Nick1962 - just saw you accepted my friend request. I had gotten on your profile page to read some more of your postings. Thank you Thank you Thank you! I LOVE music & stumbling onto a new artist really makes my day: Just purchased a couple mp3's of Taimane - the youtube video you posted under the discussion: What song are you listening to right now.
Uber cool & I really dig it! Thinking of posting something similar to see what sorts of music, art, or things inspire the people diabetic connect. I learn so much helpful information while taking my new journey with T2 & I find it just as rewarding to get little nuggets like the new music too!

WOW, what a great mix, Zydeco (Buckwheat), Country (Dwight Yoakham) & Latin Rock 'n Roll (Los Lobos - "The Wolves") AND a vintage Ford truck like I grew up in!

Here is Los Lobos in a live 1988 performance, performing "La Bamba" (it's a dance - The name of the dance, which has no direct English translation, is presumably connected with the Spanish verb bambolear, meaning "to shake" or perhaps "to stomp".)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz2dajJsd1o

Here is a live 1958 performance with the real Ritchie Valens uploaded by Justin Bieber (so it says)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSKJQ18ZoIA

Here is an original 1958 recording session of La Bamba. (audio only) Ritchie's voice was recorded on another track so this track emphasizes the many attempts to get the instrumental track (part) just right. You can hear Ritchie's voice, along with other voices, in the background trying to perfect the recording.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-4MUcZcCFU
They finally got it right and it was a huge hit.

Ahhh, music is good medicine, a "healer."

If it weren’t for Richie Valens, so much good, ethnically driven music would have never made it into the mainstream. Not sure Los Lobos or my faves, the Gipsy Kings would even exist. Music sure does heal, builds bridges too!

For you "oldies" you can find a tribute to the Everly Brothers, especially to Phil who recently passed away. It's a lesson in music historty. Here's the link with many videos of their live performances:
http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/sayin...
"Bye Bye Love," "All I Have to do is Dream," "Wake Up Little Susie," "Cathy's Clown," "'Til I kissed You," "Bird Dog," "Lay Lady Lay," and others. The early videos are in black & white, but hey, we didn't have color TV back in the 50s. Be sure and click on their "Playlist" and you'll get many of their live performances. In the clip "On the Wings of a Nightingale" notice their restored 1957 Chevy convertible! In the clip "Why Worry" you'll also see Chet Atkins. You'll also see Dick Clark & Merv Griffin in some of the early clips.

This is my husband's favorite guitarist as well. He played "Always With Me, Always With You" at our wedding. He was wondering if you have heard of Steve Vai? They often play together. Here is his favorite one by him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IrWyZ0KZuk

Joe's "Always" has a special place in my heart as well.
I've been "aware" of Steve Vai as a virtuoso of sorts, but never really as much of a follower as I am of Satch.
That may change though because I often find myself re-discovering artists I previously didn't follow.

I just had my best friend's Dad die and spoke at his funeral and have been seriously considering what's after this life on Earth. Some of these are inspirational songs that speak to that truth that deals with eternity.

What's a "CD"? Is that anything like them "records" like my grandma used to talk about?

Gabby
GabbyPA 2013-10-30 18:07:38 -0500 Report

LOL yes...I could never imagine that I would be that vintage. I don't upload, down load or MP anything. I just listen to my CD's I am not into all the techno gadgetry. Actually the more "unplugged" I am the happier I am.

Nick1962
Nick1962 2013-10-30 18:40:13 -0500 Report

You're not that old yet - if you said your computer wouldn't play 8-tracks, now that's another story.
I have all my stuff digitized and about half of it in the cloud. The last CD I got was a signed one from a favorite artist. No technophile myself, but this is one technology I love.

Gabby
GabbyPA 2013-10-30 18:43:38 -0500 Report

See, I don't even know what the cloud is. I hear it all the time, just don't have a clue. I have several signed CD's, books and other things. We do still know what books are...with paper pages? LOL

Nick1962
Nick1962 2013-11-01 11:42:53 -0500 Report

The cloud is basically someone else’s computer – well millions of “someone else’s” where you store your stuff. I buy a song, but instead of downloading it, it stays on someone else’s computer. I just pay $.99 to access it whenever and wherever I want (I still download it though).
Books – yep, still definitely analogue on those.

Gabby
GabbyPA 2013-11-01 19:19:37 -0500 Report

Why would I want to be on someone else's computer or even worse, why would I want some one on mine? That just sounds like a crash waiting to happen. I think I will keep my head out of the cloud for now.

Nick1962
Nick1962 2013-11-02 16:17:38 -0500 Report

Lydickk below explains it pretty well – it’s technically a “decentralized web”. Kind of like the banking system, holding vast amounts of data instead of currency which you can take out or add to at any time via electronic transfer. Probably not going to happen in your lifetime, but I’ll bet your kid will be almost 100% cloud based by the time she’s our age. When our office moves next year we’re planning on being 80% cloud based – all our files will be stored virtually and we’ll access them via tablet or laptop – no need for huge hard drives or servers.
Oh and it did crash back in June of 2012, but because of the major amount of redundancy, there was no loss. Might not be something you ever use, but it would be some neat research just to keep up with the world of technology.

Lydickk
Lydickk 2013-11-02 10:01:23 -0500 Report

I'm kind of slow picking up and using the newer technology . . . but you might as well learn about the cloud . . . especially since different websites are beginning to force it's use. I tried to email a photo to my sister recently through my yahoo account . . . and yahoo.com refused to send the attachment through a regular attachment like it had in the past since it was "too large". Keep in mind that it wasn't too large just the week before. Seems they changed their rules and now you have to set your account up with their "dropbox". Then when you want to send the attachment it goes up to the cloud where they store all the photos you want to upload while they are being attached and sent via your email. After you send the email you can go into your "dropbox" where you stored the photo as a file and delete it. The cloud is just a slang name for storage they have set up for files you used to only be able to store on your computer. It gives you the capability to sign on to a computer anywhere and access files you normally would only be able to reach when on your computer. Some let you store files for free and others charge.
