I am on metformin 750 2x a day(breakfast and dinner), but sometimes after lunch my bs is over 200 2 hours after eating. It does it without warning. It happen once after eating a grilled shrimp salad with no dressing. Makes no since. It doesn't happen a lot ,but it got me wondering what I can do to lower my blood sugar without rushing to a doctor. I am home with two small children all day and I don't want to put them in danger because I'm not prepared for a bs crisis. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Update. Talked to my doc and she added glipizide xl 5mg to my regimen in hopes that would eliminate the highs, but she also gave me a script for humalog kwikpen with instructions on how much to take at what bg reading.

When my BG goes high or needs to come down I eat some protein such as an hard boiled egg, string cheese, etc.

I take other things in addition to metformin but nothing that immediately lowers my bs. My doctor and diabetes educator both suggested taking a little walk if my bs gets a little high. I also take cinnamon capsules 1000 mg twice a day and found that taking it on a regular does help. I don't think it is a quick fix though. s with any supplement you have to give it time to work. If you have an hour lunch try eating and then walking for the last 30 minutes. It should help.

Hi, I just wanted to say that the same thing happens to me. I am on metformim also and have been for 2 years. It's a good med. Your okay though when on metformim except for the common side effects of diarriah. I wouldn't panic though. 200 is not good, but you can lower that by using cinnamon tablets or sprinkle it on your foods or coffee. That helps the levels to get down. Also walking is the best thing. You can about 20 minutes a day, or swimming to. Some type of exercise is good to keeping down blood sugar.
