I know I read something about A1C tests, but I can't remember what it was. And I couldn't find it. So please forgive me if this is repeatative.

When and what was your last A1C number? And what are you doing to lower it or maintain it? I think this advice will be good to help anyone who is trying to lower their A1C.

Mine was in October. It was 5.6. I just had another one done today because I had a change in meds. I used to walk alot but stopped for awhile. After getting this good of a A1C I started walking again. Everyday. I'm hoping this will help maintain it. I know it's not much but for now it's a start.

I spent the afternoon on the site that Amy posted in http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/1486-invitation-to-test-rewards-prizes-program

I have earned a free A1C home test kit and much more. So at least now I don't have to purchase one. Woo hoo! Now I just have to make sure I can get it right when I do it for myself. It will be my first one ever. I am sure it will be horrible, but it is a start.

With the home tests do you have to mail your test somewhere? I thought I read that on the box. I just glanced at it. I think the home ones are a great idea. Especially if you don't have insurance. And if you can get one for free, that's even better. I'm gonna get one for myself.

Yes, you follow the directions and it does require a good amount of blood. You mail it off and they say you can have the results in as little as 5 days. So as soon as I get mine I am going to do it. I have enough points to pick up a few more, and I might do that. They are $50 a pop for the ones I could find. Ebay can have them for less, but I didn't see any lately.

I found then for 19.95 on flexsite.com. And they have them at walmart by the testing stuff. I can't recall then price but I don't think they were very exspensive cause I remember I was thinking of getting one cause they were so cheap. But free is better. You should definately get yourself some more. You'll have to let us know what your results, thi being your first one. I'm sure it will ok.

I am sure it is going to be some insane number like 12 or 15. But I hope it won't be staying there. My goal for now is just to get that number, then I can see what my next goal will be.

Hi Gals,
Had mine done in Sept and was very happy to see it stayed the same @ 6.7 Dr was happy but didn't make any changes, I was so hoping to go off the insulin. Well maybe next time. Lanore :-)

That is great! I have not had one done yet, but I am thinking of doing a home one, just to get a benchmark. I'm sure it would have been even more frightening to have had one done when I first was diagnosed.

It was very frightening my first one. But what was even more frightening with my last doctor had me on alot of Lantus for almost a year(200 units a day) and when I changed doctors my first one with him was 11.5. I have been with him now for about 1 1/2 years at it is a 7.0 and no insulin. the previous dr. was old and so set in his ways. Hard to talk to and brow beat you every time you saw him. I hate that. Now mine now is so good and easy to talk to. To me that makes all the difference. I do better with praise than brow beating. LOL

Don't we all!

I am going to go visit my doctor with all my notes, logs and results in hand. My mom has warned me that he won't consider anything that is not done by his lab, but he will just have to deal with it. I like him, but I have a feeling dealing with my diabetes may cause us to part ways.

My latest last week was 7.0. I came off of insulin and have lost 9 pounds without really changing the way I was eating. I am hoping next time to be alot lower so I can stay maintaining and losing weight without any insulin.

Thank you. It gives you motivation to eat healthier and watch the carbs. Also, I have had more energy and now do 2.5 miles on my recembent bike 2 times a day. I love to get positive support on here. It is also motivating.
