When I look on the nutrition labels and I come to "sugar alcohols" what are they exactly? Am I that dumb? Or is there anyone else on this site who is as clueless as I am?

You are not dumb, you are paying attention to your labels. That is great. Many people don't realize what they are eating and then then wonder what is going on with their bodies.

Most chocolate sugar free candies have these. Many sugar free baked goods have them as well and they along with any other ingredient ending on "thole" are things to beware of. I know I made the mistake of not paying attention and ate little bite sized cookies that were sugar free. I was sick for a night..not fun.

Sugar alcohols are a class of sweeteners used to provide a sweet taste in candies, and baked goods. Many people get bloating and gas from these sweeteners.
I do if I have very little of them so I personally avoid them. There is a write up about them which tells it better than I can here ~ http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/...

I pray this is informative Lisa!

Great info James, thanks. Yes, I agree. I tend to stay away from these as they have rather undesirable effects on the digestive system for many. Some can eat them fine, but for me, I just eat a little of the real deal, and skip the franken food ingredients.
