As some of you are aware, I have lived with type II diabetes for about 18 years. I recently ( about 2 or 3 months ago) stopped taking Actos after researching the available info concerning bladder cancer. My BG started to run higher, and I experienced uncomfortable spikes that did not exist prior to eliminating the Actos. This resulted in my endocrinologist increasing my dosage of metformin from 500mg twice per day to 1000mg twice per day. As it turns out, I can't handle that size dosage of Met, so I cut back to the original dosage of 500mg twice per day. My BG was still running higher then I like, and I was experiencing an occasional spike above the 180 mark. That is totally unaccetptable to me. One other point, I do not care for the only choices of medications that are now available to me. Some I tried in the past with bad side effects, some no longer work, and some I prefer not to mess with. I do take Lantus, but additional insulin means potential weight gain and that is counter productive and a struggle I hope to avoid..

As I have many times in the past, I felt compelled to take matters in to my own hands in a responsible manner of course! I continue to see my endo, and dietician. I felt as if I was between a hard rock and a stone! Obviously, of most importance, was getting my bg back under control as quickly as possible. I have managed to do this since I was first diagnosed and up till now.
Over the years, I tried more supplements that supposedly controlled or helped to control BG then I can remember. Some appeared to work, some didn't and some I was not sure about. Years ago I also controlled my diabetes with nothing but a low carb diet and exercise. Since my BG was in normal range most of the time, it was difficult to tell if certain supplements had any effect.

So this is how I have solved my dilemma so far! I cut my carbs a bit more, and increased my exercise routine slightly. This helped, but still not good enough. Obviously, I need to be able to eat enough healthy foods to get the necessary nutrion needed to stay healthy with good BG #s. At this point, 1/2 of a small apple, or even a few strawberries would send my bg soaring to 160 or even higher.
Well, I added two more ingredients. I started taking Cinnamon with Chromium caps, and Aloe Vera. I was skeptical about the Cinnamon and Chromium because years ago I tried it with no apparent results. I had no actual experience with Aloe Vera, and didnt expect any miracles. On the other hand I had nothing to lose.

It has been about two weeks since I started taking Aloe and the Cinnamon/Chromium caps. My Bg has been typically running between 90—100 and ocasionally a few points above 100 or below 90. Two hours after a meal my BG high is averaging 120—130 max, and drops back to the 90s within an hour or so. This is by far the best #s I have seen in years. If this continues, I expect to see my a1c drop down below 6.0 for the first time since my diagnosis 18 years ago. Of course it's only been a couple of weeks, so we'll see for sure with more time. I got a gallon bottle of Aloe also!!!
I am not sure to what extent the Aloe or Cinnamon/Chromium caps are working at this point. I do know that my BG is the best I can remember seeing in years.

How much aloe do you take? I would love to try this. The Cinnamon/Chromium did nothing for me. Plus my husband has bad intestinal junk since coming back from overseas, so would love to see him try aloe for that. Thank you!

I am taking 2 ounces in the morning, just before breakfast. My wife is using it for digestive purposes (2 ounces also), but she just started recently so no input from her as of yet. So far it appears to work well on my bg. If I didn't exercise, and have a good food plan also, it would probably be difficult to see the positive effect that Aloe is having. If you and your husband try it, I hope you will update us as to how it is working!

Hi I hope the Aloe works for you, I am not sure if you have tried taking "Diamicron"
I was put on these tabs when I was diagnosed type 2 last year and they worked very well and I recommended them to my friend in Canada and his Dr prescribed them for him and his suger levels seem to be under better control now than ever before.
What I must add also is that during the period I was taking them I did not experience any side effects like what I hear about other ones.
I am offcourse off the tabs and now control my diabetes with exercise and diet and my BG remains withinn normal levels.
I thought that you may want to try the "Diamicron" if you have not taken them before.
best regards and all the best

Thankyou Natim! I have heard of Diamicron, but I know little about it. I will definitely check into it.
Congratulations on managing your bg without meds. That is always a very worthy accomplishment!

Al, with you knowing my bg averages, at least I hope you remember our conversation about it, do you think I should be using this? Also, with the pain I've been having with eating, would this Aloe juice help me? Also, does the Chromium have Piloricate in it?

Only you can decide if you want to try Aloe. I really don't know if it would help you or not. It does have some soothing effects on various forms of inflammation internally and externally.
Now about Picolinate, I am well aware of the neg info and articles about it. There are also studies, info, and professional opinions that counters the neg. There is also neg info on cinnamon for that matter. And no, there is no picolinate in the chromium that I take. It is chelated, which makes it easier to absorb.

Glad you ended up ok ! Many years ago my neighbor was stung by a bee, and her throat closed up and her tongue swelled from an allergic reaction. She was unable to breathe and she died on the way to the hospital.
Besides, it's great having you around!!!

Aww…that's too bad about your neighbor, Al. When I got the the minor e.r. building, the doc said my adrelaline (sp?) had take over and I was pretty much ok after that. Sure did scare me, tho. You sure about your last sentence? Maybe you should review your messages to me and from me.

Great control…congrats. You know what they say…if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Think twice about pushing your A1c below 6…it may cost you some abnormally low sugars (which has been my problem—which can be very dangerous). Any number in the 6's is acceptable these days. My dad is Type 2 and on Lantus. I believe that insulin is a better solution to controlling Type 2 diabetics than all the other meds. Anyway, good luck.

jigsaw
jigsaw 2012-04-15 14:34:31 -0500 Report

Thanks for your concern MoeGig! Actually, I am not disatisfied with my a1c in anyway. In 18 years, I've only had one serious low, and that was when I accidently double dosed on Lantus. I realize there is always possibilities and changes possible, and a first for everything. As far as insulin is concerned, the only thing I dislike about it is it can cause weight gain. I would not hesitate to increase my dosage if it becomes necessary and my endo recommends it.
Have you pinpointed the cause of your lows? This could possibly help many.

lacat87
lacat87 2012-04-16 13:16:11 -0500 Report

I wish my Lantus gave me weight gain. It's just as horrible and depressing to be under weight as it is to be over weight. I know because I've also been over weight for a period of time, but wasn't diabetic at the time. Just came back from mall looking for dress pants to wear for our trip to MD. And it was so frustrating and depressing.

MoeGig
MoeGig 2012-04-15 16:02:21 -0500 Report

The main cause after all these years is that your adrenal gland is tired of telling you you're low. In addition, I was so aggressive in keeping my BG down I aimed too low…and was erring on the low side. The main problem now is going low overnight…I have solved that by setting an alarm to wake up around 2:30 am every night to check the BG. If it's below 100 at that time, I drink 1/2 or whole gingerale to bump it back up before it drops so low my wife ends up calling 911. On your other topic, additional insulin won't cause weight gain unless you "eat up to it" which, I sure, we've all done. The key is keeping the BG normal.

Thanks MoeGig! You have a few good points, that just might be helpful to a few members. I do remember you mentioning the alarm clock on another discussion. Good idea ! If it works for you, then it's a great idea!!
I believe your correct about the insulin. I started to gain weight when I first started taking it. Fortunately I nipped it in the bud with good portion control!
Now for the more important stuff ! Is that your what appears to be a sailboat that I see you cruising on? Do you strictly cruise, or do you fish also? Yep, I admit I'm a bit nosey, but mostly curious

Ive been using a premium organic brand since August; dont think its lowering my BG but Im T1 so…I do like the other benefits of using aloe vera juice.

Ive used the 100% gel on my hands and feet before bed for years and imo it is as effective as petroleum jelly for softening, and less mess.

lol !! A heads up: when you rub it in, it dries and there is no mess. It forms a barrier on your skin while moisturizing it but next time your hands/feet get wet, you will feel the gel rinsing away. This is why I keep it on my nightstand and use it at bedtime so it can work its magic all night. Please do be careful stepping in shower—I dont want you to hurt your big, tough, and macho self ;)

So it mine, for the past 5 months. I just can't believe it sometimes. I have used cinnamon and Chromium from the start, however the Aloe Vera was added when I was going over 100 every day for two weeks. My A1c went from 5.8 to 5.5 in three months. I buy a gallon of Georges at the health food store. It is tasteless so I don't have to add anything to it. My husband is also using it for acid reflux/heartburn and has improved dramatically. From what I have read, it heals the whole digestive tract. I have also read an article recently that perhaps diabetes (type 2 of coarse) may be related to the intestine and its inability to retrieve nutriants needed in the body. I do think allot of this is due to the unatural ingrediants in processed foods and beverages. I do know it has worked for me. Sticking with it. I have never taken meds for type 2 and am trying to keep it that way through diet, exercise and helpful suppliments.

The more I use Aloe, the more confidence I am developing. I've been kind of waiting for the rise in bg, especially since I cut a substantial amount of medications. Well Sandra, instead of rising, my bg has become more stable and is running lower then usual. I've read that the full effect of Aloe on bg takes about two weeks. I am just about at that crossroad now. The results seem to be improving as far as bg is concerned. I am tremendously enthused and impressed so far.

I did read a few articles that mentioned the possibility of diabetes being related to the inability of the intestines to function properly. Seems like there may be quite a bit of merit to this.

My wife is using it for digestive purposes, but only started more recently, so we'll see in time.

You know, I'm beginning to think that you just might have a great chance at never needing meds. Those are not words that come from my mouth to easily. I have known that it was possible, but not likely for most PWD. So the movement continues!!

My God, I hope you are right. I wish everyone that is pre and type 2 could make the changes that I made. I was a bit of a maniac, ask anyone in my familiy or work. I just want to help people so they won't have to rely on meds that many times cause more harm. I know they do keep people in check with their BG, but maybe it depends on how long you have this disease and how you go about treating it. I choose the foods and suppliments. I was so afraid of meds. I have never reacted well to medications. If we all keep trucking and stick together, we may be able to help so many more people find a better path to treat this monster. Thank you for your post. I am so happy for you and that you tried the Aloe Vera. I couldn't believe my own BG levels after using it. So stupid, it was in the book and I just passed over it. I guess I was trying so many other things that it went to the bottom of the list. We are all going to be ok. We just need to let each other know when we are on to something good. It may not work for everyone. I think it is a combination of things that really make us successful.
Have a great weekend

Set Apart, I just got off about a 5 year stint with Novolog. Doc put me back on "APIDRA" to supplement my "LEVIMIR". The Apidra works MUCH faster, and it takes less to get you where you are supposed to be with your BG. Check with your Doc, and give it a whirl, I have NO side effects of any kind, I used it before the Novolog, and glad to be back on it. Jon Jon the Pipers Sun

Thank you, will have to dr. I am still very sensitive to insulin does this ever go away. Dr. Says I have up to one year on what he calls the honeymoon phase, is that still what happens? For example yesterday prior to dinner, BG was at 157 had some snacks prior to that and planned for my carbs, so took 2 units novolog had approximately 35 carbs per dinner then 1 hour later BG was at 82 and dropping, any ideas as to what I did wrong? Sorry to ask so many questions, seem to be afraid of the novolog anymore, if I take more then 1 unit look out I better be re day to eat. I don't want to over eat or have to carb up!

Hi jigsaw, I think I may try this maybe the chromium and cinnamon supplements first before the Aloe. I've had some spikes lately and have tried to stay only on Lantus, but there are days where I need my novolog and I hate it because it makes me feel horrible and then at times I end up with a headache or a low. I take other supplements when do you take yours? Thank you for all of this info.

jigsaw 2012-04-13 08:50:44 -0500 Report

You're very welcome! I take the Cinnamon/Chromium caps two times per day. Once in the morning before breakfast, and once in the eve at dinner time. I take only two ounces of Aloe in the morning before breakfast. So far the results have been very good and consistent for a few weeks now. Keep trying to find the answer to your situation. I sincerely believe and feel very strongly that you can eliminate or at least cut down on the lows and spikes. Trial and error often works in the long run. If you try the Cinnamon/Chromium caps, and or the Aloe, I hope you have success.

Out of curiosity, have you tried adjusting the amount of Novolog or Lantus. If you have, did it help at all? My endo said it was perfectly ok to adjust up or down slightly and in 1 unit increments. I actually and gradually came down from the original and recommended dose, and it helped me.

I have tried to adjust both insulins, Lantus is now at 21 units for 1 day. I take 11 in the morning and 10 units 12 hrs later. Was starting to spike, it's the novolog I can't control, I either seem to take too much or not enough. My sliding scale is now at 1 to 30. Lately I am on a constant roller coaster. I'm afraid this craziness will affect my next A1 c negatively well see, but all of this helps! :-)

That is a good thing! When I get frustrated, or frustrated to the point of feeling depressed, or even sorry for myself, it doesn't last very long. The reason, I have FEROCITY !!! The combination of a positive attitude, a strong belief that there is an answer, and ferocity has pulled me through many times. This is especially true when it seemed like everyone else felt there was no way to solve a health issue.

An example (not about bg) that I will never forget involves my triglycerides. About 20 years ago I took a blood test that determined my triglycerides to be 750. My HDL was 20. That is a deadly combination of characteristics. I went to numerous doctors, and they all said the same thing. It's genetic and even with meds, you will not get your #s below 400. I refused to believe it. I researched, altered my eating habits, started an exercise routine, and did not take the recommended meds. 9 mos later, my triglycerides were 80, and HDL were within normal range. My doctors mouth has been hanging open ever since.

I have accomplished similar results over the years with my bg. Many times I almost thought I reached a dead end when my bg started climbing. That is really the core of this discussion. Once again I have found something that is working!
