Winter Blues; How Do You Work Through Them?

I have no idea what to do this year; I usually work with crafts, afghans, sweaters, sewing clothes, and making my own decorations and gift bags and more. Now I am lucky if I can even hold anything in my hands. Maybe I will start drawing with my teeth, lol. Does anyone have any suggestions. What are you all going to do. I have not even been out shopping for more than 3 times this year.

I am trying hard, really hard, especially with the rain and sleet outside to come out of the blues yesterday and today, by just coming back and posting and reading on this site, although I have to say some things never change; people, too; We all have a right to our say so I guess if it can not be kept to themselves we just have to give up and ignore the mean and nasty replies. Or the winter will be bluer.

I find it was hard in the winter. I used to crochet a lot of things for people but my hands had hurt to much for all most a year. I miss it a lot. Cara

Maybe S little Holiday Snow and decorations outside will help us cheer up this time of year. Take a drive and see if you can see the city lights. Put up a little trees and play a little music, cause after the holidays for me, seems to be the greatest downe, so why not try to enjoy the days ahead, and take the most out of them

Well I have not found anything for volunteer services out of my home yet. I did buy sequins and styrofoam, ribbons and lots of little Christmas trees, now they are sitting in the living room; hopefully today I will try to get started, again. I absolutely despise messes, so it is either start real soon. or put away

Well if it snows I watch my husband snowboard if not I play on the computer and just try to keep body and mind occupied with something. I also start planning next years garden. If I don't keep my mind busy I go nuts.LOL

I guess it does help to try to have something to look forward too. I can think about that, cause one of my big problems is having nothing to look forward too do. I always had such high expectations of myself, and now I just can not commit to anything anymore.

Are their any volunteer services for this site that I can work from home. I really am sort of shut in cause of quality of life.

I don't know..If there isn't one…Call the American Red Cross or maybecall your local Armed service recruiting office. Try the boys and girls clubs, maybe the USO.Local churches are often in need of services that you can do from home ie putting together Sunday Bulletins Try Volunteers in service to America. They may be able to hook you up.There are a lot of people who would be greatful for your help..Change your focus and keep smileing.before you know it Spring will have sprung…Blessings

Yeah, I did look at the home page to see if there was anything posted there. Maybe I will contact John or Amy; see if there is anything I can volunteer to do from home.

I bake. I have baked for years and when I first found out I was diabetic, I figured my baking days were done. NO WAY!

There is nothing like the smell of baking breads and cookies. I give them as gifts and I know a lot of my friends would be very disappointed if I didn't bake for them. I find it very theraputic.

Besides, it is a great exercise! As long as I don't taste along the way. I have gotten much better about not doing that, thank goodness! LOL

You bake. I have been cleaning. Took down all the drapes and curtains and washed them. Washed all the comforters, even the puppy's. Today, I am going to clean the oven before I cook all the Thanksgiving stuff. I am alone most of the day so that is how I keep busy. I found a great chair I can sit in and do alot of stuff. It adjust high for the dishes and low for the oven. I can even sweep the floor in it.

That sounds great; I love to bake my gifts, and did all that heavy cleaning 2 weeks ago for graduation party, via, cane and wheelchair. I would love to know what kind of chair you are using tho. Can you tell me, mine is stable, and the foot drops are a pain.

Did you ever think about voluntering your time? There are a lot of great options out there. It's a great way to change your focus.Sometimes thats just what the winter "BLAHS" need.

I also forgot to add…If you can't get out there are some great things you can do from home…ie write letters to our service personel overseas..telephone shut-ins…some areas have telephone contact systems for latch-key kids who can't contact their parents after school.

OH what great ideas…I was a latch-key kid growing up, and that would have been great to be able to talk to someone when I first got home from school…I'm going to check in on that…Thanks!!!

It is cold again today, and I want so much to get out for just a little bit, it has been at least 2 weeks, because I have to depend on others', makes it worse this time of year. I miss seeing all the decorations and Christmas goings on. It always makes me feel better when I do.

I actually made something today; I got my new coffee pot, and it is a nice one that finally works the way I want it; and does not drip. But, it is a 14 cup Braun Commercial; and it needed cone size filters which it only came with 3 paper ones. Having being used to the refillable basket filters; I wanted one. Not wanted to wait for; decided I could make my own, also reusable, and washable. I made it out of muslim and lined it (or I should say them, because I have to be ahead on my coffed) and they work perfetly. I was so happy to have made something that works great for what i needed; takes up less space and is washable too. :->) Claudia; That was my big hurrah for today.

How neat. I would have never thought that was possible. I use cone filters for my coffee maker. I buy the brown ones and it makes the coffee taste better because the paper is not bleached white. Very creative of you!

2008-11-19 12:28:39 -0600 Report

Goofed tho' it is a cuisanart, and the size cone is bigger than the average, so I did not want to wait to order online through a commercial site, and the unbleached muslim works real well , and the coffee tastes great. I have always bought the cones, too, and the ones I have now don't fit, and the others are just basket shape and they don' t either. so I did the next best thing, and have an idea, because of it for personalized gifts I can do now. Thanks everyone

I just love this time of year, it makes me happy. I decorated my apartment last weekend. I did some crochet around plain old colored ornaments with a sort of doily pattern and I am making an afghan for my boss for Christmas. Next I am making my Mom a doily table topper. I like to keep busy.

maybe you could still do like gift baskets, like tea, candy or stuff that people like. That is what i make as gifts.

2008-11-22 05:48:11 -0600 Report

gifts baskets are a good idea; I could still manage to personalise it.

I make christmas ornaments out of strofoam balls and seguins. I burn lots of candles. I put up my Christmas tree on Thanksgiving and turn it on every night. It is uplifting to me.

That sounds so warm and cozy; Like it softens the mind and your mood. Great Idea; thanks

I just love to watch the lights. I put mine on blinking and I love how they reflect off the ornaments. With a holiday candle burning it is so Christmas and holiday feeling. That beats my blues anyday.
