Do any of you have problems with yeast infections or constipation? I know it is kind of embarrassing to talk about but I have a problem with both. I'm thinking my pain meds may cause the constipation but what about the yeast infections. Guys if you are reading this I warned you.

I had severe yeast infections when my Ketones were through the roof. This is urgent and nothing over the counter will help this problem. Get to the doctor. I was put in ICU because of this two different times.

I have been told more times than I could count that I get yeast infections due to being a diabetic. It always pisses me off when they say that but I guess the truth is irritating sometimes.

You know they say too many bubble baths for little girls causes yeast infections too, any of you that suffer from them take bubble baths? Like we women (especially married ones and ones with children have time to take a bubble bath lmao)
I'm lucky to be able to go pee in peace and we have 2 bathrooms!!!

I cant even remember the last time I had a bubble bath. But I have to admit it sounds good, lol.

I asked a question, like this, privately a while ago, but maybe someone here will know.

It is embarassing, but no matter what I try, lubricant, anything. It is so terrible painful to have intercourse, I can't stand it.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

Bjay 2009-01-30 14:20:13 -0600 Report

A really common cause of that in women with diabetes is a bacterial infection. Sometimes it can appear as a yeast infection, sometimes it's just inflammation in there. You might want to get checked - cause if that's what it is, you can treat it and feel a lot better.

rbergman 2009-01-30 14:23:58 -0600 Report

I don't have it all the time but sometimes things seem fine then its like rough grit sandpaper to continue, we use the KY lubricants and they have some really "special" ones out there now too lol, I agree its a personal issue but I also wondered about it myself, I always feel like everything ONLY happens to me sometimes lol…baby oil works in a pinch too and at least doesn't smell bad lol

Anngelia 2009-01-30 14:33:34 -0600 Report

I am so glad you posted that. I have had this same problem but had no idea who to ask about it. My Endo, PCP, Gyno??? I did ask the gyno about it and he just gave me the typical answers…more lube, more foreplay etc etc. Its really hard to get intimate with your spouse when you dont seem to have a desire anymore and when you do it is painful. Its really hard for my husband as well. When I make that gasping noise from pain it kills the mood dead for him. I wish there was a magical answer but I feel that the situation is hopeless.

rbergman 2009-01-30 14:41:36 -0600 Report

I did a little research, thank goodness for the internet at times lol anyway I got this from a site I was reading…

It may be a clinical sign of advanced diabetes, if have been diagnosed with diabetes earlier. Neurological reflex changes decrease vaginal lubrication. Here is the website for this information it covers a lot of different reasons for the dryness.
However it does not give any remedy for it either just how to prevent or try to prevent, maybe we should all get together and invent what we need lmao

Bjay 2009-01-30 15:05:31 -0600 Report

I would ask my gyno…but if yours hasn't been helpful, maybe ask the other two as well.

The most common cause is a bacterial infection - that happens because there's not enough "good bacteria" and the ph balance is off. Some people treat it with meds some even put plain yogurt down there to add back the good bacteria and correct the ph balance.

So maybe ask your gyno to test you for a vaginal bacterial infection, it's a little swab test.

It could also be the skin is thinning and extra dry if you are around menopause, and could use estrogen gel/cream or a hormone pill or patch. So if you are around menopause you can ask him about that too.

Anngelia 2009-01-31 01:16:39 -0600 Report

I asked my gyno about the problem because it has become so uncomfortable but he seems to think it is about being dry but I dont agree with that assesment. We did speak a little about menopause since I am 46. Neither one of us really thinks that is the problem but you never know. I think it is just becoming a trial and error process for me.

rbergman 2009-01-30 13:28:53 -0600 Report

Yeast infections constantly here too, high levels cause it from what I was told. Intimacy is practically non-existent here too, my husband doesn't understand and thinks I don't find him appealing anymore, I try to explain that with all the stress of my own Diabetes and all the testing on our daughter for all her conditions and not getting the answers has a lot to do with it but he feels neglected too. I felt so sorry for him that the other day I treated him to a special lunch hour when he came in from feeding the cattle. But the next day my moods were less than appealing to him, they should have a support group for spouses of Diabetics for all they have to do to put up with our constant changes lol

Bjay 2009-01-30 13:10:44 -0600 Report

Hope you feel better soon!

Yeast infections and bacterial infections "down there" are common. Lucky us, eh? haha

Could be your sugar levels are running a little higher or your hormonal and ph levels are out of whack.

Yeast infections and bacterial infections can feel really similar, but need different treatment - so be sure and see your doctor to make sure which one it is.

As far as constipation, some of the diabetes meds, like metformin, you need to drink extra water.

Also if you are cutting back on carbs, you may be cutting back on complex fibery carbs too and that's needed in your plumbing.

Back to yeast infections…that's how I finally got diagnosed with diabetes. I had been going to see my doctor for recurrent yeast infections. I was in every week for months!

Finally one day the doctor was out, and there was a Mexican nurse practitioner on duty. He had been a doctor in Mexico. He took one look at me and asked if I had diabetes. I assume he asked because of my typical type 2 body shape. I said NO! Then he asked to look at my yeast infection.

He was very quiet for a moment, looked at me, and patted my hand sadly, and said, "I'm so sorry mejita, but I think you have diabetes." I was like, WHAT? He said he would send me for a lab, but he was 99% sure. So I went for a lab, and he was right. :(

I get yeast infections when my b/s is high. BUT, this is not just a woman thing; I remember my father getting bad yeast and fungal infections from his diabetes. As for the constipation, most of the drugs I am on can cause that. Check the side effects of what you are on. This is a good topic.

I had this problem really bad when I was first diagnoised with diabetes because my blood sugar was so high and we hadn't found the right dose for me so I delt with that and the pain for about two months so if I were you I would check my blood sugar more and talk to my doctor about it.

The Dr. give me Loprox 0.77% cream. I've been using this for over 5 years and it works wonderfully in two to three days it is all gone. Cara

I use Vagisill powder in all my private areas and under my breast and armpits. I do not sweat much and it works fine for me. I eat alot of yogurt so yeast infections are not bad for me. But i also take alot of pain meds and do have the constipation problem. My doctor told me to get some DulCoLax for those times. It works fast and no cramping or sudden urges.

Lanore and all the ladies here,

I went online and did some research for prevention of yeast infections…in addition to eating the yogart here are a few things I found…

1. Keeping your bg levels in control is the most important part…
2. Wear lose clothing, and cotton crotched underwear, also do not sit around in wet clothes including a swim suit.
3. Since it is not uncommon for men to transfer yeast to a woman during sex, it is wise to shower or bathe right after if you seem to be getting them after you have intercourse with your partner.
4. Early interception is also a must. Contact your doctor right away if an over the counter medication does not get rid of the infection…

I hope this helps everyone, for this can be a hard thing to go thru…

Thank you Sparkysmom I have wanted to bring up this issue and really didn't know how to becuase of all the guys here. It is a very embarassing promlem.
I have this problem all the time and just don't know how to get raid of them. I had one this time that lasted 10 months…with a Dr help and nothing works to get raid of it. I have tried yogurt, the pill and otc creams nothing helped. What i would really like to know is how to prevent them before they start. Thanks again and I hope we can get an answer to this.
Finally after about three weeks of takeing the pill for Y/F i have gotten raid of it. Lanore ;-)

Wow, at least you got rid of it Lanore…I can't imagine having one for 10 months…what kind of pill did the doctor put you on??

Lanore 2008-11-17 12:06:49 -0600 Report

Hi Vicki,
Not sure of spelling but it was diflacan. I get them (Y/F) all the time. Drives me crazy!! I am glad someone asked…Lanore ;-)

vgarrison 2008-11-18 11:28:46 -0600 Report

I've used diflucan before, but you would think there was something stronger to help, but hey I'm not a doctor…

Lanore 2008-11-18 12:16:15 -0600 Report

Hi Vicki,
What I would really like to know is beside yogurt what else can be done to prevent them from happening?? I am not sure there is anything. I have tried yogurt and like it but i do get a little tried of eating it. Prevention would be nice…Lanore ;-)

vgarrison 2008-11-16 13:41:06 -0600 Report

When I was admitted into the hospital with my bg level at 618, one of the first things the doctor asked me was if I had a yeast infection that I could not get rid of…my response was YES!!!

Diabetics have more yeast in their bodies when their numbers are not under strict control…It's not contained to the "area" down there. Because of the fact that I am overweight I get small boils on my waistline…they look like pimples but my doctor told me they are considered boils, because boils are also caused by too much yeast in our bodies…there are of course meds for all of this, but the best preventative thing you can do is eat yogart…I still eat the yoplait fruit ones, and just add it into my daily carb allowance, and so far no more yeast infections…I still have the boils, but Phisoderm makes a great body wash for that…my doctor also recommended that.

I hope this helps, because it can get irritating to say the least to constantly have a yeast infection…

The constipation is more than likely caused by the meds, my father takes about 30 meds a day and one of them is a low dose laxitive, because of all the other meds…

Good Luck

vgarrison 2008-11-16 13:50:33 -0600 Report

I forgot to mention, that if we have a yeast infection and dont realise it and we do have "relations" with our partners, then they can actually give it back to us in the future…Men can carry the yeast infections for a while and not realise it, it can end up being a back and forth thing, and never know where it came from.

2008-11-16 11:43:13 -0600 Report

I just had to find some help with the constipation after my recent surgery. Raisin Bran with an extra handful of raisins or some prunes. I know they are higher carb than we usually would eat but they work and it's not like you need to eat them all the time. Also the Organic Apple Cider Vinegar cocktail twice a day should help for both. I buy the organic apple cider vinegar with the 'mother' in it and mixed with warm distilled water and a little blue agave nectar (so it's drinkable) twice a day seems to be improving all my bodily functions!! Good Luck

wow! i'm glad i read this. i think i have a yeast infection in my belly button. anyone ever hear of such a thing?

vgarrison 2008-11-16 13:43:22 -0600 Report

Yep, I have gotten one there too. I have a very deep inny belly buttun…I can take a cutip and put it in more than halfway before it stops…LOL…I wash mine out with hydrogen peroxide after every shower, because the water getting trapped in there can cause the yeast infection as well as just having more yeast in our bodies…

Good Luck

Ok after reading everyone elses posts I decided to go ahead and share this. Get ready because this will sounds crazy but it works. My sister told me years ago to douche with plain yogurt. My gyno thought it sounded like a good idea. Nothin else seemed to be working, but that did. My BGs werent that bad either. I think it just plain has something to do with being a diabetic and luck of the draw.

Anonymous 2011-10-24 07:06:06 -0500 Report

You can also douche with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. The vinegar is the same acidic level and will kill the yeast infection. I have been doing this for yrs and it works.

I also had yeast infections prior to getting my blood sugars under control.

Constipation happens occasionally, usually when I don't eat enough fiber, and sometimes even when I do - and that's usually because I haven't had enough fluids to drink.

caspersmama 2008-11-16 08:27:48 -0600 Report

Yes fluids are important too.But the right ones. That is why I stay away from sodas except to raise my sugars when I have a low. except coffee in the mornings I drink decaf unsweet tea and crystal lights. But I always have something to drink beside me. the doc says it helps to remove the sugar too, especially when I was high.

Ms.Green 2008-11-15 21:40:37 -0600 Report

I get yeast infections quite frequently. It is in fact, due to my bs levels. I NEVER got them before I was diagnosed. I usually am prescribed diflucan and it's only one pill. Also, pain killers will give you constipation. I just had some and it has the warning on the information from the pharmicist. You just have to take laxatives while you're on it. Ask your doctor about it- they should be able to tell you more about what to use.

caspersmama 2008-11-16 08:29:20 -0600 Report

I take over the counter Ducolax for the constipation if it is really bad. It is safe, but ask your doctor or pharmacist what he thinks.

I was having yeast infections just before I was dx. Once I start my meds they went away and haven't come back. that's how I was dx. I had 3x's the amount of sugar in my urine than I was supposed to why I went to the gyno for the yeast infections. She wouldn't treat me for the yeast infection until I got the diabetes undercontrol. I found a family doctor and the next week I was on my meds and the infections were gone. I do think the constipation is from the pain meds. It happens to me all the time when I take those kinds of meds.

I will have to look, but I seem to recall that high sugar levels can contribute to yeast infections. The other issue is usually an imbalance in your menu. More fiber can help with that, and I don't mean in a pill. More whole grains, fresh veggies and today I learned that Okra is good for that, with less irritation.
I know if I have too much iron in my system, I get constipated, but that is not a normal way to be.

A nurse years ago once told me that after showering or bathing, always use a blow dryer on a cool setting to dry all areas of the body, such as in the folds down there and under the breasts, in between toes. This promotes a dry area where bacteria have a harder time growing you see. It has worked for me all these years, and also to use special non drying soap or wash which can destroy PH levels and can cause infections.
