whats the lowest your ac1 has ever been sense you were told you have diabetes?

the lowest mine has ever been is 5.1 and thats my current ac1.which was just checked in febuary.mine started at 8.2 when i was told then went to 5.6within 5 months and for 2 1/2yrs it was at 5.6.

My lowest A1C was 7.0. And that was only 4 years ago. Then it only went up from there. My daily carb intake is pretty much null & void. I only consume veggies. No fruit of any kind. So I don't know what my problem is.

You have to be getting carbs from somewhere. What are some of the veges that you eat???

Carrots, mostly. Along w/the typical salad fixins. Lettuce, tomatoes,cucumbers, radishes, bean sprouts that's the type of veggies that I consume. I stay away from veggies that I know that have carbs. Like , potatoes, corn, etc. Veggies that are known to be full of carbs. But I do wish that I had a list of carb laden veggies. Does anyone know where I can locate one?

Read Diabetic Solutions by Richard Bernstein. You can get a used copy on amazon.com. He has recipes and so much to teach. Carrots, and tomatoes are not listed on his foods to eat. Taking bs often, small amounts of insulin matched with small amounts of carbs helps. Like 6 carbs breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 for dinner.

Actually, Al, when the redid some of the glycemic index recently, carrots were reevaluated downwards. I have read this in the past and saw it on dLife again this weekend. They have a section on the glycemic index.

Yes Carol, I am aware. I did see that the same day I posted the links for Annalease. Maybe you could post that link as food for thought! Carrots have been a controversial vegetable as to where they belong on the Glycemic index for years. That is why I qualified my statements about their potential affect on diabetics. Potatoes were also lowered on the index, but I still cannot eat more than a tidbit without my bg spiking.

Next time I'm on dLife, I'll see if I can find that section again. I was thinking about posting it cause so many of us refer periodically to the glycemic index as a guideline.

I hadn't noticed that potatoes had been lowered. I find I can eat about 1/2 a red one without too much effect. Don't know if its the different type of potato or because I'm healthier, but I am occasionally enjoying a pan fried potato with onions and green peppers cooked in EVOO again. Yummy. One of those things I really missed. Haven't tried a baked potato in several years.

I'm sure the index would come in handy for many.
As far as potatoes, I can tolerate sweet potatoes and thats about it. I was able to eat a small baked potato when I was on Actos, but not since I stopprd the Actos. It's not worth risking bladder cancer for a potato, so white potatoe are out for now.

About 6 years ago, I got my A1c down to 5.9. It is currently 6.7 and I'm working on getting back into the low 6's. A year ago it was up into the 7's. Reducing the carbs and increasing the exercise has definitely helped; I try not to eat more than 120 carbs per day.

Some additional points that I thought appropriate to add to this discussion:

This almost sounds like a contest to see who can get the lowest a1c. There is no doubt that having an a1c within a healthy normal range is important. The question that comes to mind is what is that number or range (exactly)? There is some differences of opinion among the experts. Also, there are different labs that for different reasons, use a different range of numbers as guidelines.
Most of us know that it is possible to get your a1c improved by lowering your carb intake. Lower your carb intake to much, you could have a great a1c while possibly doing serious harm to your body and brain in the long run. I believe that unless you are an expert, or being guided by an expert in diet and nutrition, it is very difficult to get the best nutrition. The majority of doctors have little training in nutrition.
It has taken me almost 18 years of managing my diabetes, and many discussions with doctors, dieticians, diabetic educators to form this opinion. I am not attempting to be critical of anyone, but I hope to be helpful and infomative to some.

Dr. Richard Bernstein is a doctor who wrote Diabetic Solutions. He is a type 1 and has a 4.3 a1c. He is the oldest living diabetic in United States, I believe, and eats a 30carb diet …and has for more than40 years, …or something like that. Following his advise I now have a 5.4 a1c and few lows , as it is easier eating less carbs and taking less insulin as well.

I am familiar with the. controversial Bernstein diet. It has it's pros and cons. If it is helping you as apparently it is, then good for you. Obviously carb restriction will lower bg,and in turn a1c. I did a modified version of the controversial Atkins diet for many years with great success. I also ran into some minor health problems after about 16 years of being on it. I was an avid believer in the concept that Atkins professes, and I believe that Bernstein also has some healthful ideas. I defended the Atkins diet against many skeptics on this site a few years ago. I still feel that both Atkins and Bernstein have some amazing concepts but I have my reservations. There are those experts that feel that to much carb restriction long term, is unhealthy. It took me 16 years to agree! I corrected my health problems by modifying my diet once again. I finally followed the recommendations of my dietician ( even though I disagreed ) and they worked.
I am not for or against any particular diet. I don't believe that one shoe fits all. I am not a health expert, and therefore I cannot say what is best for any person with diabetes. I can share my experience however. Here is a link that you might find interesting

So new initial diagnosis 8.7 in August, in December I was at 6.6. Go this week for new result, have my fingers crossed!!!!!

I was diagnosed on July 22, 2011.
My A1C #s
July 2011 - 12.3
November 2011 - 7.6
February 2012 - 5.6

After the last test the Dr. classified me as
"Type 2 - Stable and Controlled"

My a1c was 10.8 in August of 2011. As of three weeks ago my a1c is 5.0. I am off inslin and am down to 1 metformin a day but he wants to revisit that in a couplf of months. He said he may take me off all meds at that time.

When first Dx I was 7.1. That was Oct 2010. Each test since then I have been bringing it down. My last A1c was Nov 2011 and it was 5.7. My daily average glucose for the past 90 days has been 109.4 which translates to about 5.4. Hopefully that will be confirmed at my next Dr.'s visit.

Congrats, can you give us the formulas as to how you figure this out? Would it be all your BGS divided by the # of times you checked?

I use "dLife" app and it has a function that records and track daily numbers. It can give a 1,3,7,14 ,30 and 90 day average of all entries. I also used another app from Pancreum.com that has an HbA1c Glucose Converter. Plug in the 90 or 30 day average from dLife into the coverter and it will spit out an A1c. It gives me a reference point and seems to be close to the actual number I get back from the labs. I also received a handout during a support group that gives a conversion chart for "Estimated Average Glucose" (eAG). The chart was from the ADA so it may be available thru them.

I don't know where mine started at, as I was taking big steps to get lower levels before ever seeing a doctor. But my lowest has been 6.4. Right now I am a 6.7...I am working to get it back down.

I am on meds now. I think when I went in for my first doctor visit I had it down to 7.5 or so..don't recall exactly. I can only guess what it was 9 months before when I first found out I was diabetic. But what is a disappointment is that it has not really gone down that much even with all the meds. That is what is frustrating to me.

Yes, that would be frustrating. I went on Dr. Mercola's site recently and started using his Nutritional Dashboard. Was surprised to see some of the carb counts on things I thought were lower. Maybe it's sneaky stuff like that holding you back. Why don't you check out the dashboard and see if it could be of any help to you.

The very first meal I entered had me going, "Oh, really???" as the carbs were much higher than I had thought.

I started a discussion this afternoon under the title of Nutritional-Typing. The Nutritional-Typing test is the lead in to his Nutritional Dashboard. Test types you as best metabolizing carbs/veggies or protein/fat or as an equal mix of those foods. I am very strongly a protein, so I do best on minimal carbs mostly from the lower glycemic index veggies.

Hi Michael, Thanks to Mr IRIsh I found a cool app for iPad it's free you plug in your average and it gives your your A1c, all I did was search Diabetes + A1c and it gave me several options. I don't have the option to download on a cell phone, but they also have those available. I am so excited to be able to monitor myself with this!

My doctor has it checked through the lab every three months. If I am concerned about changes in the interim period, I will check with an over the counter Bayer A1c test kit. My last one was 5.7 and was my lowest so far. My initial BGs were 400, so the initial A1c must have been 12+, but not knowing how important that reading would be, I didn't make a note of it.
