was some good eating for someone!

jimmuel 2012-06-01 11:06:05 -0500 Report

pixsidust I was replying to another person an started to reread your reply,an your insta dome tent,I never herd of them,I have three dome tents one dig an two little, the big ones not as big as yours, where did you get it an was it expencise,,an i was taught how to cook an servive with out any mardern conveinances,my family alway joked that my dad was amish,i no he was a sevivor an tought me to be able to servive of the land, anyway Im with you on the air mattress now.my fathers going to role in his grave an call me all kinds of nasty names, but i will not go camping agine without one,

I miss our canoe trips we use to take the first weekend in June every year when we lived in Alaska. The trip was 26 miles down to Cook Inlet thru the wilderness, no cell phones, internet and very few people. It was always a great weekend.

Oh, I am so with you on camping. Also that the ground is getting harder, we had to resort to an air mattress. LOL.
That sounds like you had such a great time. There is nothing like being in the outdoors, talking and laughing around a camp fire. Did you eat your catfish?

jimmuel 2012-05-29 20:02:19 -0500 Report

your right gabby it the best time a person can have setting around a campfire with family an friends,Im going to invest in a air mattress,no I didnt eat any catfish,I dont like fish except for can tuna an can samon, cant get past the fishie taste of catfish, but everyone else did an we saved a cooler full for the next reunion,we have wienie roast three or four times a year to.I turned the 20 pounder lose they get a muddy taste that big,

GabbyPA 2012-05-30 08:05:13 -0500 Report

Yeah, the big ones are kind of murky, but I like catfish. It's the only fresh water fish besides Tilapia that I will eat. I love camping, but the heat down here makes it a fall and spring event. Hubby can't deal with the mosquitoes either, but we love doing it when we can.

jimmuel 2012-05-30 14:32:29 -0500 Report

my family love catfish an scored carp, bull heads to witch are a type of catfish they say the meat is sweeter, they all taste fishie to me,yuk blah, its gets hot hear to we have really high himidity an the temp gets into the high ninty's,as for misquitoes is use this bucket type of misquitoe repelent that you can get from walmart an it covers a area of 25 square feet, keeps black flies away to an nat's,I have battery operated fans for the tents,it was in the high nintys memorial weekend an the heat index was over a hundred we set records on heat, but I love to be outside an camping, fishing

I was just south of davenport,by lock an dam 17 around new boston,IL on a beach on the Iowa side of the river,Its hard to get at times but a couple of us went an got it erly in the morning,I've got family that live in oquwaka,IL,two of my uncles have house boats, theres no fun like staying on the river

Nick1962 2012-05-29 18:58:59 -0500 Report

So true! Most fun was watching the little ones faces as we went through the locks. Told them it was a giant bathtub and somebody would pull the plug.

Nick1962 2012-05-30 08:01:17 -0500 Report

Oh they had fun with it. We got wedged in with a coal freighter at L&D #10 at Guttenberg, IA and some of the crew threw down candy bars. When the lock finally drained and we were sitting at the bottom waiting for the gates to open, the freighter laid on it's horn and just shook our tiny boat. The kids all had goosebumps.

jimmuel 2012-05-30 14:36:52 -0500 Report

times like that makes the tripe all worth it,your kids will remember that for the rest of there lives, those horns are loud

Nick1962 2012-05-30 14:52:04 -0500 Report

they weren't mine, and they're all grown now, but they still talk about it. Once we got down to #14 or so we had a backup, so we could let them off and watch it from above. One of them is is the Army Corp of Engineers now.

I miss my regular camping in the Pacific Northwest too. You would think everyone in Hawaii camps, but there is such a large contingent of homeless who frequent the campgrounds that the rest of us do mostly day trips to the beach. Then come the three day weekends and the camp grounds are filled by LARGE family groups — the ohana — which camp together for the weekend.

Nick1962 2012-05-29 18:01:26 -0500 Report

It's just too darn hot here in summer. And we also have the large families on the long weekends, mostly nice folks. The last few weeks though I was tempted to go outr and buy a new tent - the evenings were perfect for sleeping outside.

That's great to hear Jimmuel! Glad you had such fun. I enjoyed tent camping when I was younger too, and yes, that ground does get hard!

jimmuel 2012-05-29 12:35:56 -0500 Report
