As many of you know I had to have some more surgery on 2/6. I wanted to give you an update as I know many of you have be praying for me & are probably wondering if I fell off the face of the earth since I was only suppose to be in the hospital for 3-4 days with a recovery time of 4-6 weeks. Well, those of you who know my medical rollercoaster know that "Abbey" is my middle name. Short for abnormal.
I went in on 2/6 & had the surgery. Due to an infection I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks. I came home with a belly full of stitches & staples all the way from left to right & a set up to my naval. I was home for 2 weeks when part of the incision started to open. This is what we were being alert for as it happened back in 2009. The whole incision was also red & inflamed. Sure sign of infection. So on 3/4 back to the hospital I went. I was put on IV antibotics & the part of the incision that started to open had to be debrieded (sp?)(cleaned out) & reclosed. This time I was in for 3 1/2 weeks. I just got out on 3/28. Half the stitches & staples are out but 1/2 still remain. I'm also on an oral antibiotic for 3 months. Slowly but surely the rest of the stitches will come out. We're being very careful on how that is being done. On the left side of my incision my surgeon took out every other stitch & staple to ensure that that area would not start to spread open like the right side did. Then a week later he took out the rest of the left side. So far so good.
While in the hosptil my protein level was low again like in 2009. I had a hard time understanding why as I have been following a high protein diet since 2009. Well, I finally got my answer. The body uses it's protein in healing & in fighting off infection. So since my body was doing both it was using up any protein I was eating & then using my stored protein. While at home I'm still following a high protein diet. In the hospital I was given a protein rich health shake & a new protein rich jello 2x a day. At home if I feel that maybe I didn't get enough protein on a given day I have a protein shake w/my bedtime snack.
So that is where things stand at this time. I want to thank all the people who kept me in their prayers. I surely needed them. As I said, "Abbey" is my middle name as I can't seem to do these procedures normally.
