I do not gain weight anywhere else but my stomach. Exercise is a problem for me because I suffer with arthritis and spinal stenosis including weakness of the legs. I try to walk and that is also a problem because of pain in my lower back, hip and numbness in my legs. What can I do for a substitute to walking? Why my stomach is expanding? I should mention that I try to maintain a good diet.

Hey eltigre - I too have had that problem for some of the same reasons - need to lose weight and have arthritis as well as COPD and other stuff. I have been in physical therapy since last October, the first 3 - 4 months totally in the pool - Aqua Therapy. It has really helped me a lot both in beginning to lose some weight, albeit slowly, as well as reducing my pain to the point where I have been able to begin slowly to work in the gym part of the PT department. It has also allowed me to become more involved in things here at home including cleaning - even that little bit was difficult if not impossible for some time before, gardening - again not possible before and I love it, and even taking a short walk in the evenings with my husband - could barely walk from the front porch to the end of our driveway before.

I too have done my best to maintain a healthy diet though I do include some healthy snacks in my routine or I suffer some really horrid low BG levels (have been known to go as low as the high 20's tho generally not lower than about 45) that can put me totally down for several hours if not the rest of the day because they take a lot out of me. f

Regardless of what direction you decide to go with your attempt to lose that weight, talk it over with your doctor and get his/her guidance and approval. I have found this much easier by working closely with my doctor.

GL & HUGS to ya

Howdy eltigre! WELCOME to DiabeticConnect!

You say you maintain a good diet. Please define a good diet?

There are seated exercises one could do. Look here ~ http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts... and here ~ http://www.livestrong.com/article/19180-seate... and here ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0hTmS9h4gM (there are other viesos on the right too)

I pray these are helpful to you.

Blessings to you and yours

James Baker

Thank you, Mr. Baker, for your response.

In the mornings, I have a small bowl of cereal with unsweetened almond milk and an egg or sardines. I do not eat in between meals.

Lunch: a salad with fish, sardine or chicken and couple slices of goat cheese with a slice of whole grain bread or a half cup of brown rice. Water or tea is my liquid. I do not have juices anymore. I do not drink sodas or alcohol even before I had diabetes.

Dinner: I have mixed vegetable with fish or chicken and goat cheese. I use spices and extra virgin olive oil - sometimes a little coconut oil. I seldom have pasta.
I drink lots of water during the day and tea in between.

May God continue to bless you, Benjamin Kellyman
