On Saturday March 24 my new girlfriend "SQ" was preparing some lunch for her friends in her apartment in Milwaukee WI.

While she was preparing the "barbeque" on the stovetop she caught her sweatshirt on fire. Long story short, she pulled her sweatshirt off and put it under water. Paramedics arrived and transported her to what I am told is the best burn center in the state of WI.

According to one of the nurses in the center, she will be there for 2 about weeks. I called her this afternoon and she got the news that she will need to have surgery (skin grafts?). No further information at the time of this original posting.

I will keep updated on her condition and update you here as I get more info.

SQ had been talking about coming on DC and reading what was going on here, and I thought that when she did I could direct her here to let her know that all y'all were praying and thinking about her.

It is tough at times like this doing a long distance relationship with 1800 + miles between us. Unfortunately i cannot just jet to her as I have some important appointments coming up. I suspect that by the time I am able to get to her, she'll be out of the hospital and recuperating at home.

Thank you all!

I am sorry to hear of your girlfriend's accident. I hope she is getting better. I know how it can be to have so many miles between you and a loved one, especially when they are hurt and needing us. My son was hurt last year and lives in Maine. I live in Florida. The trip is too expensive for me to manage and it is hard to know you can't get to them. I hope you can video chat with her frequently. She needs to see your face. It sure helps my son. Give her my best regards and tell her we are all praying for a speedy recovery.

I am sorry to hear about your friends accident. I will keep her in my prayers even tho I am reading this way after the fact. She will probably be recovering for some time.

Well the day SuzyQ and I have awaited has finally arrived more than 2 months after she burned herself. She has finally been released from the rehab facility and is now finally at home again. She will be having home health nurses and aides and PTs and OTs coming in from time to time, but she now is home.

Spoke with her just this evening after she arrived home and she is very tired and we didn't spend much time on the phone tonight.

But she wanted me to come as soon as possible. I have a Kidney Dr appt on 6/11 so sometime after that I will probably fly there and spend some time with her.

Thanks to everyone who had lifted her up in their thoughts and prayers.

God is good!

Oh very cool! I'm so glad she is finally home-she'll get better faster at home with her own things around her! And I'm glad you get to go see her again. Do good stuff for your kidneys so you get a good report there, and then, off you go! Thinking good thoughts for both of you :)

jayabee52 2012-05-27 09:20:31 -0500 Report

a further update: She will be going home on Tues with a Occupational Therapist to see how she will handle life on her own in her apartment. If things work well for her there she could be released from the rehab facility Friday after this coming Friday. So unless she has some sort of a setback, it seems she'll be able to come home soon.

Thanks to all who gave support and prayed for her during the 2 + months of her ordeal!

She is going to her church with a friend today for the first time since she had the accident, so she's excited about getting out of the center for a while.

Caroltoo 2012-05-27 12:46:01 -0500 Report

Sounds like she is progressing well. Wow, two months and still recovering from what seemed like a really freaky accident. Sure makes the point that life is full of the unexpected. Glad she is going to be able to get out of the center for a while. That is such a big step towards feeling more like normal. Sounds like your visit went well also. Hope the good news keeps on coming!

Update (of sorts) "SQ" viewed this discussion and posted this response on Gabby's profile wall: "missingbiunique" wrote on GabbyPA's profile.

"Hi Gabby and others who have prayed for that girlfriend in Milwaukee,
I am she and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your prayers. They truly kept my spirits up! While I thought I would be home by now, it will be better when the bandages on my burned arm and donor site on the hip are no longer part of my "wardrobe" and require daily dressing changes. I also hope to further strengthen my muscles. although attempts to do so in some ways have backfired. I have experienced serious shoulded pain from fully cooperating with occupational therapists who put me through a rigorous exercise regime. I should have backed off, but it's a case of live and learn.

My meeting with James was fantastic. Will tell you all about it soon, as my physical therapist is patiently awaiting putting me through the ringer!

PS: Suzy Q's cat is named "Bi-unique" and she misses him so hence the screen name.

UPDATE: I have just returned to Las Vegas from Milwaukee. The initial meeting with SQ went very well. Had some problems with lodging arrangements so we decided the best course of action would be for me to come back to LV.

SQ is out of the hospital and is now in a sub-acute rehab facility. She seems to be in good hands there, although there were a few glitches early on, which I believe have been corrected. We do plan to continue our relationship and are planning to get together next late in June or early July for my family reunion. (if she has made enough progress to get out of the rehab facility in time — says she's gonna work real hard to make it happen. She is a determined lady!) So things are looking good!

thanks wound lady! What do you know about the care of skin grafts and graft source sites?

Wound Lady
Wound Lady 2012-05-17 14:51:29 -0500 Report

There are all kinds of skin grafts, artifical grafts, human graft. Depends on where it is. I usually take care of the grafts for the surgeons. I place a KCI wound vac on after some grafts. It helps the graft take hold and stay. I will look up sites for you to go over.

jayabee52 2012-05-17 14:59:43 -0500 Report

SQ had a graft where she was the source of the graft. She had gotten an infection under a portion of the graft and they had to redo part of it.

Her 2nd graft source site has pretty well healed, but her initial source site still bleeds from time to time. I don't think there was a wound vac involved.

Wound Lady
Wound Lady 2012-05-22 09:27:46 -0500 Report

Where the graft site was havested it takes awhile to heal. Is SQ diabetic? If the new graft is healing well all that will need to be watched is the graft site. It bleeds because the surface was removed for the graft. It is making new skin and the area is dry and scaled. Right? Hope things go well for both of you. See you when you get back. Prayers and best wishes go with you.

jayabee52 2012-05-22 18:20:13 -0500 Report

I am back now after being there for something like 4 days.

Actually her source site is simply red. almost cherry red. She only has one site where the original graft was taken. where she bleeds now. She says that bleeding area is starting to grow smaller. Her 2nd graft site while newer is pretty well healed now. No bleeding. She reports itching and takes Benedryl to counteract the itching. They keep both her donor sites and her graft sites covered in gauze wraps and is covered with silvadine cream beneath.

Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts for us. I pray she will get out of the sub-acute rehab facility in time for us getting together in late June/early July for my family reunion. But I don't want her to come out until she is good and ready to go.

This trip has taught me a bit about myself and what I need to manage my diabetes. More on that later.

Not sure whether the new sub-acute facility will have wifi internet. Not sure if I will be able to be on DC much in the next weeks. We shall see! So if I seem to fall off the face of the world, that may be why.

jayabee52 2012-05-11 17:55:19 -0500 Report

UPDATE: Of the continuing saga. Last night she was really bummed out. She felt she needed emotional support because of mother's day. She had lost her mother to death about 3 years ago and she really misses her.

Her hubby at the time didn't give her the support she needed and that is what caused her to kick him to the curb. So SQ wondered if there was any way I could come out there. As is so happened I hadn't changed my flight so I didn't have to do anything more than get on the plane tomorrow at 6:45 AM local time. I'll be there at about 1:30P local time there.

So for better or worse. I will be going to Milwaukee WI.

jayabee52 2012-05-08 20:11:53 -0500 Report

UPDATE: It was looking like SQ was healing well and I was on the verge of flying out to visit her at her home.

However her medical team was not so optimistic and feels that more rehab is needed. She may be in a sub-acute rehab facility for about another month.

We were so looking forward to meeting in the real world finally and to say that we are both bummed would be an understatement.

I do want the best for this lady and I want her to recover fully so if it takes a little longer to meet her, so be it!

I now have to postpone my airline flight to reflect this new wrinkle. Life is interesting and take some interesting turns!

GabbyPA 2012-05-09 07:41:32 -0500 Report

Did her team tell her why they think it will take more time? Always good to have as specific info as possible.

jayabee52 2012-05-09 12:55:22 -0500 Report

Thanks gabby!

Just spoke with her this AM (and plan to talk to her tonight as well).

Her regraft is looking very good, however her "donor site" is healing slowly. Actually she says that the 2nd donor site is looking pretty good but she still has trouble with the 1st donor site which bleeds when they change the dressing (every day now). Plus she is very weak from all the time she's spent in bed so thay want to get her stmina built up before they turn her loose. But the hospital is getting pressure from the insurance co to move her to less costly sub-acute care. From what she can tell she thinks the transfer to the sub-acute facility will happen sometime on Friday.

I hate it that we are still separated but I am also wanting the best for this lady, so at her request I delay my arrival until sometime late in June. Just convincing ourselves that this is somehow for the best. (♪♫ that's my story and I'm sticking to it! ♫ ♪ )

GabbyPA 2012-05-10 21:08:12 -0500 Report

It will work out the way it is supposed to. Not always on our time frame, but hang in there.

jayabee52 2012-04-24 05:16:23 -0500 Report

UPDATE: yesterday, Monday 4/23, SQ underwent another grafting surgery to replace the skin which had been compromised by the infection. I spoke with her at about 6pm PDT and she made it through OK but noted that her voice was rather hoarse after the proceedure, so didn't want to talk long.

Now I pray she'll be able to keep this graft.

My cell phone has been acting up and I have been able to speak with her using a cell phone borrowed from a friend. I am waiting for a replacement phone today or tomorrow. (that means I won't be on DC during the delivery day as I don't want to miss the phone. (Ph # will be the same for those of you who have my cell #)

If you wish to contact SQ directly just ask and I will inbox you her number to her room phone. She thanks everyone on DC who has said a prayer on her behalf.

Thank you SA! Our first meeting in the physical world is yet to come. If you mean connected by phone, yes! Waiting for the phone to come is like being on pins and needles. I checked the site which they gave me to check and when I clicked on the tracking number it went to an error message. So no idea as to when it will be arriving.

jayabee52 2012-04-19 19:14:08 -0500 Report

UPDATE: (I now have my phone back in service so I can call her) SQ has just been to the surgeon's office again. The news he had was not good. She had seen the surgeon before and it was determined at that time that she had an infection on the graft, and she was started on antibiotics for that on Mon 4/16. now on Thurs 4/19 the Dr determined she would need to remove a portion of the graft and replace it with skin taken from her left hip (she had already had skin taken from her right hip.). Ever since she got to the rehab hospital she had been complaining about the care she received (or didn't receive) there. She had complained that her nurses didn't know how to adequately care for her graft.

Now this news that she is going to have to undergo a second graft is really frustrating. It would seem her ins. co was being penny wise and pound foolish when they insisted on using the rehab facility they did. The facility she is in at this moment, is in a national chain of rehab facilities, and I had checked them out quite some time ago when researching another issue, and the one here in LV had a particularly poor reputation (according to reviews). Perhaps it is a system wide problem. SQ thinks she will be able to stay in the rehab floor of the hospital since she's been through this ordeal in this current rehab facility. We shall see! I have been suggesting to her how to approach the ins. co. to allow her to stay in the hospital.

I ask for your continued prayers for her successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Thank you all!

jayabee52 2012-04-21 05:01:47 -0500 Report

Thanks Gabby. She's back in the hospital tonight. When I spoke with her tonight she said the nurses told her it might be up to 2 weeks to schedule another surgery for some reason. We'll see come monday. I am still here in LV as she is giving me mixed signals about coming. She wants me there, but then she doesn't want my first impression of her to be in a hospital gown. If you can't be with the person that you care about in time of need, then when else would matter? I know there is "embarrassment" or uncertain issues, but if people really care for each other, those things will melt away.

jayabee52 2012-04-21 18:59:30 -0500 Report

It is about first impressions. I have seen a lot of ladies in hospital gowns when I was a CNA so it is no problem for me, but I am also sensitive to her feelings. I don't think there'd be a problem for me. However I want to be a gentleman and consider her feelings.
