Howdy Mr.fat! WELCOME to DiabeticConnect!

It is NOT just diabetes patients who take lantus, it can happen with most ANY Person With Diabetes (PWD).

I am not a Dr, nor do I play one on TV, but as I understand it, when you do most physical activities (like football) you are burning off your glucose. To keep you from going too low and collapsing into a coma (worst case scenario — death) your liver stores glycogen (stored glucose) and it dumps that load of glycogen/glucose into your blood stream. (inelegantly called a "liver dump") and you can continue to pursue your physical activity. You aren't even aware of it happening. It's automatic. The only time one notices is if one does a Blood Glucose (BG) reading after the dump, and finds it inexplicably higher than the previous reading.

If you were to play football for let's say 8 hrs, without eating your liver could be all dumped out, and you'd get a serious low, and perhaps fall into a coma and possibly even die.

In fact liver dumps happens with non- PWDs too, only their pancreas works and the excess BG is transported to the cells of the muscles and the brain and the excess is more easily burned off with them (plus they don't carry around BG meters and test their BGs frequently).

I pray this clears it up for you!

Blessings to you and yours

James Baker
