Summer is approaching us early, so I ask all who are exercising outside to please be careful. Drink you water and pace yourself. We as diabetics have to be extra careful. I look forward to hearing from everyone. I am inspired by those who have stuck with our group and I welcome those who want to join us. It is never too late to start getting into a healthier YOU. SO LET"S GET STARTED!!!!!!!!!

Managed to get my deep knee bends to 36 today with putting most of my weight on my right leg. My left foot is feeling better, but not good enough to get back on the treadmill yet. Tried a few other exercises, but putting too much pressure on my shoulder. This is one of those days I could use a stationary bike instead of the treadmill. Well, hopefully the foot will heal up fast.

A lot of us should use as a incentive. We sometimes complain and find reasons not to work out when there is nothing wrong with us. Look at you, even with a hurt you still push through. Way to go I admire you, but be carefull and don't over do it . It's ok to nurse the foot and exercise just be careful. God Bless and have a blessed day.

Forgot to check in last weekend but I got in 12 miles walking total, and then another 12 this week plus a lawn mowing for 1 1/5 hrs.

WOW! That's awesome.

Can you tell me how to calculate for miles. I'm curious to know if I'm walkinf miles or inches a day.

classof78 2012-06-02 11:15:36 -0500 Report

Well, I started walking at the local ice arena a few years ago. There is a big clock in the middle, and it's 7 laps /mile. I found that I could do a lap in 2 min. (14 minutes per mile, approx 4 1.2 mph) and that equaled 140 steps/ min. for me. this might be way too many steps per min. for some-I have kinda long legs. I just time my walks, and check my speed once in a while to be sure I'm on track. Also, according to the city, the distance around the lake is 1.1 miles.
The best way to start would be to find a place that has the length or route measured-think YMCA, the track at a local high school, or even mile markers on the road. Walk at your normal pace. count your steps for 15 seconds and take that times 4. Also keep track of your total time and total length of your walk. This will help you to know how far, and how long it took.
After a while you will have a feel for your individual speed, and will be able to judge your distance by the total time and your own speed.
Your height, overall health, heart, the weather, wind, distractions (look at that pretty bird!) and the flatness or incline of your route will all affect your time somewhat. Aim to go a little faster or a little longer each time or at least stay the same. Don't slow down or stop altogether!!!

Near my work there is a small lake with a walking trail around it. From the door to the lake , around twice, and back is 2 3/4 miles. (lots of baby geese right now) When it is raining/snowing/ or still too dark in the am, I walk in our warehouse. Boring, but I get my mileage in.

I am up to walking 1.5 miles in the morning and then again in the afternoon and play with some free weights a couple of times a week..I am seriously thinking after I drop another 10 lbs to teach myself how to jump rope..I don't know how these old knees will react to that..But it's a great cardio work out

Gambling 2012-06-01 20:22:35 -0500 Report

nice workout . Go easy on the jump rope to start maybe do on some padded mats or even on the lawn

Somoca 2012-06-01 20:05:16 -0500 Report

Old Biker, that is an awesome workout. You've been holdin' out on us, LOL. You and Mariantilibrarian will have to exchange notes on the knees.

I did my 30 minutes of circuit training this morning, then this afternoon cooled off by doing water aerobics in the pool and swimming with the grandson. Very hot out today, 105 @ 4:30 pm.

Somoca 2012-06-01 20:07:33 -0500 Report

105??? you could fry an egg on the sidewalk. Its nice that you had an alternate workout. BTW, I was told that having different kinds of workout helps lose weight and tone. It keeps the body guessing.

Two more miles down today ,on the treadmill. Two more tomorrow and finish the week off with ten miles total. Just kidding she is wonderfull and I am truly blessed. GOd Bless all of you and me you have good health and be well.

Hey, all of you got me motivated enough to get my deep knee bends done all week and as much as I could on the treadmill. Last night while I was working I injured my left foot! Now between the left foot and the right shoulder both being hurt, I am feeling a little limited on the movement I can do. Moving as much as I can though!
