I, too, am a veteran of the Low/High BG roller coaster after treating a low. Eating a fast acting carb (not a candy bar or a cookie) immediately is the key…but it is so hard to stop eating and wait the 15 minutes to test again because we feel so awful when low. I use glucose tabs (3) or a glucose gel or liquid that comes in 15g containers. I really dislike the taste of these fast-acting carbs so I'm not tempted to have more than the 15 grams at a time.

When low, neil, he should consume 15 carb grams of a FAST acting carb, such as an OJ. A soda (about half can) will work in that way in a pinch. One can eat about 2 or 3 glucose tabs, or a tube of glucose gel (a small tube of frosting works too).

Wait 15 min after the fast acting glucose is consumed, then test. If the Blood Glucose (BG) is coming up, then eat a longer digesting food like peanut butter to keep one's BG from falling again. If one doesn't see one's BG coming up at the end of 15 min, do it again. This is called the "rule of 15s"

That will keep him from riding the BG roller coaster due to over compensating. It is better not to give in to our frantic, panicky attempts to correct a low.

yeah, we get so scared of the low that we overcompensate and go too high! prolly just the juice and wait 15 minutes to test again would have done it! then if it wasn't up above 70 do the cookie and wait 15 minutes and test again.
don't panic-pretty much the lows scare us all, and we want to get rid of the icky feeling so we do too much and pay for it later. it'll be okay.
he might want to talk to the doctor about his levels in the morning, though.
