Do you have a favorite condiment and if so, what is it? Do you have any creative ways in which you use it, for example, as a substitution for something else?

I have just recently acquired a taste for guacamole as a condiment on my hamburgers which I eat on english muffins instead of hamburger buns. Not a big fan of bread in general! My husband wasn't thrilled with this the first time I made it for dinner, but that's ok I still like it.

I don't think I have a favorite one. I like so many different ones on different things. But since the surgeon found 2 ulcers during the 1st hernia surgery I haven't been able to eat spicey ones or they bother my stomach.

I'm kind of on a spicy foods kick right now, so I've been putting hot sauce, curry powder or red pepper flakes in a lot of dishes. Feeling kind of like I'm torturing the family so I'll probably just add it to my own plate from here on out. With the exception of recipes that call for it in the ingredients.

Absolutely! I even use the unwhipped cream cheese. Pretzels are good w/the cream cheese too! I usually buy the light cream cheese. But as you said… can't do it too much.

Sounds great! I used t like to mix an envelope of taco seasoning mix into a tub of sour cream, add chopped jalapenos, and eat with tortilla chips :)

I add salsa to my sour cream for that kick with the chips. It is also very yummy on celery. Get the crunch without the carbs.

Salsa! On everything except ice cream. The hot & tasty type.

I don't know. With all the unusual ice cream flavors out there, maybe there is room for a cheddar cheese ice cream topped with salsa. LOL

I love coffee ice cream (unfortunately) I also like the chocolate covered beans. They should mix those two together for a caffeine fix like no other. LOL

My husband and a couple of friends took a mini road trip to New Hampshire and we snacked on chocolate covered espresso beans during the ride there and back. I'm not a fan of espresso but those beans were delicious.

I had a co-worker once who was kind of on the immature side. He was always helping himself to stuff. I had some and he thought they were chocolate covered raisins...I didn't stop him. It was worth the loss of those expensive little beans just to see his face. We all rolled in laughter.

OH I didnt know they were chocolate-covered; that probably wouldnt go well with salsa :0
On the other hand, EVERYTHING goes with coffee lol

my favorite condiment is catsup and use it in meatloaf, and on the weird side mashed potatoes (yes are reading right) and sometimes mac and cheese meatloaf as in the meat mixture before its cooked, also use oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs

well have to be sortof…my mom used to put oatmeal in the meatloaf because wouldnt eat oatmeal by itself when I was younger,,,,, so always use it that way, do like oatmeal now, get the gluten free kind…but do put shredded cheese in my mixture…also if you dont like olives, use the same meatloaf mix, put olive in and make like a meatball, bake it in the oven, tastes fantastic, only way will eat olives!!!

shortysmalls
shortysmalls 2012-05-26 00:05:24 -0500 Report

can use either one…like the green olives better like that than the blk ones…but baking them in the meat mixture and looking like a meatball makes the olives taste good and tolerable…make them at home sometimes around the holidays or just because lol

My husband thinks I'm weird because I put ketchup on my mac and cheese. I don't like it plain, what can I say. But it is full of sugar, so my goal this summer (once my tomatoes get ripe) is to find a way to make mine home made with truvia instead of sugar.

squog master

I imagine it would be kinda like putting stewed tomatoes on your mac & cheese. My Dad use to make the mac & cheese w/ diced or crushed tomatoes right in it.

i dont do much of the catsup on mac and cheese but do it once in awhile…like truvia and splenda instead of sugar, its good stuff

I use Greek Yougrt a lot. I don't use mayo or sour cream anymore so now I substitute greek yogurt. I make dips with it, I add spices to it and marinate chicken in it before broiling. Love it. I also use tons of spices and herbs in everything and I agree that garlic is a staple.

does greek yougart taste ok? asking cause never had it before…may try it instead of mayo

Jeanae
Jeanae 2012-05-26 07:03:19 -0500 Report

I like it. It tastes a little more tart than regular yogurt. I use it instead of mayo but it does not have that creamy, fattier taste like mayo so if you need to add herbs and spices to liven it up… My sister uses it and adds a half a pack of Stevia to off set the tart taste. I love it. I eat it with some berries for dessert. I grill fruit and add a little dollup on top. I also add it to my frittatas in the morning for added protein and it makes it fluffier.

ANYONE TRIED THE GREEN COFFEE BEAN EXTRACT AS SEEN ON DR OZ. ITS SUPPOSED TO PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS AND CLEANSE THE LIVER. AND ALSO SAW AN ARTICLE ABOUT CUTTING THE TOP OF THE STOMACHE AND IT CAUSED THE PERSON TO BE ABLE TO GET OFF INSULIN.

Since you are T1, Michael, you would not be able to get off insulin if you underwent that surgery.

And if I remember correctly, it only worked for 30% of T2s that they were able to eliminate or reduce their diabetes mellitus (DM) medications.

Is salsa a condiment? When tomatoes are in season, I make my own (pico de gallo, actually) and eat it on everything!

I used to love salsa, especially when it is HOT! Unfortunately can't do that any more due to it starting my bleeding ulcer up again. (DRAT!)

Just heard on Dr OZ thaht salsa is actually good for ulcers. I closes the whole!

jayabee52
jayabee52 2012-05-20 09:41:41 -0500 Report

I haven't used salsa for a while, but the tomato sauce I consumed recently started the ulcer bleeding again. I know that by the black tar-like stools I was expelling. So maybe Oz may be right (I disagree with much of what he says) but the cooked tomatoes in the salsa may open the hole again and I am already anemic as it is. I believe I will keep my own counsel on this issue.

Thanks for sharing!

I use an oriental chili paste which has no sugar, no carbs, chocked full of spicy flavor, and can be used on everything!! I even put it on my smoked sockeye salmon and grilled chicken breast to give flavor vs. sweet condiments. Also, mustard with the whole seeds in them…gives a crunchy texture to my food.

I love the chili paste also, or siracha (sp?) I also like hot gardinara (mixed peppers and vegetables) I also like to mix mayo with horseradish and mustard for dipping things like slices of roast beef, I will have to look for the mustard with seeds. I also eat alot of baked fish and like to make a low carb tartar sauce with mayo, sugar free relish, green onion, capers and sometimes a bit of jalepeno.

Wow Jay, you've got it bad with the kidney problems and the ulcer. Have you tried the Greek yogurt? I think it would soothe your ulcer a bit with the probiotics in it. You could also cut in some very finely sliced cucumber, a little sweet onion, lemon juice, some sea salt and herbs to taste like fresh basil or dill. Its great to put a tablespoon on top of fish such as cod filet.
