To friend someone, go to their profile page(click on their name) and hit the follow link and wait for them to follow you back. You don't do it in the discussion posts.

Yes, there are alot of type 1 diabetics here of all ages. Maybe one day they will find a cure, but they have to figure out what causes it first. Until then, you have to do the work to keep it under control at all times so as to be as healthy as you can be.

Hi. I have had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 11. I am now 58. So I have lived with the disease for 47 years. I have a lot of lows but it has allowed me to keep all my appendages and I am functioning well mentally. I hope you are doing well. I am also on Yahoo Messenger. God bless you and I hope your Easter was joyful.

Hey there, my daughter has diabetes now going on 4 years since diagnosis. My mom was hypoglycemic and her brother diabetic. Our family has dealt with it for years. There is no cure yet, maybe they will come out with a mechanical pancreas in the future.

margokittycat 2012-04-08 16:36:41 -0500 Report

Melissa 1987, Hello and how are you? I am type 1 and have been for 32+ years. The stem cell is one thing they are working on, but in other areas there is one group working on a prstetic pancreas, that is in testing. They say it is to memic your real pancreaus and produce the insulin. That would be cool, I know in the past they had tried transplanting pigs pancreas's in people but that di not work out well at all.

melissa1987 2012-04-08 20:14:14 -0500 Report

Sounds good I hope it happens in my life time… I just hear story's that the government is not doing anything about diabetics because of the money cost that there making n it made me think it could be true because the meds r very expensive

Caroltoo 2012-04-08 11:13:02 -0500 Report

They are still working on finding a cure. As Roshy said yesterday, stem cell research looks promising. Someone also is working on an artificial pancreas. Good motivation to take care of ourselves now, so we can be helped by these new things as they become available.

When I read that, I thought you were the 24 year old it referred to. My oops, I guess.

melissa1987 2012-04-08 12:17:31 -0500 Report

That's good news!!!

Caroltoo 2012-04-08 12:26:25 -0500 Report

It really is! It's not going to happen today, but knowing it's in process is very encouraging to me. Personally, I think stem cell research probably has the best chance, and that will probably come from Great Britain or Canada because of the severe restrictions that we have on cell stem lines here in the U.S.

This is the one thing i really hate about this condition. . . . . .. . for all the great medical advances we have achieved in relation to diabetes, all the treatments, knowledge, understanding, technology we have come up with over the years, why is it we have not yet managed to deal with the psycological and emotional side of it???? there is no proper, productive or constructive way in helping young adults, teens, pre teens, parents and adults deal with the condition on an emotional level. there should be a place where someone can go like a specialised counselllor or a key worker or support worker who should be able to help someone deal with diabetes emotionaly because its a problem that is only going to get worse.

When i was 16 i struggled coping with it. It wasnt the needles or blood sugar testing, it was the fact you feel so alone and it is your sole responsability to get yourself through it and if you dont then you alone will suffer the consequences, along with your family and friends who can only try and understand with what your dealing with. why is it still left to the individual to deal with the emotional components of diabetes?? society and the health services need to start addressing these aspects i think!!!

we can come up with a way to measure BS levels through tatoos bu tyet we cant come up with a way to help people emotionaly with the condition????

Sounds like you're having a tough time. Have been Type 1 for 46 years, and the only thing I can say is that the disease doesn't care how you feel. If you follow the rules, you can have a great life physically…if you don't, it will be total misery. Some days I'm depressed about life, testing, shots, diet, etc…it's continuous, but the cost of not paying attention is very high…and really not worth it. You have to do what it takes to follow the rules…regardless how you might feel otherwise. Best wishes.

Hi, Melissa: I'm really glad to see you have met Roshy. She is a delightful person and Type 1 like you. Like Tom said, there are many of us who do care about you and hope you will work your way out of this down time in your life. As Roshy suggested, there are so many good things ahead for you in life once you get through this tough time. You know you can always email me also. Carol

Thanks Carol .. It really does help to have someone to talk too and yes I'm glad I met roshy .. She's really nice n down to earth n helpful . The depression just comes and goes its so hard then I make these letters for my family then it passes I don't know what's wrong with me . I just hope the medication the doctor gave me kicks in so I don't have to feel like this. I feel like a fool I tell my father and I don't do but at the time I really am planing on it.

roshy 2012-04-07 22:33:05 -0500 Report

when my sugars were continously high i felt hopeless. . .. no energy, my mood was dead my peronality vanished . . . . is there a diabetic nurse near you ?? they are often very good when it comes to listening . and sometimes thats all it takes to feel better, someone to actually shut up and listen to you.

Caroltoo 2012-04-07 22:19:51 -0500 Report

If your meds aren't working by 4 weeks, call your doctor and let him know. There are lots on the market. They work in different ways and it's really hard sometimes to get the right one. When I used one for six months, I lucked out and got the right one the first time. I've know people who have had to try 6 before they found the right one. Don't give up on it. There is something there that will help you.

You sound like you are doing your part with the exercises to help w/BG control. That's good. How are you doing with your choices of healthy foods? That and lack of D3 sometimes also contribute to depression.

melissa1987 2012-04-07 23:02:23 -0500 Report

Honestly I just eat whatever because my parents can't afford n I can't afford a special diet .. Can't u buy D3 pills?

Caroltoo 2012-04-07 23:14:45 -0500 Report

Not really a special diet, just try to eat more veggies and fruit when they are available and less bread, potatoes, and pizza.

That's just reducing some of the big time BG spikers and still filling your tummy with lots of fiber filled foods that also help keep your BGs in line.

If you just keep this in mind when you are using what's around the house, it just helps you make more BG friendly choices of what is there.

Caroltoo 2012-04-07 23:11:08 -0500 Report

You can get D3 without an Rx either online or at a pharmacy or perhaps a well stocked grocery store. For depression, start with 2,000 iu morning and evening. As the days get sunnier and you begin to feel less depressed, you could cut back to one tablet per day.

melissa1987 2012-04-07 23:13:35 -0500 Report

Ya I thought I seen them at the grocery store. I am gonna check with the Parmacy and see which ones to get because I hate feeling like this… Thanks a lot guys for the talk

piekiels 2012-04-09 20:59:21 -0500 Report

Are you asking about D-3 vitamins? You can find them at the pharmacy in the vitamin section. I have found Walmart has the best variety. I have been on an insulin pump for about 1 1/2 years and I have given myself over 50,000 shots in my lifetime. I hope your life is a happy one. Although this is a dreadful disease we may achieve some happiness and good days. God bless you and may you find what you need

melissa1987 2012-04-07 21:04:21 -0500 Report

I don't like venting on here because some people r really rude but I don't care right now who says what… I'm getting a Hugh urge to shoot myself up with insulin because I'm so depressed n I feel like I'm not going anywheres in life

roshy 2012-04-07 21:17:37 -0500 Report

melissa, insulin isnt a weapon dude, its a gift. You need to address this in a different way. are you feeling depressed because of diabetes or is it something else???

melissa1987 2012-04-07 21:29:57 -0500 Report

It's a lot of things going on in my life right now n just can't handle it anymore. I feel so lost… My life went to hell about 3 years ago when I was charged with something that I did not do and I lost my job , my license n my car, went out with a lot of woman beaters and my parents just look at as a disappointment then I found out I was a type 1 diabetic not to mention I didn't finish school. I just feel like a complete loser n I think about this a lot it's just my 10 year old nephew that I'm really close to that stops me when I think about it. Last time I wrote about this I was called a attention case n everything I honestly never felt like this b4 tho until I found out I was a diabetic

I have felt that sad recently. Remember You are loved for who you are with all the tragedy, mistakes and bad things that have happened that were not your fault. Be kind to yourself, for you have suffered enough. We have to learn to love ourselves, especially when you have little boys who think you are the best or a stray kitty in my case who thinks you are the Mom. I would never want your voice silenced. You mean something to me and allot of people here.. from all over the world…

I like your new picture! I found in that friend finder/the mingle machine you can select type 1 as an interest and pull up all the type 1's. What might vary the selection is whether they are a new comer or legendary members & out going vs not members but all type 1.

jayabee52 2012-04-07 14:48:09 -0500 Report

I believe the mingle machine has a little check box saying "age is near mine" and then another checkbox which says "Location is near (city & state name)"

pixsidust 2012-04-07 18:14:03 -0500 Report

yeppers it does, not so sure it works real well but gives a person a start

I know I tried the check box for near my city of Las Vegas NV and I got results from nearly the whole western part of the USA from Denver on the east through portland and san diego on the west. That is a lot of territory!

Every Easter, my Dad would take us to the local candy store where they hand-dipped chocolates. I would always select a solid white chocolate Easter Bunny and, of course, I would bite off the ears first. Those days and Dad are long gone but the memories a still sweet! Happy Easter!
(One snack I permit myself now is one square of good quality dark chocolate with a spoonful of all natural peanut butter on it…it's only about 7 grams of carb and YUMMY!)

roshy 2012-04-07 12:56:30 -0500 Report

yeah i thought you were closer to my home because we use the same numbers!!! i was on novo 30/70 at one stage!! it was nice only taking two injections instead of four!!! im on a pump now and i love it!!

melissa1987 2012-04-07 15:07:38 -0500 Report

I don't see the difference in the pump and the insulin pen unless u r working or going to school I understand but if ur doing nothing like me I think I'd rather be on the insulin pen

Type1Lou 2012-04-07 17:32:44 -0500 Report

Melissa, Up until last year I was using insulin pens for my Novolg and Lantus shots - 4 per day. I certainly liked the convenience of the pens over vials and syringes. Last August, I started on a Medtronic insulin pump because my control was slipping and I needed to tighten it up. I love my pump…only one injection for the infusion set every 3 days and you carry your insulin supply in the pump reservoir. It took me years to make the decision to pump but now that I have, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long! If the pens are working for you and you're getting good control there is no need to change. If and when you do, it will be because the time is right for you.

roshy 2012-04-07 19:36:26 -0500 Report

i was never a good shooter with insulin!!! i didnt mind taking the needle but id leave the house without it, or not have enough needle heads, (excuse excuse i know) but im a deadly pumper!!! Its not like i can leave my house without it and ive had T1D for 8 years and only this year i reached my best ever achieved a1c of 7.5!!! all thanks to my pump!! I suppose im just ment to be a pumper!!
but i understand people who like the needles, sure why fix something if its not broken????

Ah its nice talking to others who are in the same age bracket and have to deal with the same sxxt as you do!!! you seem pretty level headed yourself milissa, nice chattin to ya!!!
